Roti Mama is the BOMB! I Love Malaysian food and I was so happy to find they opened this spot. And I’m giving four starts for the food it self. Not giving 5 stars only because I’m an absolute clean freak and the place is a hole in the wall and wasn’t thaaaat great on the eyes. BUT they nailed the food part where it counts. Lol We got to roti mama pretty close to closing time(it was a little hard to find), but was seated quite quickly and the Service was decent. We got Mee mamak, Chicken Rendang, Mee Curry laksa and fried rice. But was definitely way too much food for 2 people. The portions were really big and we definitely couldn’t finish it. Overall we were so glad we tried it! And The curry noodles are a must try if you check this place out. Happy eating!

Came here with a friend for lunch on a Saturday afternoon. It’s a small place but we were the first to arrive. We ordered a few dishes to share so we could try a little more. We started with a plain roti, which is served with some curry broth. The curry is really tasty. The roti reminded me of a fresh flour tortilla(which may be blasphemous but not intended to be!). Char kway teow with chicken was our noodle dish. I really enjoyed this. I tried one of the peppers that was served on the side and it was spicy. The flavor was really good as well. It has dark near chicken pieces and was cooked well. Lastly we had kang kung garlic and tofu. We took our server’s advice and skipped the rice. It was good but a wee bit salty. Rice wouldn’t have been a bad extra, especially if there was a curry dish. I’m definitely coming back to try more dishes.

The young lady was nice and she attended the clients well. Im used to the size of the location because the previous spot really packed them in. After I showed her we had a coupon for the lunch special she brought out that menu, it was significantly cheaper than the menu. The lunch special coupon was the same price listed on the page so Im not sure what was the deal. I had a 2.00 off coupon she let us use so we did get some discount. My daughter ordered a chicken dish and my wife asked for her if it was very hot and was told they cold make it less. For my daughter it was FIRE. Mt wife and I each tried a different soup to try them out. She got curry and I got the tom ka based. Very little chicken and the chicken had very little taste. My soup base was fair and hers was awful. We all three left very hungry. I dont think we will be back.

Came in here after work on a Thursday evening. The place was very nice and clean. The owner and waitress were very inviting and nice as well. But let’s get to the food… Roti Chanai: An appetizer dish that comes with curry sauce. The sauce had a nice spicy kick to it that really added a nice flavor to the Roti. If you split this with friends, it will cost you no more than $ 2 per person… so just get it! Char Kway Teow: A dish similar to Chow Fun in chinese cuisine and pad see ew in thai cuisine. The flavor was on point and the noodles and chicken were cooked perfectly. This type of dish usually has a tendency to be too salty at many places, but the flavors balanced very nicely at the Roti Mama. Sambal Fish Fillet: We had the option of getting this as a whole fish with the eyes and bones or just the fillet. We went with the Fillet because we figured it would be easier to eat. This one had a soft spicy flavor to it. I could eat this with a bowl of rice all day long. Beef Rendang: When this dish first came out, I thought it looked a bit weird. There was an interesting-looking layer of sauce that covered and surrounded it. After trying my first bite though, this easily became my favorite dish. The meat was very tender and the sauce goes very well with it. Make sure to get rice with this too! They recommended getting this with the coconut rice with this because it had a sweet flavor to balance out the meat. Definitely agree with that choice.

First timer: Beside the beloved Thai Gulf, so I decided to give this place a try with a take-out. With a decent amount of reviews, there cannot be any harm done and there was little to no expectations. I was curious to what this restaurant had in store. Upon entrance, there was a group of businessmen finishing up their lunch and an eldery man awaiting his order. I asked about their lunch specials and they give $ 1 off on main courses. I ordered Char Kway Teow with chicken, $ 8.99. And teh tarik milk tea, $ 2.50. The Char Kway Teow is like a sweeter bland Thai Pad See Ew(Pat Si-Io) and the teh tarik is identical to a Thai Tea; same color, same taste. Shady calculations: Nonetheless, the amount would be $ 7.99 + $ 2.50 for a lunch special plus tax. But the total amount turned out to be $ 13.78. Makes you wonder what would happen if you dined in with a group of people. Taste profile: Char Kway Teow, greasy, and an abundance of oil residue left on the styrofoam take-out container. The description is exactly what you get: flat rice noodles, reminisce of egg, bean sprouts, and lovely greaaaaaase. Yum. Again, it is a tad sweet if you are comparing it to Pad See Ew but these two dishes are supposedly to be from different countries. Tek Tarik milk tea, I need to try this one somewhere else, I heard that it can be quite similiar to Thai Tea so this was a freebie pass. Overall, would not recommend, come back or refer this restaurant to others. Makes me sad to create this review.

