The Art Institute of Houston

I got pretty lucky. I went there when it was still affordable. Graduated fast, already got basics from a community college beforehand, and landed an internship that turned into a job. I’m also lucky in the fact that my credits became transferable and I used that opportunity to go to a more affordable state university and get a a BS (bachelor of science not bullshit) degree.
Sorry to hear that it has gone downhill.

This is the worst school. I can only find jobs paying $ 10 – 12 an hour. I owe over $ 100,000 in student loan debt. Please do not go to this school if you read this. You can learn anything they teach by tutorials online or an internship. I ruined my life by going to this school.

My story, I came from a small town that’s 6 hours away and the recruiters went out of their way following and checking up and me so I got really really good vibes from this school. When I got there I got a really good rate of $ 220 a month for school and that included housing. The school was okay but I didn’t feel I was getting much out of it. Like at all at all. Basically it’s here’s the recipe, make it, throw it away, go home. I found it more self taught. I had maybe 2 good chefs that actually taught me things and took time to teach. I learned more knife skills and cleanliness more than anything but let’s face it, that can be taught at home and it would have saved me $ 80k. Fast forward 9 months later when it was halfway through the school year and time to renew my housing lease. Before I signed any paperwork they notified me that with the renewal my bill was going to increase to $ 860 a month until graduation! I was only making $ 1100 a month and I was on my own I could not afford that but if I dropped out I was going to still have to pay back everything along with paying back 3 student loans at once! I got out of housing and boy did they make that difficult! As soon as your money is running away from them they give you the hardest time ever!!! The only reason why I stuck it out was so I could at least qualify for student loan forgiveness. This school defiantly does not give you your money’s worth. If you’re serious about culinary go to CIA or Cordon Bleu! Don’t get sucked into this thieving school!

I wouldn’t even give this school one star. More like negative one star. The staff does not listen they always lose documents and then blame it on you for their terrible staff. Very disorganized. This school only cares about $$$$$$$$$.
They fired the only dependable person in registrar, who was in charge of V.I. for students. Some teachers do their jobs well, but there are plenty that don’t.
Several students, myself included, made a complaint about a teacher who was giving everyone C’s regardless of what work they were handing in. They still haven’t done anything about it, nor do I expect they will ever do anything about it unless we consistently pester them everyday.
On the lost documents note: I have submitted my official transcripts TWICE and paid for it TWICE. Both times, a staff member «misplaced» my transcripts. They were just hoping I would give up on trying to get more credits transferred. I had to go in almost everyday for 3 – 4 weeks to see if they were processing it. It took from September to January to finally get my transcripts in the third time. During which they kept losing them and it would take up to 2wks for the next one to come in. One staff member actually genuinely cared and reordered the third transcript for me and put it into the system. (I hand delivered 2x!!!)
They also lost several forms for documentation purposes, important forms with my social and address, etc.
EXAM WEEK. HISTORY TEACHER SENT NO EMAIL TO ALERT HER STUDENTS THAT SHE WOULD START CLASS AND HOUR LATE. She gave everyone C’s and F’s regardless of the quality of the work turned in. Do not take a class with Daisy Durham.

Worst mistake of my life. I went to The Art of Institute in 2004 and im still paying for the student loan. The teachers and education are not worth the amount of money you pay. I had a female teacher who had a crush on my boyfriend at the time in her class and she was grading accordingly. I finally traded one of our projects with him to see if she would still consider his work an A and mine a failing grade. Sure enough my project that he turned in got an A and his got an F. Id like to say not all the teachers were same but I didnt consider any of them any different than any community college teacher. I would save my money and time before anyone decides coming here.

