Wish I could rewind the day and never set foot in that place. I was in Indy for business with my husband and we wanted Cajun food. We found Papa Roux Toux and all the reviews on Unilocal raved about this place. Not sure why. No idea at all. We walked in and had no idea what the procedure was. The staff saw us come in and no one spoke up. We had to come to them. The counter girl was rude when I had a question about the menu board. We ordered two po’ boys. I had the catfish and my husband had the roast beef. Our food looked nothing like the pictures. The catfish was mushy with an over fried crust. His looked as if it was just thrown together. Our side were less than impressive taste wise. Our sweet tea was bland and watered down. I wish we never ate there. Mediocre food at best.

If I could give no stars I would… This is the worse«Cajun» food I have ever eaten in my life. I describe it as a basterdized version of CAjun food… First how could a roast beef po’boy not have gravy? second étouffée is nver blond… it is always brown. the roux should be COOKED! its funny that I talk about ROUX this shop sells shirts talking about ROUX however their ROUX is RAW. They do not cook it down. And the red beans and rice… Please. cook the red beans and dont just chop the uncooked beeans. I had whole hard beans in the red beans. I wanted my friend that I was visiting to taste good red beans so we went to the store and I made her a pot. It deosnt take much oh and WORLD cajun does not mean HOT! every thing was overly spiced HOT! disgusting. The bread pudding was so slimy I could not put it in my mouth becuase I though that just by watchint it shimmer I would throw up. I really was scared that the little food I just ate would come up just by the thought of raising the fork to my mouth with this«Bread pudding» on the fork. Lastly…I had to order something… I ordered the cat fish«Po’ Boy» Could I get it dressed? No. No lettuce tomato or pickles… pelase that is what should be offered on any sandwich. The only thing that they offer… Cole slaw… No thank you. The fish… WASENCASED in some type of seasoning. I say encased because I had to take it off in order to enjoy the catfish. Yes, they runined a perfectly good piece of fish. ughhh

The Catfish Po’Boy at Papa Roux Toux is easily in my ‘Top 3: Best Things I Have Ever Had’ list. This sandwich is mind-blowing, and even though my stomach barely accommodates one at a time: I always find myself debating going back for a gluttonous second. The bread is perfect. The Voodoo mayo is perfect. The catfish is perfect. Need I say more? My only disappointment is that the Market menu no longer offers side dishes, nor do they offer the glass bottle orange-pineapple soda. However, these qualms are totally ancillary and do not effect my love for the aforementioned sandwich. Words don’t describe how highly I recommend this place, or how badly I want a Catfish Po’Boy at this very moment. Do yourself a favor and try Papa Roux!

The Po’Boys that they serve up are huge and delicious. Of all the places in the City Market(where Papa Roux is located), this takes the cake when it comes to price/portion ratio. I certainly miss the good ‘o days when they had sides though. I recommend the BBQ Chicken Cheddar Po’Boy. I’ve had other ones, but none of them seemed to top that one. I still prefer the West side location with its unlimited tea and sides.

Quick note if you haven’t been in a while. There are SIDES are no longer available at this location. –insert extremely sad face here– Sammiches are a stitch cheaper and you have two options as accompaniments — Chips and Triton root beer.

Unilocal, sometimes a place deserves a «6 out of 5». Papa Roux Toux serves up your favorite Cajun joy from the original east-side location, only awesomely located in City Market. I can’t express enough how awesome the Voodoo mayo is. It’s definitely in the«top 5» sauces ever. Yes, ever! Po’Boys come with a side and a drink — but unfortunately, they don’t do the Coke/Pepsi thing. It’s usually something cool and bottled though, Root Beer or a flavored soda. And, there’s the Tap Room upstairs where you can grab a beer — since you’ll have to eat upstairs anyhow if you’re dining in, there being no room downstairs to sit and eat. Want more value? Saturdays before noon, you can get 2 Po’Boys for $ 10(with sides and drinks) before noon.

Solid Cajun /creole eatery that I’d heard plenty of Indianapolis friends rave about the last few years. This location in the city market gets an extra ½ star for their late afternoon hours when seemingly every other spot in City Market is closed for business. It’s also a bonus to enjoy one of these sandwiches accompanied by the craft beer seekers upstairs at Tomlinson Tap. Recent visit: catfish po’boy(3.5 stars), mushroom étouffée(5 stars), pineapple orange soda(4 stars). I abhor coleslaw and yet I was OK with it on my po’boy — but way too much here made this very messy to eat. I still didn’t care that I killed a tree’s worth of napkins. Highly satisfying. Service: on point, and if they don’t text you when your order is ready & you don’t hear your name… they may break out the bullhorn. Mushroom étouffée… oh please let me have more of this. I’d have eaten only that if I hadn’t been so hungry. Pineapple-orange soda was a solid final complement to this excursion. Next time: I will try either the pulled pork or roast chicken. And corn bread. And red beans… spicy garlic stew. I will be back.

