What in the world did we get ourselves into? Stop at Granny’s and thought it would be a treat from old standby Cracker Barrel. This place was terrible with service and food. We literally waited an hour and fifteen minutes for our food. I’m not just complaining about our wait but there were people that had been there before us and were agitated as well. Just how long do you think a mother can keep her disabled child calm after waiting on food for more then an hour? Not long I assure you. I think you did those people and everyone else that had been waiting more than thirty minutes a disservice. No one ever came out to say we are sorry for the wait but we are backed up. I think we all would have been a little more sympathetic. However, from reading the reviews this is the norm. On to the food! I asked for my eggs to be scrambled soft not runny. I got hard rock lukewarm scrambled eggs! My hash browns were blah and the bacon was fine(you can’t mess that up). However my friends were very disappointed with the pancakes that taste like corn bread and fried eggs which was supposed to be fried hard and you guessed it, it was just the opposite. We order wheat toast so why would you bring wheat bread untoasted for one of the order? Oh by the way you took the bread to be toasted and I never saw it again. I think the best thing we had there was the water and the nice waitress. If I ever get the unction to stop here again please shoot me first! If you are serious about your business Granny, I pray that you stop to read the Unilocal reviews and make some adjustments. If you don’t care about what people say about your business keep cooking bad food and lacking in time management and the sign on your door will soon say closed permanently!

My boyfriend and I stopped here for lunch on the second day of our drive from Texas and it was maybe our best choice our entire trip. The food was savory, filling, and abundant, and the overall atmosphere was exactly what I was hoping for. Friendly staff, quick service, and a homey diner atmosphere(along with a sanitation score of 99!!!) made for the perfect pit stop for two weary travellers.

Good place to stop as we drove from Asheville to Charlotte. We ordered Country Fried Steak and shared it. Plenty. We were not keen on the collard greens. We also ordered rhubard strawberry pie. Pretty good.

I had passed by this place on I-40 for years on my way to the mountains and wondered about it. Stopped there this past Sunday for lunch and wished I’d kept going or gone across the street to McDonalds. Unbelievably slow service, salty and runny pork bbq, undercooked frozen fries, overly sweet cole slaw. the only decent part was the hushpuppies. Calling people«, honey» does not make up for bad food and awful service.

Nice, homey place to stop for lunch. We both had grilled cheese & veg beef soup.

I’m a 27 year old guy and I can cook a better country meal than this place. Almost everything we had tasted bad and was cold. If I was to take a guess, I would say the Mac n cheese was from a box(ie: Kraft). The mashed potatoes seemed to be instant potatoes from a box. Both of these were cold. The only thing that was warm and worth eating was the fried chicken fillet. Even though they got the order wrong and smothered it in gravy, it was the only thing I finished. The waiter was good and friendly, but the food took way to long to prepare. Granny checked us out when we were paying for the tab, she wasn’t friendly at all. And BTW, we stopped in at 12:55pm, so I don’t necessarily agree with the 5 star review here that it’s about timing. Do yourself a favor and just go to McDonald’s or burger kind if you stop at this exit.

After eating here, I thought maybe Granny had passed on, and maybe the kids inherited the place and didn’t know how to cook. When I checked out, I saw Granny, so I’m just not sure how the cooking could be so bad. I thought all southern grannies were good cooks, like it was mandated. Anyway I had a burger. Hard to screw it up but if you make the smallest burger you can, extract all moisture then place it on a cold, stale bun — turns out you can. Side of corn was poured from a can. They didn’t heat the corn. So if you’re a fan of room temperature corn without any flavor at all, load up with a double order here. I like to say nice things when I can. So, our server was really nice. Not speedy. But nice. Anyway I’m sure the locals like it because there is no where else to eat, but if you’re on 40 looking for food, keep on rolling.

I’ve read the other reviews and the only difference I can see is maybe the time of day people are visiting, my son and I stopped in on a Sunday at 12:00, the place was busy and the food was hot and very good, my son got breakfast and I got lunch so we sampled a lot of the menu. The biscuit was huge and fluffy, his bacon was crispy the eggs and hash browns were a large portion. I had open faced country style steak, very tender, you could tell the mashed potatoes were homemade the pintoes were very good. Mac and cheese was only thing that could have been better. Wednesday special: chicken & dumplings with 2 sides is $ 5.99! Just can’t beat the price and it’s country cooking. Nothing fancy — but beats the high cost of Cracker Barrel!