PLEASE READ AND TAKE THIS REVIEW SERIOUSLY! This school is only about making money and if I would have known better, I would not have attended this school. If there was a way to trade in my degree for my money I would do so without hesitation.
I have two degrees (Business and Marketing) from two major universities and after recently completing my AAS for Culinary Arts, I now have three! This school is by far the most unprofessional and the worst school you could attend for the expensive price you pay!
I have never had so many issues with a business or school that I have had to deal with. I will try to state only facts but my emotions may seem to to appear throughout this review.
1. You need to know that this school charges $ 480 PER CREDIT! To receive your AAS, you need 96 credits. Thank God a few Number of mine transferred over. If you don’t have any, multiply $ 480 times 96. Now remember that DOES NOT include your lab fees (ranging from 1 – 300 dollars per lab class). You also have digital fees and other fees that shouldn’t be charged more than once. Half of the things you pay for will not apply to you every quarter.
2. The staff is completely unprofessional and it will often be questionable on how they were approved for the job. You really need to read, review, and stay on top of everything that comes from Student Services, VA, and Accounting. If you don’t understand something, stand up for yourself and ask questions. Make them do their jobs! The attitudes that you will receive are normal because there are no guidelines that they are made to follow and they will say anything to just get you out of their face.
3. Should you realize that this school is a complete waste of money and become fed up, know in advance that your credits will not transfer! I was going to transfer after my third quarter when I found out that I would have to retake all of the classes and that 20 000 would have been wasted on nothing. That is the only reason I stayed and it was very hard on me emotionally. I was harassed by several teachers and after going higher, I was simply made a mockery of! I was cursed out by one of my teachers on the first day of class and was talked down to for the whole quarter. He was later fired for making racist remarks to another student. I have also witnessed with my own eyes, teachers who have overlooked drug deals and have even bought drugs. BTW, the Art institute has a large number of students who not only deal at the school but also do drugs at the school. There were many nights that I had to have the security guards walk me out because I did not feel safe.
4. If you take your school work seriously, make sure you have your own laptops. The computers in the library are almost always occupied by students who use it for FB, Instagram, YouTube, and other things that have no relevance to school.
5. THE PRODUCTS. If you are coming to this school with high hopes of getting your hands on good products, think twice. Most of the food that is ordered is pure trash. Usually the produce is rotten or already perishing when we get it. The meats have to be thrown away because they are no good and are dangerous to consume. Sometimes we would cook them simply for presentation only. That’s sad considering you end up paying 56 000+ for a half ass education. I took pictures thought my time at AI and I don’t see how the school has passed inspections. The DELI IS A NO GO! I had food poisoning twice from this school where I ended up at the hospital. After going to deli staff, the matter was shrugged off and completely disregarded. I had to work in the deli for two days as part of my class and it was so disgusting. Sanitation practices were not used and lots if the food such as veggies, fruits, and bread had mold but were still used. I mentioned it to one of my instructors and was simply told «just don’t eat it». After that I NEVER are in there again.
5. The lab teachers are barely qualified to teach! I don’t understand on how a teacher can grade on the things they don’t know themselves and can’t do themselves. This happens a lot with the culinary instructors.
The list above is just a FEW issues that I had to deal with for nearly two years. If I was offered free tuition to get my BA. I would not go! The only reason I gave the school the two stars they did receive would be for the few good members of the staff that they do have and I don’t mind mentioning names.
Jay works at the reception desk and she is by far one if the friendliest and most helpful souls that you will encounter there. Mrs. Sanchez (speech) is the best teacher that school has. Not only is she a great teacher but she is a great person. Just a little bit crazy though. Then there are the chefs I learned the most from: Chef Waitts, Jones, Pierre, and Small! They are strict but they will treat you like adults and will make sure you know things before leaving their class. Other then those few, the staff and school receive a NO GO from me!

