Deep in the Bowels of the Indianapolis Convention Center During Gen Con Indy is a dark place that few venture into and even fewer survive to tell their tale… What? I Unilocal I am not Mr. King, but I did get a reaction out of ya either way ;)… Read on, there’s some more cool stuff below. I have heard about True Dungeon for years but never bit the bullet. This year was just like any other, but a friend had an extra ticket and set up a group of us to make a run. For a professional description of what the hell I a talking about, proceed to the website above and click the«What Is It?» Tab or do a search on You Tube. Then welcome back for my take on things. This can be what you want it to be, just go in and have fun. If you are into dressing up and doing some role playing while looking the part go for it. I saw a dad take his two sons in and they were both dressed as Knights… seriously, that is freaking one of the coolest things I saw there that was not wearing a chainmail bikini. If you want to collect, the opportunity to do that is here as well. There are different tokens, some limited, some not. These will help you better beat the bad guys or solve the puzzles depending on your track. If you want to treat it like you game night and just run a session that would be an adventure with friends… then try it out. Either way it will be fun if you relax and enjoy the show. There is a small pouch full of tokens that are given to you at the start. Then you pick your character and start the journey into the unknown. There is a master sheet that one of your group holds that is given to the DM in each room. There is no need to memorize anything as it is all on the card… This is scary how well thought out it is… «The Good» — The staff are amazing. Again … amazing. I of course remembered my True Dungeon ticket, but forgot my convention badge so after a brink sprint back to the room to liberate it from the pile of laundry I was off to try and meet up with the gang before they made it too far in. Texts allowed me to keep up with their progress and I thought I was going to make it when I got the dreaded«We’re In» text from one of the guys. I was just around the corner, but«We’re In» can mean a lot of different things… I went through the door and went to the left, where I was instructed to go… but no familiar faces. The gentlemen behind the counter could tell by my facial expression that I had absolutely no clue where I was and asked me if I needed help and then escorted me to where I should have been… I could not express how much of a relief this was. From there… Game On! — Without giving away the secrets of the Dungeon… One of the rooms had a few(what I thought) were statues or mannequins… Man was I wrong when the one«came to life» and wielding a number of weapons in the room. Yes, I did change this up so I did not ruin the complete illusion. Aside from being a cutey… this girl was talented and an artist, able to remain completely still without laughing at a bunch of goofballs that lucked out and solved the problem way too fast. I could not even tell she was breathing… that kind of cool. — The rooms are well thought out and the folks involved are a lot of fun. From the deadpan delivery designed to make us laugh, to the comforting walk-through in the first room. Sometimes you can tell who was there a while and who needed a break, but even when tired they fed off the energy of the people in the group. — There is something for everyone here. Collectors get to collect rare tokens and spend an inordinate amount of cash. The 12 year old with his dad can spend five extra bucks for an armor token and beat a dragon… The older folks that refuse to grow up can have a blast making a run. — It is very well thought out. — Since it occupies a complete hall of the convention center, there is a food court stand inside. — They have guides that help direct you where to go when it is done and you can go to their own little gift shop and even trade in some of the tokens you had for potentially defeating the bad guys «The Meh» — They do your best to prepare you but my first run was a little frustrating. The group did not mesh and we were doing puzzles instead of a straight up fight every ting in front of you… The good part about that is that now I know what to do a little better next year. Maybe they should have a few mentor runs with rookies being taken through with some experienced gamers. Hmmmm T Mac has another genius idea. ;) «The Bad» — Nothing bad to comment on. Stop judging remember what it was like to use your imagination when you were a kid and enjoy yourself.