Having grown up with lots of Malaysian and Indonesian friends and co-workers, I’ve learned to loved their food on top of understanding their culture. I have only heard horrible things about this place but the group I was with insisted on trying it since it had a 4 Stars rating! I had zero hope since I was warned. But now having gone against what I knew I totally ate it today… with the group! I don’t even know where to start… The moment we enter, the place felt dirty. We had a large group of 10 people and had to move 3 tables together. There was only a lady and a cook. We moved the tables ourselves and they were so sticky. We asked if the tables could be cleaned. The lady came out to spray it down but also sprayed all of us, the ones sitting down got sprayed in their faces and the ones standing got their clothes sprayed on. She was so clueless that she was spraying toxic cleaner on people. Whatever we thought… this was our first sign!!! We finally sat down on the sticky chairs and the tables which were still so sticky, our sleeves were stuck to the tables. I’m not even kidding, 10 witnesses to attest to this! We thought, maybe the food will make up for the horrible start. Here we go: 01. Roti Chanai — $ 3.95 — 1 Star — This was served with a vegetarian curry. The roti was limped and soaked in oil. I’ve never had one that was this oily or flavorless. The curry had no spice in it, lacked so much! Horrible start… just saying! 02. Roti Beef Murtaback — $ 6.50 — 1 Star — Stuffed w/Beef & Onions — Again so oily and had ZERO flavors, it had the same bland curry as the plain roti. 03. Curry Fried Rice w/Chicken — $ 7.88 — 1 Stars — The rice used was obviously microwaved and I will let you know how I was able to confirm a bit later. The rice was just so dry and the curry had no flavor to remind us that it was curry except for the yellow coloring giving it away. No one finished this place and it was so bad, I didn’t even care to take a pix. 04. Char Kway Teow — $ 7.88 — 1 Star Flat rice noodles, egg, beansprouts, chives — Out of the dishes so far, this was OKAY, it reminded us of the Pad See Ew(Thai dish). The only difference was that it was sweeter. It didn’t have that wonderful Char flavor from the wok… it was just coated in the sweet soy sauce but with ZERO spice/flavors. 05. Mee Mamak — $ 7.88 — 1 Star Spice stir-fry yellow noodle with chicken, egg, veggie, bean sprouts — This came out and the noodles looked like it was broken and stirred around. The texture of the noodles made us think this was also reheated in the microwave… short cut the process and nuked the noodles then stir-fried. 06. Rendang w/Beef — $ 12.88 — 2.5 Stars Simmered in coconut milk, galangal, turmeric, lemongrass — By far this dish surprised it. It had the most flavors. That was the upside, the downside was that it was a tiny portion and the beef was a bit on the chewy side but the sauce resembled the familiar tasted I grew up eating. The low stars was for the portion and chewiness of the beef. This was all for the SAUCE, definitely the best of this visit!!! 07. Asam Fish — $ 10.88 — 1 Star Boneless fish in homemade tamarind spice sauce — The fish was NOT fresh but chewy, consistent of how it would be if you nuked it. The sauce was so bland and had some snap peas, chunks of tomatoes that really didn’t add to the dish. 08. Sambal Eggplant — $ 7.88 — 1 Star Eggplant stir-fry in homemade sambal chili paste — The chili sauce was not hot or tasty but it was actually bitter. The eggplant was chewy and the skin was rough. 09. Kangkung belachan — $ 7.88 — Zero Star The lady recommended this to us but didn’t say it was sold out till the very end of our meal. How can you not know you are out of this veggie yet highly recommend it!!! If the food was not bad enough, the service and information ruined it for us. First off, the place is just plain DIRTY. Their utensils were all sticky and dirty with food left on it, we had used so many paper napkins to clean it and it was still sticky with an oily base. The food came out VERYSLOW, each one came out 5 – 10 minutes apart. The tables next to us had a party of 8 people and were complaining about the same things. We got our dishes but with NO Rice… when we asked why the rices were taking so long, we were told they were microwaving each one. We almost fell out of our sticky chairs… I knew it! I said at the beginning of our visit that when the first dish came out, it tasted like a microwaved dish! It was… they were all nuked and then just garnished. We double asked to make sure we understood her correctly. She then confirmed it again that they were microwaving our dishes. As we all looked at each other with such disappointment, we knew it was time to leave. We gave the tables next to us our«COLD» microwaved rices and said it was on us! I’ve never been to any restaurant where the FOOD, SERVICE and establishment was so FILTHY!!!