Ooh momma… this place makes some big, messy, YUMMY po’ boy sandwiches! You know, places like Papa Roux make it really hard for me to go back to a vegetarian lifestyle. Especially when they serve up super tasty meat’wiches. And even though I think about lunchin’ at Papa Roux everyday, I will be strong… and I will only make a visit every other week. xD Of course Dillon loves the mushroom étouffée side. but I can’t get enough of the tomato creole. I’m a kimchi eater and this side was very spicy, almost too spicy(Hey! I don’t eat Korean everyday anymore!) for me. The po’ boys are really big, but leftovers are still just as tasty! Shout out to the little cashier girl that seemed nervous explaining the menu to us newbies. You did a excellent job with your sales pitch. :)

Was in Indy for a conference and wanted to try something different than what restaurants packed the convention center area. My map lead me to City Market but from the outside I had no clue what lay inside. This place is located among several other local shops inside of City market. I had the Sausage Po Boy with a spicy tomato creole soup side. The Tomato creole was spicy and amazing. Made me glad I didn’t go for something spicier! The Po Boy was great as well. Bread was fresh and the sausage was delicious with the sort of slaw combination they added. The cream soda to top it off was just the icing on the cake. What a delicious combination. I would recommend them to those who want what may be the closest thing to N.O. Cajun that Indianapolis has to offer. Make sure to grab plenty of napkins… you’re gonna need em!

Thank god for days when I work from my home office. Love being able to walk over to City Market and grab a sammich for lunch. Sometimes I eat it there, sometimes I bring it back with me and do a working lunch thing from my desk. When I go to Papa Roux Toux, I *always* bring it back with me because their sammiches are too damn messy to eat in public without a bib, 6 napkins, and a knife and fork. And I mean all of that in a very good way. No skimpy portions, the Po-Boys are HUGE, coated in Voodoux mayo and pretty much as tasty a sammich you are going to find around Indy. I love the slaw on the sammich, usually order slaw as my side and add the side on top of my sammich… perfect. These maybe aren’t a true Po-Boy to a purist(I was just in Mobile, AL and had a couple of «authentic» Po-Boys) but they are every bit as good, if not better. I have only tried the chicken and the pork, but I keep going back for them. You definitely should check this place out if you haven’t already.

Had a sausage po boy while at Tomlinson’s. I don’t understand how you can actually have visited the Gulf Coast and have gotten a po boy there and still create this sort of abomination. Bread: wrong. Size: wrong. Toppings: wrong(coleslaw is not an acceptable substitute for lettuce and mayo). Price: too damn high. Sausage: not bad, but it’s that generic andouille clone stuff that you get everywhere(although I’d be shocked to find anything else in Indiana). Couldn’t eat it while I was there, so I took it home and ended up pulling off the sausage to salvage it. I mean, what is wrong with people? It’s stuff like this that makes me so hesitant to try places that call themselves«cajun.» So, if a really great one did open up, I may miss it because I get burned by stuff like this so often. That aside, if you take the po boy connotation off of it and just eat a sandwich, then I guess it wouldn’t be that bad. But, if you’re a native Louisianan like me, then this is just not going to suffice.

As I sipped a cold one at Tomlinson’s during the hustle bustle crowd attending the Beer Fest, I saw Papa Roux scurrying by and inquired how the zip line ordering worked. What a genius idea, by the way, but then this guy is full of genius and has taken this city by storm with such. As I ask what he recommends, he suggests the Catfish PoBoy, zips the order down the line & takes my cell no. to notify me when it was ready. Let me first say that after all this time, I hate to admit that this was my first taste of the Roux goodness, but the fact that I he’s not made his way North is the best excuse I can come up with. Before long my cell was buzzing. It only took one bite of this giant sandwich for me to see what the hoopla was all about. Voodoo mayo?! Hells yeah! Gimme some of that! Coleslaw on top? What?! Om nom nom is all I’ve got to say. I did stop to take a breath and shared a bite with my daughter — not a fan of catfish, mayo or coleslaw — but I had to ask for it back after she continued with another bite. Messy? Yes. Did I care? No. Although it would have been nice if I got a napkin. Easy to forgive considering the crowd had them slammed, and for good reason. I grabbed some paper towels from the bar and had another half a sandwich to enjoy later. Oh Roux, your Voodoo has me hooked! I’m looking forward to trying more of their other menu items and great sides. I hear he’s got some great deals including a free drink. You bet I’ll be doing my research.

