My husband and I have been visiting different Ethiopian/Eritrean restaurants around Los Angeles for about a year, we are big fans! Most of the restaurants décor, I would describe as rustic, but in our experience the more rustic(no frills) — the better the cuisine. We were actually headed to Ibex for the first time, but upon our arrival, we saw that it was closed, due to a recent accident. At the same time, the owner of Zula was delivering food to a company next door and he handed us a flyer for his restaurant just ½ block East of where we were standing. Walking through the front door of Zula Restaurant, the furnishings looked warmer than most Ethiopian restaurants we’ve been to, the dining chairs looked comfortable(and they were). Their Grand Opening is set for 01.16&01.17, so we must’ve been there during the soft opening. The menu had only a few choices, but it had everything we wanted — the vegetarian combo. The owner who was also our waiter was friendly and attentive with a big smile. My husband liked that there was a large screen TV showing the football game, I liked that the game was muted and we had lovely soft music(Ethiopian?) in the background. We enjoyed our meal, requested more of the red lentils and tomato/onion dish. When our bill came he explained that they were just getting their systems in place and he was unable to charge us for the extra lentils and tomato, so he gave them to us free of charge. After we paid our bill, he asked for my phone number and he text me our receipt — very cool! We will be back and soon!