Are you a prospective culinary student shopping around for a good culinary institution? Well, this is perhaps the most important review that you will ever read.
This is the best culinary education that you can find… IN HOUSTON. I was told be several people that the Art Institute was a complete waste of time and money. I began my education with the Art Institute at the age of 24. At the age of 25, I began seeking employment in a kitchen. A local executive chef at a Marriott looked at my resume that completely lacked any sort of physically demanding job or any sort of kitchen experience and called me in only because I was currently attending the Art Institute. He took my application seriously because my expensive education proved to him that I would have been able to take my job seriously. Anywhere else, I would have been lucky to have been offered $ 8.50/hourly, but this chef offered me a mystery box challenge that would decide my pay rate.
I was given 10 secret ingredients and 2 hours to cook a 3 course meal. I took the 6 months of education that I had accrued up to that point in time and proved that while I am fresh in the industry, I have some skills. I was then offered a very fair pay rate– one that I would be able to pay my bills with. There are a lot of people who will try and tell you that culinary school is not worth it because they started in a kitchen at the age of 18 making $ 8/​hr and learned everything they needed to know working their way up. That is cool if you don’t have bills to pay.
Your alternatives within the city limits are Houston Community College and Le Notre. Le Notre teaches only classical French technique passed down from some guy named Le Notre who was considered a «modern day Escoffier». You can get that education pretty much anywhere.
A degree from HCC is laughable. I’ve seen their kitchens and equipment and they teach you to cook with Betty Crocker. You will not learn anything and will not become anything.
The Art Institute has several required courses in sustainability, cost control, management by menu, food and beverage management, concepts and techniques with a lot of valuable information. They offer hands on lab classes in fundamentals (classical Escoffier French cuisine), Latin, Asian, American Regional, Classical European, A La Carte, Baking, etc. To date it is the best culinary school Houston has to offer, you can find better in the state of TX.
The Bad– For profit institutions are almost a scam. Yes, the education that I am getting there is real. No, it is not worth the money. For profit institutions get 86% of their revenue from TAXPAYER DOLLARS. Somehow, the The Art Institute still charges $ 48,000 for only 2 years of education. Rice University is the only education you can get in Houston that is more expensive. Financial aid is a joke and your adviser will try to talk you out of accepting free money from the government by offering lower monthly payments if you decide to take loans. None of the advisers I feel are actually there to help you… rather, they are all there to screw you out of as much money as possible.
After each lab class we have to clean our own classrooms and wash all of our dishes. Your instructors try to tell you that this is to prepare you for the real world. I am, however, currently working in a kitchen and we have this marvelous thing called DISHWASHERS. These hours we waste would be put to better use if we were able to perhaps learn how to prepare another extra special dish. And because all the students clean half-​heartedly, everything is disgusting. The cutting boards reek of bacteria and are slimey. You’d think at $ 48,000 a year a head (which is almost pure profit) the could hire a few dishwashers to maximize class time.
Are there better culinary institutions out there? MOST DEFINITELY. Just flipping through the Le Cordon Bleu textbook makes that apparent. If you can go to Dallas or Austin to go to Le Cordon Bleu, do it. Its better education for less money.
And a note to kids fresh out of high school and lazy people. Unless food is your passion, don’t waste your time here.18 year olds and lazy nitwits are a drain on everyone in the class room. They play around and waste a lot of class time. Often, they drop out. For the past 2 quarters I’ve been taking morning classes from 6:30 AM to 11 AM. Class isn’t dismissed until we are done and things are clean. Every class I’ve been to for 6 months has run late because half the class has no consideration for the working half. I then have to go to work from 1:30 PM to 10 PM. I average about 4 hours of sleep a night to finish homework. If you come to class to play around, people like me hate you. Stay away.

I took a drawing class here and LOVED it! It was a great experience.