WOW. This place was incredible. Came here during my lunch break at the Convention Center and though it was a bit of a walk, it was 100% worth it.(Plus, you’ll probably want to walk off the 1000 calories that are in the sandwiches). I had the pulled pork po’ boy and it was fantastic. French bread, gooey delicious meat, and a cajun mayo that I cannot put into words. The sandwich also included tangy cole slaw that added some kick to it all. Plus! They give you a free Abita root beer with every sandwich. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in Indy.

I just wanted to update my past review to say I still LOVE papa roux. I was back in Indy for 24 hours and you know where I made sure to go? Here! So I go on a Tuesday(OMG it’s jambalaya day, I’m the luckiest person ever) and got tons of food. I went way overboard. My bf back in Cleveland had never had it. So i got a catfish and a pork po boy and two orders of jambalaya with all the sides all that came with. The staff was super friendly with all my special needs of needing to keep the innards separate for the 5 hr trek back to cleveland. It was so appreciated that night and the next. Amazing!

Great food at a great location! Had the garlic stew and added sausage. $ 9.50 for the entrée w/sausage, a side and an Abita root beer. The stew was sweet, spicy, and garlicky… mmm…mmm…GOOD.

Love it. For $ 9.50 you can get an entrée with meat, one side, bread, an Abita rootbeer. I tried the mushroom etoufee with smoked chicken and a side of beans and rice. The etoufee was out of this world — cheesy with HUGE perfectly cooked meaty mushrooms. The chicken was shredded and boy did they give me a lot. The rice was the tiniest bit undercooked, but the rice-etoufee ratio totally made up for it(probably 2⁄5 rice, 3⁄5 etoufee). While seasoned perfectly, the etoufee has NO heat, so ask for a side or two of Louisiana hot sauce. The bread was disappointing, only two little sliveres of unbuttered, untoasted French bread. Hoping this changes to nice garlic bread as they get settled in. I did not care for the beans and rice. Something in the seasoning didn’t do it for me. However, hubby wolfed them down, so they couldn’t be too bad. The rootbeer was absolutely delicious, but again, once they are more settled in, hope they will offer a diet version. The four stars comes from the value of the meal and the total deliciousness of the etoufee.

Oh my goodness YES! So I couldn’t decide on the onion or the chicken PoBoy. They let me do ½ and ½ at no extra cost. I loved them both. Fantastic taste, comes with two small sides, AND an amazing root beer. The people are very nice and helpful with ordering. This will become a regular place for me. It is in the City Market which has its own personal charm :) I could spend all day at the market people watching and enjoy local food! Support Local! Buy Local!

I live by many rules. There is one rule that rules the roost when it comes to food(and drink): put an egg on it. Everything. Pizza. Burgers. Dogs. Salads. Gin drinks. And Roux Po-Boys. Everything. So if I say you should show up at 1140 to beat the lunch rush… that means you might show up at 1130. Thus, I’m making it an effort to be there at 1115 — wink, wink. And, I think I’ll skip breakfast on the days I’ll be here. What, skip breakfast? Yeah. Breakfast. Skipped. Entirely. Why? There’s too rad of a brrrrrrrrrruuuuuuuuuunch hybrid sandwich option here. I knew Papa had his po-boys and they have been fantastic. What I didn’t know… he had a breakfast sausage styled po-boy — his mighty giant bread, slaw and roux sauce with smoked sausage and an egg. With each po boy comes two free sides(or a bag of Zapp’s chips) and a free Abita root beer. Yeah. Really. $ 7.50: sandwich(that’s possibly made for two) + sides + drink(all more awesome than your chain sandwich options). This stand in the City Market might change the entire lunch marketplace of Indianapolis. I’m not kidding. Think about it. 1.2 million people live in Indy. Half of them are men. Just about half of those men work downtown(we’re at 300,000 now) and most of those men eat sandwiches at lunch. For years — decades? — downtown diners have been dependent on chain spots for sandwich lunches. From Subway to Quiznos to Jimmy John’s to Potbelly, they proliferate like drunk honey badgers around here. Why? Because they know they have a dedicated market. Now once word gets thoroughly around about Papa Roux Toux, a local business owner will dominate the downtown sandwich market. And hey… consider the awesome women that could also enjoy this awesome place and you have yourselves an upheaval of the norm — and this is exactly the kind of movement I’m behind. Not in need of a handheld trophy of delights? Their red beans & rice is served in a white take out container and is overwhelmingly good. I thought it would be soupy and small like a side. No. it’s a meal. With smoked sausage. Note: they’ll be open late night, matching Tomlinson Tap Room’s hours(read: other than a few high end cocktaileries I know of in town, this is the best bar food here). There’s something interesting about Papa Roux that a lot of businesses should think about: I know the owner. I know Papa. I like him. I know him as a friend. I watched him build this stand from scratch. I care about it. That care + that carebear belly I have after eating at Papa Roux + smiles from my wallet = what you should take into consideration when choosing your sandwich stop.