Really enjoyed the food tonight. Being used to the Penang chain of Malaysian food in the East Coast(NYC, Philadelphia, and Edison, NJ), we really miss having Malaysian food on a regular basis. The price is a little pricy, considering it’s a hole in the wall place without much décor or ambiance and the menu offering is on the simple side. The home made dishes(even the Chili Sauce), nevertheless, is spectacular. My wife is vegetarian(not a true vegan) and she had quite a few dishes to pick from which is great(main dishes substitute for Tofu). If you are in the mood for something different: spicy and flavorful(not chili spicy but spice spicy) make sure you make a stop here. Remember, this place is only a few blocks on Beach Blvd from Bella Terra shopping center and there is Peruvian Rotisserie Chicken in the same plaza, Japanese Fusion Ikeda across the street and SF Boudin, 5 guys, Panda Express, Saffron Grill up a few blocks. There is really no reason to pay the full price in the commercial chain in in the you know what shopping center. One more thing, if you do not eat beef, make sure you call ahead, they were out of chicken tonight. Happy Eating !!

Roti Mama is tucked toward the back of a strip mall on the southeast corner of Beach & Garfield, behind Thai Gulf and Honeybaked Ham. We arrived at about 7 pm on Saturday night and it was deserted. We ordered the char kway teow with chicken, beef rendang, kangkung belchan, and roti beef murtabak. The food came out in about 10 minutes. The dishes are on the small side, so this was just about right for 2 people. The char kway teow($ 9 for chicken, more for other proteins) is basically like chinese chow fun or Thai pad see ew, consisting of wide rice noodles stir fried with, in this case, onions, green onions, bean sprouts and seasonings. It was flavorful, seasoned just right, but not overly complex. Rendang($ 13 for beef) is a meat dish that’s similar to a curried stew. The beef was braised and quite tender, but a bit dry. The sauce was very flavorful, but not spicy. We found the dish to be a bit oily. Ordered alone, it would just be enough for one person. Kangkung belachan($ 8) is water spinach(or ong choy in Chinese) stir fried in spicy shrimp paste(belachan is the name for the shrimp paste). We didn’t find it very spicy, but the shrimp paste is very flavorful. It’s a bit on the fishy side, so if you’re not crazy about that flavor profile, then you should pass on the belachan. This dish was also a bit oily for our taste. The roti beef murtabak($ 6.50) is basically roti(a type of flatbread) stuffed with beef, onions, and spices. The dish had a curry-like flavor profile, but very mild. It came with a curry sauce and some pickled onions that we felt gave the dish a nice punch. All in all, not a bad place, though a bit pricy for the size of the dishes. Not too many options for Malaysian in HB though(or anywhere in OC for that matter).

If Roti Mama were closer, I’d eat there every week. But the 1−½ hr drive from San Diego(on a good day) makes that impractical. However, I have stopped off twice for lunch on trips to/from LA, and as a Singaporean, I have to tell you… the food is the real deal. Betul!(Which means«true» in Malay). What have I tried? Roti Canai, Nasi Lemak, Beef Rendang, Mee Kari, Mee Mamak and Kangkong(Water Spinach) Belacan. Without reservation, all these dishes couldn’t have been more authentically Malaysian/Singaporean. Everything was fresh and flavorful and mouthwateringly delicious. The décor is somewhat spartan, but the restaurant is cosy and clean and the service is friendly and unobtrusive. I’d have enjoyed a an ice-cold Tiger beer with my meals, but perhaps an alcohol license is to come. Roti Mama is always going to be a stopover on the way to LA for me. I recommend it unreservedly to anyone who is craving damn shiok Malaysian/Singaporean food and to anyone else with an adventurous palate! Can’t wait to try more on the menu!

