St Thomas the Apostle Episcopal Church

My parents are regular attenders at this church and I’ve only been a few times with them. But from what I’ve observed and heard from my parents, it seems to be a welcoming, loving church. I enjoyed the rector’s Christmas Eve 2015 message as well as my parent’s confirmation service. This is a very pretty church as well.

More detail from my previous review, this is a medium sized Episcopal church serving the NASA-​JSC area. There are two services every Sunday (8a and 10:30) with Sunday School (adult and children) in between. 8a is Book of Common Prayer Rite I, 10:30 is Rite II (with choir).
When you walk in Brumley Hall, there is an immediate greeters table to welcome you, provide a nametag, and answer any questions you might have. Before the service, there are always pockets of folks catching up over coffee and doughnuts and a number of photos of the first fifty years of the church which began in 1965.
The services are traditional Episcopal per the BCP, the Rite of Communion is open to any and all who feel called. A full order of worship is provided as you enter the sanctuary.
There are a number of ministries within the parish, including the Nearly New Shop, monthly trips to the Dunn Center downtown to service the homeless, and Habitat for Humanity to name just a few. There are bible study groups (Sunday and weekday), Wednesday healing services, full Sunday School, etc. Social groups include a Holy Smokers men’s cooking, BLAST women’s Dutch treat dinner group, and activities for the retired parishioners.
The Episcopal Youth Community (EYC) is a huge strength of the church. Weekly activities of bible study, inreach and outreach service, and fun to include a lot of service to the worship and the community. Annual mission trips, regular Sunday activities, etc. There are many youth who participate without their parents attending regularly, this ministry is so popular.
Ministries for worship include Lay Eucharist Ministers, Lay Readers, Greeters, Altar Guild, Acolytes, Choir, Vergers, Ushers and many, many more.
In August 2015, St. Thomas called a new Rector that has brought a much needed injection of enthusiasm and more contemporary approaches. Mike brings a bit more practical sermon to the congregation that is easy to find applicability in day to day relations with God, our society and world. He’s very much a leader by doing, particularly when it comes to serving the local and larger community. Sunday worship definitely has a new vibe and attendance at both services is up.