I always wanted to write about my experience about this school. Really, I wanted to warn potential students to ‘do you homework’ before you actually consider going here, as well as any Art Institute. I earned my BFA in Graphic Design as well as a Diploma in Web Development here, and have personally gone to two, Houston and Austin. Here’s what I encountered.
First off, to real art students that are wanting to enrich their craft by collaborating with like minded people, consider looking elsewhere for an education. To those that respect the idea of continuing their education, and expect their fellow students to do the same, look elsewhere. This school, and all others under its name only take students based on paying the tuition, and not on the quality of their work. If you’re a BFA student, it will take approx. a year to two years to ‘weed’ out the students that just don’t care about being there, and put a drag on the class and the faculty. If you are a associates or diploma student, you will have people like this throughout your time here.
Your tuition costs will be the next big thing for you to think about. Depending on your duration at the school, it can be upwards of $ 80,000+ just for a BFA, and of course textbooks are extra. If you have a degree focusing on computers, either be comfortable staying at school all day and night, or invest in a fast computer & the programs necessary to complete your work. Excuses of not having either won’t fly here. If you need a second job to make ends meet while being here, sleep when you can, and don’t expect any sympathy from your teachers for being late or having late work. Six tardies or three absences and you’re dropped from class, with few exceptions.
If you plan to live ‘on campus’ be warned that most likely you will be put together with another student that has been picked mostly at random, despite what they say about matching based on common interests. If you’re just out of high school, it might be an adventure for you. If you’re a little older, and doing it looking for friends like I did, you will be in for a really bad experience. I understand college is college, but unless you like your place messy, and your roommates loud and inconsiderate as long as you’re there, look elsewhere. Studio apartments can be had for cheaper than most ‘on campus’ options offered by Ai. Do your research, as under them, it can get expensive really quickly.
The school itself doesn’t really inspire any creativity as it’s mostly rented office space, with classrooms that are basic high school classrooms. I might’ve been expecting more here, but nothing inspired me walking through the bland halls of the school to get to my class. Looking online at other art schools, Full Sail, Pratt, Otis, visually this school left me wanting more installations by the students showing their work.
The teachers for the most part did a great job at what they taught. I had my favorites, and always looked forward to their antics on a daily basis. It’s hard keeping people focused during 4 hour classes, but most of them did. Every school has politics among the faculty, and occasionally you’ll see outbursts from the teachers about what’s going on. They’re only human, and aren’t perfect. I’d give them some slack for the most part on this. Just don’t piss them off, because as each teacher teaches multiple things, if you’re perceived as a bad student from the beginning, it will be close to impossible to shake that image of you throughout your time at Ai. Come to learn, not to tell your sob story, and hope the teacher will take pity on you with a grade you didn’t earn.
On the Ai Campus, the amenities were decent. The Houston campus had a cafeteria which was always busy, but served decent fast food most of the day. The library had a pretty good selection of books and magazines, but their computers were quite outdated, despite being an art school. The computer labs had faster computers with a step below up to date software on them. Never really had an issue here, unless I was working on a later version, then tried to open on their machines. They do offer rental equipment such as cameras, lighting, and audio, but these items aren’t available to every student. Their copy center was pretty cool, but was always busy due to students printing proofs just before class. Plan ahead and you won’t have a problem. Parking was covered and an issue the later you got to class, so keep that in mind. They had security walk the place, so it always felt safe. I’m not sure if any car break-​ins ever happened, but just be smart about what you leave in your car and you’ll be fine.
After all this, and you STILL plan to go to this school, take my advice and try to make friends with all the productive people as well as the teachers that inspire you the most. Also, do your best to keep in touch with all of them, via Facebook or LinkedIn. That alone will make the experience worth it, and will help you in the professional career.

They have a great student kitchen that is pretty cheap!

I have stuck up for this school for the last few years but I just can not do it anymore. I am a current culinary art student at the AI of Houston.
EDMC is the owner of The Art Institute. They decided to build some fancy new campus right off of 59 S. It is an awesome building with all new kitchens and awesome facilities but the downside is that they have had to fire half of the school including most of my teachers. Many teachers have been laid off before the quarter even finished!
As a student who pays over $ 1200 PER CLASS I expect a lot in return for my money. Half the time we are not provided with the correct ingredients for our menus, I have been screamed at and threatened by other students, I have had teachers give us the answers for our test or just basically hold our hand through the whole class to make sure everyone passes as to not blemish their performance records as teachers, I have heard NUMEROUS complaints from every single one of my teachers about the way they are treated, there are very limited resources for job placement, the financial advisors are hardly ever there, and I have been trying to find help to find scholarships but there only seems to be 2 available that they know of.
You may ask why I have not left but I am in my last few quarters before graduation and at this point it would be more of a detriment to leave than to stay. It was not always like this. Before they built the new school things were a little more stable (or so it seemed). My teachers had been there for years and seemed to be happy. I can’t wait to get the hell away from this place.
Honestly, go to CIA or Le Notre. I have had friends graduate from those Institutes and I believe that they received a much better education than I have.