I’m not an expert in Malaysian, Indonesian, or Singaporean food, so I can’t say if it was authentic or not. The only thing I can say is that I’m incredibly disappointed after all the rave reviews from Unilocal.I commend the restaurant for their ideals of «Made from scratch.» However, I think they took the phrase to a whole new level. I don’t expect a restaurant to prep and cook everything when a customer orders it when they promise«made fresh and from scratch» food because it would take too long. To me, it simply means that everything is made by the restaurant and, yes, it’s ok to prep things ahead of time. As it is, I should warn anyone coming to this restaurant that it’s an understatement when other Unilocalers say that food takes a long time. I understand they were understaffed today(there was only 1 cook and 1 waitress), but the restaurant is tiny and they should have prepared for this. My friend complained to the waitress about the long wait and asked for the bill to pay for what we already received, but the waitress simply told us that the food was being cooked and was almost ready before walking back to the kitchen. When pressed again, she returned with what we ordered. It was obvious that the food was cooked in a hurry. The potatoes in the Kerutuk chicken were undercooked and hard in the center. The noodles of the Mee Goreng were still clumped together. They were dealing with a hard situation, and they made the best of it. The waitress had apologized and explained their situation. Instead of «the food is almost ready» every time we asked, I would personally have been happier if the waitress simply gave us an honest estimate of how long it would take and asked if we would like to wait or pay the bill. I would never expect a cook to compromise the integrity of his or her food, as they did today. *** This is from one experience. I’m sure not every day is like this, but it’s something to keep in mind when you come. The waitress was polite the whole time, even if I felt like she should have dealt with the situation differently. The food was promising and it was definitely made from scratch, but it just wasn’t properly cooked this time. *** *** NOTE: Unlike Mama K, I don’t delete or revise anything that I write. So I will keep this review in its original form. I would just like to know that the gracious comment from Mama K below is not the original one she left. If you ask any of my friends who read my review, she left a comment that bullied me and my friends. She took none of the blame for what happened and, instead, found fault in everything we(the customers) did. She has since revised it after messaging me a few times, and I sincerely hope that it’s because she realizes that there are 2 sides to every story and not because she is hiding the fact that she was bullying us. ***

Mama Teh Tarik Milk has a sweet milk tea flavor. The flavor of the tea is not too strong. If you love milk tea, you’ll love this. Rating: 4⁄5 Bandung Rose Syrup Milk looks like Strawberry Quik. The beautiful pink hue makes you want to taste strawberry but a hint of rose is actually experienced. Rating: 4.5÷5 Roti Beef Murtabak is filled with beef and onion. The best way to describe it is an Asian crêpe. The beef and onion filling is almost like an omelet with slight curry flavor. Each bite is best with the curry sauce and pieces of pickled onion creating the perfect umami flavor. The curry sauce is addictively delicious! Rating: 4.5÷5 Mee Goreng is stir-fried yellow egg noodles with spices and chicken. It is similar to chicken chow mein but different. The spices are Asian and Indian with a slightly spicy kick. The chicken absorbs a lot of the flavors for a power-packed dish. Rating: 4.5÷5 Kerutuk is sauce simmered in spices, potatoes, and beef. It is slightly spicy. The beef is a little chewy but has a really good flavor. Using a different cut or simmering the beef longer will help to make it tender. The potatoes are soft and just melt in your mouth. Rating: 3.8÷5 Kankung Belachan is water spinach in a spiced shrimp paste. The water spinach has a spinach texture but has a greener flavor. The shrimp paste is spicy and salty but perfectly balances with the flavor of the water spinach. Rating: 4⁄5 Masak Lemak Chili Padi with Yellow Sauce is simmered in spices, coconut milk, and tiger prawns. The Yellow Sauce is addictive with bright turmeric flavor. You can put it on anything and it will taste good. The prawns are a little overcooked and also need to be deveined. Maybe cooking the prawns separately and then adding it to the sauce right before plating would help keep it perfectly cooked. Rating: 4.5÷5 Whole Fried Fish Sambal is a whole fried fish topped with homemade sambal. The sambal is rich, thick, and spicy. The sambal is overpowering and the fish is indecipherable. It might be best to serve the sauce on the side. It would also keep the skin of the fish crispy instead of soggy from the sambal. Rating: 4⁄5 Fried Bananas are served with pandan ice cream. The bananas are fried to crispy perfection. The sweet banana inside becomes a pudding, custard-like texture inside. Pandan ice cream is very different. It has young coconut and taro flavors. The texture is creamy and fluffy. Rating: 3.8÷5

