Having had dinner at La Parada and a bit of time on our hands, we popped into this strip mall bakery with no expectations, aside for some adventure. What we found was a big room with a couple display cases and a huge cooling rack of Mexican pastries. Lots of strange, unidentifiable sweets ripe for the picking, most around 60 or 70 cents a pop. I ended up with pineapple and strawberry cheesecake turnovers, a slice of jelly roll, a jam filled sugar encrusted muffin/scone, and a couple torta rolls. I also picked up a pack of 5 bolillo rolls for probably a dollar. Nothing was really priced, but the big bag of stuff I checked out with came in around $ 5. After having checked out, I noticed a sign advertising fresh tamales, and the grandma with the ice chest cooler was more than happy to dole out three varieties(red chicken, green chicken, and jalapeño cheese) for a buck each. I’d have preferred them in corn husks for freezing, but I will NOT complain about abuelita’s tamales. Cool little spot that’s well worth the trip across the parking lot from La Parada.