I went here 2 years ago but graduated from Art Institute of Dallas, and thank god I did. AI Dallas was actually 4x’s better because the time I was attending in Houston, the teachers teaching there was ridiculous that didn’t even meet my standards of education for adobe software’s. Some of the classes felt like they were just excuses for you to take so they can take more money out of you. In general, it was not organized at all. Not to mention there was drama among the design department as well. It was just a mess. Even half of the student I met there, had no passion so I left as quick as possible.
Most of the classes they taught, I ALREADY KNEW. I trained myself and it was just a waste. Once I transferred to Dallas, you realized how DIFFERENT it is from the education in AI Houston and AI Dallas.
I did find out recently they had moved to a new location which doesn’t mean anything, but hopefully they got better courses and know how to teach better.
Well I moved back to Houston, and now I have my job. I have learned alot from the other school, and I hope the Houston one got better for the sake of others spending on their expensive tuition.
The only positive thing I can say about this school is that I had met some cool people there. Oh did I mention I ran into my friend from AI Houston in AI Dallas? LOL. it was funny how we both left for the same reason and ended up in the same place

I currently attend the Art Institute of Houston. I am getting my 2^nd BFA this time in photography, some classes are super useful and others not so much.
1. There are a few classes where I felt like in the amount of time that we had in there (4 hours per class) I could have learned a lot more than we did and it dragged on a little.
2. There are classes where I’m thinking to myself, I could have just gotten a book recommendation list or a list of photographers to research and do it myself instead of paying a little over a grand on that one class because private school is super expensive.
3. Not all classes are offered each trimester because many of the teachers teach multiple classes and you pretty much will see those few all the time. If you want to get the classes you really want to take 1^st you may not be able to.
It really gets down to who you have as a teacher. There will be certain ones where they are concrete in a certain area and what they like to teach or how they like to teach a subject. I could tell you how each teacher is and who is my favorite as far as the most knowledge gaining personally and the one who pushes you to really do better, but I’m not naming any names on here.
I’m not sure how strict I can rate it because I have already gotten my BFA from UT in Studio art so going through all the general education classes over there compared to some of the ones I still have to take here it seems like a piece of cake whereas many of the other students struggle. So teachers make it not as hard, or it’s that I’m just more experienced and been through harder classes.
As of now i wish I could take the really important classes of what I consider to be of the most use to myself so that I could even get out without graduating and spending so much extra and just take the knowledge since I already have a BFA. But that doesn’t seem like it is going to happen.

I went to AIH for my culinary degree and had a positive experience. There were aspects that were very disappointing, such as the culinary study abroad trip to China that turned out to be a VERY expensive canned tourist operation. Then there was the course in A la Carte cuisine which turned out to be a step above working in a Mickey D’s. Most of the «classroom» classes seemed like an afterthought and were unstructured and pointless.
But overall, I had many awesome classes and great instructors at AIH. The «lab» classes were small and offered great hands-​on experience. I would recommend taking labs with Chef Fernandez and Chef MacArevey — They add a lot of useful context to their lectures and have high standards. I agree with another reviewer that the way to make the most of this experience is to get a job in the industry. It boggles my mind to see all these people dropping 50g’s on culinary school and then refusing to get a kitchen job because they can make more waitressing. And to David N.‘s point, yes, some of the students at AIH are not that impressive, but what else can you expect from a school whose only criterion for admission is that you can pay? But I digress…
Back to the point, you get out of AIH what you put into it. Most instructors are totally open to working with you outside of class time, giving you pointers or hooking you up with potential employers. Do most students take advantage of this? No. But the resources are there.
Also, from personal experience the AIH network is very strong in the Houston food scene. Chris Shepherd, Randy Evans, all their sous chefs, Tiffany Derry, and the entire line at Brennan’s are AIH alum. Not too shabby!
AIH is A-​OK in my book. I had to dock an extra star for the price tag on this education though. AIH appears to spend a ton on advertisements, and sometimes it seems like the powers that be (aka Goldman Sachs) care more about maximizing enrollment than the quality of the education they provide. But in the end I made some great connections and learned everything I needed to know to get out there and cook professionally.

