Background:
In early summer 2013, I was going for treatment here. When Dr Prather’s treatment wasn’t working as he anticipated, he recommended that his NP inject lidocaine into my neck to alleviate pain. He told me that, by law, he cannot do injections. He said there would be 6 injections. 3 on each side of the neck.
Day of injection:
Injections 1 – 5 went well. The NP and I chatted while she was doing them. Injection 6 did not go well. Soon after the injection, I told the NP that something was wrong. As my throat began to feel strange, I realized I could hardly swallow. Breathing had become difficult. The right side of my body began to shake. She brought in oxygen and placed the mask over my face. She said she turned the machine to the highest oxygen saturation. It did nothing. The NP told me that there was «no epi-​pen and no crash cart.»
She asked me if I needed her to call 911. I nodded yes. I could see Dr Prather walk by my room a couple times, but NEVER ONCE did he come in to check on me.
Paramedics arrived and I was transported to the hospital. In the ambulance, there were no sirens at first. Then when the paramedics could no longer hear «wind movement» in my lungs, the sirens went on and we were flying.
What happened:
The hospital doctors stated that the drug was most likely shot into a nerve that shut down my ability to swallow, use my tongue and breathe deeply. It also caused the right-​side shaking.
Staying alive:
I knew that I was in deep trouble. I knew that if I panicked I would die. So, I started shallow breathing (nasal only), stayed calm in my head, and stopped talking.
Recommendation:
If you need an injection for pain management, go to a Board Certified MD or Pain Management Specialist.

Prather Wellness Center/​Meridian Health and Wellness is a great place to visit for your holistic health needs. I personally enjoy the massage therapy and chiropractic adjustments. I was struggling with hip pain as a collegiate athlete. From a couple of adjustments and a massage I felt quick and sustainable results. However, this is just a few of the services they offer. I also think they usually offer free consultations so I’d recommend it as your first stop.

Visited Prather for my first experience with acupuncture. I had a groupon which made it an extremely reasonable price. The acupuncture was surprisingly easy and did release the tension in shoulders from sitting at a desk. The front office staff were extremely friendly but I felt the front exam spaces were cold and too well lit to actually relax.
I can now mark it off my list of things I’ve tried but it didn’t inspire me to incorporate as part of my wellness routine.
