Brethren Christian Junior & Senior High School

Finding Brethren Christian truly has changed our life. My son was attending middle school at a very big, well regarded middle/​high school in Newport Beach. Their idea of separating the younger students from the high school kids was completely inefficient. He went from a happy, achieving elementary student to D’s and F’s and near depression. The class sizes were up to 40 (not just in PE!) and the environment was sink or swim. A friend said she heard of a small Christian school «good in the arts» — would I want to visit it with her? Why not, I thought, although private education had never been in my plan at this stage. Within the first hour, at the ‘Prospective’ luncheon I felt a peace come over me. The sense of the staff we met, and the students who shared their experience was amazing. We applied, I prayed and I was able to enroll my son. With in a few weeks on campus, he quietly shared in our commute, that he understood why I made the choice, and moved him to BCHS– and I quote «I’m not scared everyday anymore.» From that moment on, I have never looked back, and he has soared. Now a freshman, he is happy, engaged, challenged, and succeeding. The activities are numerous, his friends are diverse and fun, and while the classes are rigorous, it is astounding to know without a doubt, that he is, and will be in high school classes of less than 25 ! He is not a number– he is known, and seen, and cared for by his teachers and every person on the campus– No cost can be put on that. As he grows in his education, music, and sports abilities, there is an added bonus to a Brethren school experience– faith. Whether he becomes a musician, scientist, or barrista– I know he will be a good person– for everyday, in all ways, he is shown how to do life — in a Christ like fashion. Simply put he’s learning the Golden Rule, and so much more and he, (and I) are loving every minute of it.

Three of my children have attended Brethren Christian, and we couldn’t be more pleased. The academic preparation for university level work was excellent. Two of our children were recognized as outstanding scholars at their colleges. All three attended top tier universities. More important to us was the spiritual environment. Brethren is truly a «Christian» school. Subjects are taught by a caring, expert staff from a Biblical perspective. We would heartily recommend this school!!!

We’re relatively new to the BCHS family, but we love it. Our daughter loves it. I wish more people were aware of it. They do so much with so little.

I did not nor do my children attend Brethren Christian School. However, we have some wonderful friends whose children attend (ed) the school and are part of the music program. Consequently, we have attended multiple concerts over the past 8 or 9 years on the Brethren campus. I am writing this review as a testament to the high academic standard and incredible musical growth and development that I’ve been able to witness in the lives of these young people.
The jazz concerts are far and away the best I’ve heard at the jr. high and high school level. In fact, I would put the high school jazz band up against many of the university level ensembles in the area. The students are given opportunities to study with private music instructors on campus. In addition, highly qualified clinicians (studio musicians from the L.A. area) serve as special guests on some of the concerts.
The facility is nice, well kept, and easy to find. In all, our limited experience with the school has been very positive. If we lived closer and had the money to spend, Brethren Christian would be at or near the top of our list for meeting the educational needs of our own children.