So my review is only of what I’ve seen from helping my gf. She’s here to add on a BS in photography. She already has a BA from UT, so it’s just to get more practical usage instead of theory based learning.
First off, I was already very hesitant when she told me she was going back to this school since I had only heard bad things. Her studies are actually pretty useful and I’ve taken a lot from her classes too.
So why such a low rating? The employees and other students.
I’ve been to their campus 2 times and both on the weekends to help her set up for studio. Her studio times are set up in 4 hour blocks. I’m used to signing up for a slot and actually being able to start right then. Here, her studio time say for example is 12 – 4 pm, the school itself doesn’t even open until 12:05, then no one is there to unlock the studio or rent out the equipment so by the time you’re set up its 1 pm. Wasting a whole hour of studio time. And then her classmates are so inconsiderate. They would walk in and out of the area, interrupting the shoot.
I was so annoyed for her. Don’t get me wrong, education, is what you make of it no matter where you go. But from my observation of her classmates I am not impressed.

Want to see what a current AiH culinary student does?
I mean it is the very best of culinary training in Houston and honestly has produced some of Houston’s finest Chef Owners. The training is truly professional grade and takes nothing for granted. We have covered, and will continue to cover everything that is required of a Chef.
Will you have the same 5 star experience as the CIA in NY? No. But you will be in Houston, where you can support your family and skip paying state income tax.
For me, we are starting out around Season 1 of Good Eats… A lot of the basics I have covered in my own, non-​professional, home training. But every single day I learn something that I didn’t know before. It is making me more well rounded and aware of the science behind the finished dishes. This is going to allow me to alter the dishes and add my own unique take on the ingredients that I want to highlight.
The Chefs (professors) are all very well seasoned in the industry and in culinary competition. They are straight forward and overall very personable. I appreciate their respect for the profession and that they instill that professionalism in the students on a daily basis.
We are constantly encouraged to take jobs in kitchens and to work on our skills in real service environments. This is the factor that can’t be completely simulated in class. No matter what the circumstances in the school kitchens, it’s not a busy service time at a venerable eatery.
Take the time to explore your options with culinary school. If you are young and flush with your parents cash, check out the European and East Coast options. If you are passionate about food, engaged in a real life job and know that you can’t live without following your dreams right here in Houston… there is no better place to come apply yourself.
I started this review with 4 stars, but I am going to bump it to 5… I am proud of being a student here and I believe I have the potential to learn a considerable amount from this school. This is as good as it gets in Houston.

i went to school here back in 2000. My major was Graphic Design. I didn’t know what that even was. I just remember drawing naked people for grades and meeting a bunch of super kool life long friends that I am so close to nine years later. The teachers at that time that i had were pretty rude and pretentious, but that was many years ago. There may very well be great teachers there now. I am not to say. Be careful about the accreditation.

First to review my college??? Really…
Well, as a culinary student, I think it was more beneficial to have worked at The Houston Country Club then it was to go to college here. I now have a piece of paper that says I have a degree, but really… whats in a piece of paper? I had a few great teachers… but I learned how to read recipes. AIH did nothing to personally help me get any of the jobs I got and maybe I’m just bitter. I just feel if you really want to learn culinary, GO learn from a great chef in a working kitchen. Experience and time taught me what I know. You don’t walk out expectiing to make anything more than you would if you had not attended school and people commonly think that while they are going to school here. Classes do NOT make you a chef.
I can also tell you, if you are dead set on culinary arts school, I would choose this one over the others. The teachers are nice but I highly recommend any classes taught by Chef MacArvey. I had the luxury of working with him before he taught and he is an amazing instructor…
Just my personal rant. I have never been asked if I have a degree in culinary arts. Ever.
