I have a ferocious appetite for Tres Leches Cake. I’m not a big dessert fan, but Tres Leches will have me sneaking in the fridge for one more bowl(yeah, I said bowl) of the luscious stuff until I’m sick or it’s gone. I didn’t always have this issue, but one day I stopped into Merry’s to get a drink and walked out with a custom order for a quarter sheet cake to surprise my family with. I picked it up, we ate it up, and a tradition was born. Don’t be shocked to come to my wedding and see a cake from Merry’s front and centre. I love many other things they make and offer– tamales!- but consider how’ll cool you’ll be if you order a cake from here on your next special occasion. Just save me a piece!

(Pretty much the same as the other Merry’s Bakery I went to on Michigan Road, so I’m going to copy/paste.) Typical Mexican bakery with the standard sweet breads, «pan dulce». They also have some non-sweet«regular» breads, the«bolillos.» Bolillos are not shaped like a regular loaf of american bread, but they are bigger than a roll. Kind of a cross between a baguette and a loaf, almost the same size and shape as a sub-sandwhich bun. There’s another«pan de sal»(«regular» bread) of the same formulation/recipe, but shaped differently, but I forget the name. If you’re looking for sandwich buns kinds of bread, these«bolillos» and the other type are actually cheaper per pound than simiar stuff sold in regular grocery stores. If you haven’t had the sweet Mexican bread products, those are unique too. A few types are pastry-like, but most of them are in between a danish and a regular dinner roll in terms of the amount of sugar. Not really sweet enough for what a North American person might consider a dessert, but too sweet to be a dinner roll. Consider it something to go along with a between-meal coffee or tea, or continental-style breakfast, or refreshments served at a gathering. They are not light pastries. Most are actually kind of dense, and big enough to equate to 2 or 3 servings. They also sell international phone cards. The other«Merry’s Bakery /Panaderia» stores around town are pretty much identical. And other Mexican bakeries sell pretty much the same style items. It’s serve-yourself. Pick up a tray and a set of tongs. Use the tongs to get the breads out of the cases and put them on the tray. Take the tray to the cashier, who will bag it and ring it up.
