I felt I needed to update my review again now that my husband, my other daughter, and myself have joined classes at Long’s Shotokan. We currently have 4⁄5 of our family enrolled(#5 is too young haha). My oldest daughter is active in karate, team kata, aikido, judo, and weapons class. I am continually impressed with her progression in each of these areas of karate and am equally impressed with the many instructors at the dojo. Sensei Mark Long is owner and namesake of the dojo. He teaches the beginning, advanced, and team karate classes. I appreciate his professionalism and no-bull sensibilities when it comes to teaching. My youngest daughter is in the Little Dragons class for 3 – 6 year olds. Sensei Jackie teaches this class, with higher-belt helpers(brown belts and shodans). Jackie makes the class really fun for the kids in a way that doesn’t feel forced. The kids practice their kicks and punches through plastic rings and practice jumping over mats while kicking. My daughter loves it. She asks if she can go to karate on days that there isn’t Little Dragons class. Sensei Jackie also teaches the weapons class which primarily covers the bow/staff and bow kata. My husband, my oldest daughter, and myself all take aikido classes from Sensei Miguel. I feel like sensei Miguel is the most soft-spoken of the instructors at Long’s Shotokan, but don’t let that mistake you of his skills. He seems to have a keen eye for natural talent and extensive knowledge in all things aikido. I am really impressed with his teachings and skills. My husband and daughter also take judo classes from Sensei David. My husband is only a few classes in(and really sore) but seems to be enjoying it. In the realm of self defense, I think that judo is the most important martial art to master since most fights/attacks end up on the ground. Sensei David recently had knee surgery And was back teaching just days afterward. I think that stands as a testament to his love of teaching judo. Mark’s wife, Mary, runs most of the office work. She is one of the nicest ladies I have ever had the privilege of knowing. She is always kind, smiling, and helpful. I thoroughly enjoy our time spent at the dojo. And as I stated in my ya previous review, I see our family remaining loyal to this dojo for years to come.
