In the world of todays meat markets and butcher shops, I’m not sure how this place is still open. They dont have the price of Walmart, the selection of Hyvee, and definitely not the over the top uniqueness of Local Pig or McGonigals. They have a big empty store with a couple of meat counters. They are friendly and will steer you towards buying bundles of assorted meats. With all the open empty space they need to creat a reason to get people in the door, because the meats can be had elsewhere. Just because its in Harrys town, doesn’t mean its still 1952. Maybe nightly square dances ???

We have been getting our steaks at Curts now for a few years, mostly special occasions and holidays. The cost is more than what we used to spend at Sams or Costco, but the quality and taste of the meat is so much better that it is really worth the price. We have two teenagers, and when they get to choose a special meal each of them always chooses rib eye steaks from Curts. The property is nothing to write home about, it reminds me of a old neighborhood grocery store in southern Indiana many years ago(only without the groceries). Service is always very friendly. Their steaks have always been top rate. We tried the pork chops a couple of times and decided that they were not too much different than we can get elsewhere cheaper. Next visit we plan on trying their deli meats and maybe a store made sandwich. Local establishment that deserves local patronage.

Picked up some smoked pork chops and bacon. Cooked them up and whipped up a couple of twice baked potatoes using the bacon. Pork chops were flavorful and tender. Bacon had a real bacon taste instead of the vacuum packed artificially cured stuff sold in grocery stores. Local blue collar neighborhood store with good product. Will go back to try more.

In a word… gross. Not exactly a clean place. Didn’t have any fresh lamb, had some way overpriced frozen stuff you can get anywhere. The other meats didn’t look appetizing at all. The rest of the store, 90% of it, looks like a consignment shop… weird.

I didn’t go here to buy meat. I just went for lunch. And if you look at what Western Independence has to offer, it’s probably one of the few joints that serves food that won’t clog your arteries or lead to an early death. They offered a lunch special for a sandwich, chips, drink, and brownie for a little over $ 8. They didn’t have any chips in stock(somebody dropped the ball on inventory?) and instead offered me a side of pasta salad, which really turned out to be a better option. The homemade brownie was awesome — so gooey. The turkey was your typical non-organic, partial-filler sliced meat. But the sandwich was big. Filled me up. It looks like the inside of an estate sale. None of the tables and chairs match. I thought it added to the charm and reminded me of why I love the Midwest. But unless I’m in the neighborhood, I really wouldn’t drive out of the way for lunch here.

Used a Groupon at Curt’s a little over a month ago. The store is nothing to write home about. Plain, dingy, few shelves, and old. The meat counter is located in back and the staff was friendly. I had not been to a local butcher shop in several years. After reviewing their prices on the meat, I was reminded why. The meat is almost double what you would pay anywhere else. I usually purchase my steak, pork loin, pork shoulder, and stew meat at Sam’s Club. The prices at Curt’s were a shock to say the least. I can appreciate that they are a «butcher shop» and locally owned/operated. I just choose not to spend my grocery budget at a place that charges what they do for meat. Several different kinds of steak were $ 10 to $ 13 a pound. They did not have the option of a smaller size pork butt/sholder. I finally decided on their thick cut bacon. I ordered 4lbs and that used up all of my $ 20 Groupon. I believe that the bacon was on special the day that I went in. It was a Saturday and they were selling it for $ 5.49 a pound. Not sure what else to say. I fried up the bacon and it was bacon. Tasted like every other bacon that I have ever had. It had the same amount of grease, and yielded the same amount of servings. In my opionin it was no better or worse than the brand name bacon you can buy at any store. I understand that it is «fresh meat and good cuts». This store just isn’t for me. I will stick to Sam’s Club for my various meat needs.

There are not many butchers in KC that are not a major grocery store any more. I got a «groupon» for Curts and picked up one of their«packages» of meat. Some chicken, roast, sausage, etc. Great bargain with the coupon and so far and very pleased with the quality. If you can get past the way the store looks when you walk in you will arrive at the counter for great service and great meat. Dont go hoping for bargain prices because you pay for the fresh meat with good cuts. Close enough to home to be a frequent visitor for those special occasions.
