The Gregory School is located near present-day ‘Midtown’, in the historically black community known as Freedmen’s Town. The school was Houston’s first black public school and has been renovated as a museum + library showcasing the history of the town established by African-Americans after the Civil War — hence the name Freedmen’s Town. I was so glad to find this local gem that certainly doesn’t receive the praise and notoriety it deserves. Taken from their website, the school/library serve as a resource to «preserve, promote, and celebrate the rich history and culture of African Americans in Houston, the surrounding region, and the African Diaspora». We came here initially to view the exhibit on Independence Heights(another local black community) not really knowing anything about the school and were surprised by what we found! The first floor has permanent exhibits about the original town which flourished in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Here you’ll learn about prominent citizens and how they impacted the city of Houston. There is also a classroom designed to look like one of the original classrooms. On the second floor there’s a library with reference materials(not for check out) and tables and chairs where you can sit and read or research. Would highly recommend visiting and exploring the surrounding streets!