I really liked the tiny Thai place that used to be here. Thai Gulf moved a couple of doors down in Roti Mama moved in. The reviews were good but I had never tried Malasian or Indonesian food before. I hired a new girl at work straight out of college and she grew up in Indonesia. She moved here from Michigan St. a few months ago so I wanted her opinion of her native cuisine. We grabbed lunch on Friday they were not too busy. Still a small spot but the tables were roomy enough. Very limited décor but the place was comfortable. My friend jumped right in and she loved the menu, really looking forward to trying a few dishes. We started with the roti which is their version of naan or flatbread. It was served piping hot with a Chanai chicken curry sauce. Fabulous, flavorful, tangy. Next was the Nasi Lemak which is a simple coconut white rice, served with a spicy sambal sauce, fried anchovies, baked peanuts and a cold hard boiled egg. It sounded so gross but was simple and delicious. Wonderful flavors with the rice and the other items were like side snacks. Mee goreng is a fried egg noodle dish stir fried chicken. Very good flavor and a unique texture. The one dish my friend was looking for was a rendang. The waitress says this used to on the menu but it takes 2 hours to cook it properly. She said the cook can make a version of it if we chose to try it. We did, and it was not that great. We also ordered a specialty drink called Chendol but it never came. We were told it was not ready yet. Overall, a very unique place with really good authentic food.

I haven’t been to too many Malaysian restaurants because, frankly, there aren’t that many around OC. When I first heard about Roti Mama, I was part curious and part excited. Roti Mama is a small family run restaurant. It may be a small hole-in-the-wall restaurant but people who run it have big hearts and the food is equally bold. Every dish is made with spices made by Mama herself. You will not find any store bought jar spice in the kitchen. Even the Sambal sauce is made in house. My husband and I tried quite a few dishes as you can see in my pictures. All of them flavorful and nicely prepared. Roti Chanai is homemade hand-tossed and served with curry sauce. Want some meat with it? Try the Roti Beef Murtaback which is stuffed with beef and onion. Mee Goren is Mama’s specialty stir-fry yellow egg noodle. Kerutuk Sauce is the ‘Meat and Potato’ dish, simmered in fennel, star anise, cumming spices and potato. Order it with beef or chicken. Char Kway Teo is my childhood favorite — Stir fry flat rice noodle, egg, bean sprouts, chives. Want it extra spicy or less spicy? Just ask, they will cook it to accommodate your preference. Service is very friendly as well. This is one neighborhood eatery that deserves your support. But most of all, your tummy will thank you, too.

I’m from Singapore and always excited when I learn about new Singapore/Malaysian restaurants. Char Kwei Tieu with beef–($ 10) A little on the bland side. Nasi Lamak– plain is $ 6, we opt to add the mama’s chicken which is additional $ 5! The red chili sauce that comes with this dish is very tasty and compliments the dishes. The anchovies and peanuts and coconut rice is tasty. Curry puffs($ 2 a piece). I wished they add eggs and onions to this. Ice chandol.($ 5 a cup) is really pricey. It’s a Malaysian dessert drink. Service is a little slow. It took a while for the food to come out. They don’t serve beef rendang, and Laksa(I didn’t see it on the menu) anymore and they ran out of the kueh(Malaysian dessert) The small portion size for the price is a little high. But overall, I think Roti Mama has a lot of potential.