Pulled into Granny’s Country Kitchen on a road trip after seeing their billboard on I-40. Easily recognized this as a «Homestyle» restaurant and was happy to have an option for lunch that didn’t involve a drive-thru. The menu had quite a selection but eventually we settled on Hamburger Steak, mashed potatoes, green beans and Ribeye, collards, and mashed potatoes. The food was actually hot which was a nice change from most places today. Hamburger steak was average, OK flavor but not memorable, the mushroom gravy helped. The mashed potatoes were, well mashed potatoes, and again a little mushroom gravy helped them along. Both the green beans and collards had good flavor, but had been over salted. Had they laid off the salt a but, they both would have been rated as very good. The ribeye, well what do you expect when you can get a steak for less than $ 10? It was definitely a cheaper cut of meat, coupled with being cooked on a flat top grill which gave it that rubbery, «wet» texture didn’t help. OK, a bad choice in any restaurant that isn’t a steak house unless you are looking for a late night«Steak and Eggs» kind of thing to help with the impending hangover you will incur the next day. The corn bread at Granny’s didn’t have a hint of sweetness(which I prefer) but failed as the savory variety because it had a rubbery, reheated since it was cooked earlier(this morning, maybe yesterday?) and sat in a bread drawer feel and again, was too salty. If I was hungry enough while passing by I might pull in and give it another shot. Maybe the over-salted taste was to accommodate the abused truck driver palette who undoubtedly is their main clientele but it was a bit much for me, and I am not a «health nut» by any stretch of the imagination. Better than a cold Whopper and dried out fries, but not worth going out of your way. Standard«Country Kitchen» dining room with dark décor, a bar for single diners, booths and tables. The look like the tables might have that customary sticky feel but honestly it was a fairly clean place. Maybe fate will give me the opportunity to visit again, but until then 2 stars.

This is one of our favorite restaurants! It is not fancy, it is great, simple comfort food at it’s best… The prices are great and the servings are more than anyone could ever need. Our favorite is the Country Fried Steak and fried macaroni and cheese. The steak is HUGE and you can never finish what is served to you, you definitely leave here full and happy! The waitresses are nice and the atmosphere is friendly. This restaurant is a favorite among local folks, for good reason! I promise, you won’t be disappointed! As for Schmoozie B., obviously NOT from the south with a comment like«isn’t the south known for great gravy?» Not everyone likes their omelets well done and your waitress was doing the right thing by asking how you wanted it cooked. I am not sure what kind of miraculous flavor you expected, it was scrambled egg with cheeseburger folded into the middle of it! You got exactly what you asked for! The only thing snottier than an undercooked omelet might just be you sweetie! You might try sticking to the chain restaurants where the food comes out of the consistently prepared frozen food packages right before they microwave it and then serve it to you. Granny’s Country Kitchen is home cooked REAL food. Obviously, you aren’t used to that…

If you are looking for food that is mediocre at best, then you will love Granny’s Country Kitchen in Icard, NC… I had an 3 egg omelet with american cheese, ground beef, onion and I got a bit worried when the waitress asked me ‘how do you want your eggs cooked?’…really? It’s an OMELET! I said it much nicer than that though… also ordered the biscuits and white gravy and hash browns(please add some onions)…my husband and our friend ordered the exact same thing… she asked my husband ‘how do you want your eggs cooked?’…which heightened my concern… well, everyone is entitled to an off day here and there… so I pushed my concern’s aside as the coffee was pretty darned good and that gave me hope… Breakfast arrived… plates were served… we looked at our meal’s with optimism and hope… it did look like it should be really, really tasty… It was disappointingly ‘flat’. Everything was cooked just fine. The eggs were done and I always appreciate that(I mean who wants snotty eggs)…the best thing on the table was the biscuit… but not the white gravy. Maybe I’m wrong, it has happened once or twice this last decade, but isn’t the south known for great gravy? Not Granny’s Country Kitchen. Will I eat here again? Only if I have no other choice… as I can always have coffee and toast… or maybe just coffee Schmoozie