I was excited to try Indonesian/Malaysian food for the first time as my Indonesian roommate told me about this place and approved(for authenticity/deliciousness). And I sure did fall in love. I’m Filipino myself and find that this cuisine can often crossover into Philippine cuisine. The shrimp paste steamed spinach dish screamed to me so much of tropical Philippines dishes. The only thing major about Indonesian/Malaysian cuisine is their use of spice! And this place delivered such delicious flavors. My friend and I decided to order the Roti with Curry Sauce, which was a lovely, light dish to start with. The roti bread was nice and fluffy but thin and oily/tasty at the same time. The curry sauce was a bit on the more watery side, as I love my curry thick and creamy, but it sufficed with the Roti. We ordered plates of the Nasi Lemak, coconut rice dish with chicken pops, hard-boiled egg, cucumber, a spice sauce and peanuts with anchovies. It was DELICIOUS and definitely satisfied. The shrimp paste spinach dish(Kangkung Belachan) was a lovely and well-balancing vegetable dish that paired well with our main plate. Uggghhhh my mouth is watering just thinking of it all. This place has the Indonesian stamp of approval from my roommate. And I was in love with its hole-in-the-wall special small gem that definitely shows its love in the food. A tiny shop but cultural epicenter once you walk in, the workers were definitely very courteous the slow Sunday afternoon I came in on. I’ll definitely be back the next time I’m craving this cuisine, as solid, authentic places are hard to come by!

First time having Malaysian and Indonesian food and I enjoyed every bite! It reminded me of Thai food a little! Roti beef mutarbak was delicious! Basically beef and onions wrapped in slightly crispy oaReminds me of Chinese beef rolls! Anyways, the sauce that comes with it is very tasty! It had some spiciness and curry flavored to it! The sauce is on the watery side. Great concoction! Malaysian/Indonesian version of a French Dip! :) Rendang beef with coconut rice was pretty good! I had the roti beef first so I had that more than the rendang beef. Beef itself was tender and all the spices blended well making this a tasty dish! The coconut rice wasn’t as flavorful but that’s probably because the beef trumped it. Mama tea was delicious! It was little too sweet but it was much better than I thought! Definitely a must try! Service was friendly and helpful! Enjoy! :)

This was a really bad experience. The food was terrible. Maybe they were having a bad night but don’t think so. The attitude of the server sucked. We ordered roti canai and satay for appetizers. The banana leaf fish and rendang chicken as entrees came out before the appetizers. When asked what happened to the appetizers. The answer was that they had run out of dough and needed to make it fresh. It would have been helpful if they had told us upfront. Also the size of the satay chicken was ridiculously small. When asked they said they gave us 5 instead of four. Compared to belacan grill they should have given us 15 at this price. Satay came out last as an appetizer and when asked what happened the attitude was«you know we have to grill it right» The rendang chicken was bony with next to no flesh on the bones. Overall the only good thing was the fish. Much better value at belacan and other places in the area. I have never posted a bad review on Unilocal before and I give the benefit of doubt in 99pc of cases but this was just a horrible experience.

I was craving Malaysian food and decided to randomly Unilocal some restaurants close to me. This was the place that popped up «hot and new» around the area so gave it a try. It was a tiny little place around the corner. There was supposedly a green Thai tea for the check-in, but the waitress said they were out and gave me some rose syrup water instead. Can’t complaint because it’s free but I really wanted to know what green Thai tea taste like. I tried the roti at every Thai/Malay/Singapore restaurant that I’ve been to before. It’s usually a good indication of how the food is. The roti was really fresh and warm. The curry that came with it however, was not as strong. It had a very liquid consistency rather than paste-y, but no big deal. Next is my indo fried rice. Flavor/aroma? Check. Egg on the top? Check. Shrimp chips?! Woot! Gotta love this dish, you can never go wrong with indo fried rice anywhere. After I browsed through the menu I decided to order some fried chicken as well. When I saw the picture for mama meehoon I thought the«friend chicken» that I wanted was called mama spiced chicken and I ordered it.(It looked like it from the picture) I ended up eating anyways because it was actually really spiced and flavorful. There were just a series of unexpected event during my first visit. But the food was great, and I would go back to try again.
