Soul To Soul Cafe

After reading the reviews I’d thought I’d give this place a try. Went during the lunch special (great price 8.99) & ordered oxtails w/​rice n beans, Mac n cheese, sweet potatoes, and greens. Also, cornbread. Nothing on my plate met my expectations. Cornbread was very dry & stiff, greens & sweet potatoes were hard. Mac n cheese was very bland. The oxtails were tender and seasoned well but the rice n beans were undercooked. I may have went on a bad day, but the food was very disappointing. Nothing like the «soul food» I imagined.

a lot of open and space seating and they even have a stage where it looks like they have a band that plays. The food is served cafeteria style. The service was awesome everybody was friendly they greated me from the beginning to the end. they just have all around great customer service. I got the regular plate it was oxtails, macaroni and cheese, and sweet potatoes with cornbread. The oxtails had a lot of fat on them with very little meaton it the gravy seemed like a powder pouch mix, the mac and cheese was very powdery and just not not cheesy at all and the oasta was overcooked, the sweet potatoes were little discolored as well like the canned sweet potatoes and hardly any seasoning on them in them (no cinnamon, butter, sugar, vanilla, nutmeg). the plate for about $ 11 but not worth it. The customer service again was amazing everyone was really sweet, they just need to allow a cook to prepare their food vs buying everything store-​bought ready just heat and serve meals.

Huge plates of really good food. They have a band on Friday, sat and Sunday. Spoken word poetry on Friday nights. 7 – 9. Pretty cool !

I am NOT going back EVER again. And that totally sucks. I truly enjoyed the beef, p rice and gravy the last time I was there. Even with the whole contaminated zone in the bathroom in my previous review, I still decided to come back. When I got there today my hubby could smell the bathroom inside the dining area. I saw a roach on a table we were gonna sit at. I still was gonna stay because I wanted that rice and gravy. There is a table right next to the buffet line. There was ANOTHER roach on THIS table. That pushed me over the edge. I understand one incident and that never happening again, but the very next time I come you have rodents!!! Nothing tastes this good. I WON’T be back! Don’t go. I’m warning you.

Once this place gains popularity, I think the food quality will improve. It’s cafeteria style, not ‘order from the menu’ style restaurant.
We stopped in for a late dinner and the place was pretty empty. The ox tails were a bit tough, not fall off the bone tender like they should be. The jerk chicken was pretty good but the sweet potatoes were the best part of the whole meal!

It was soul food. Just not great soul food. However on the west side of town we are in a soul food desert so to speak. I would go back, just not often.

I’ve lived in the Energy Corridor for quite a while and to say there’s a lack of soul food options is an understatement. Usually I’ll have to make the trek to Mikkis once a month for some good ox tails but I decided to branch out. I came in for lunch and got the 1 meat 3 sides plate which included oxtails, rice, Mac& cheese and green beans. All orders also come with a side of cornbread. The meal was pretty good however the oxtails weren’t as tender as I’d like they should probably allow them to simmer for a longer time. Oxtails should fall off of the bone and these didn’t. My 3 sides were very good but the Mac had this weird powdery flavor to it that I didn’t love. The customer service was exceptional and I’ll be returning on that alone. I just won’t be getting oxtails next time.

Great customer service and the food had good flavor and spices. I enjoyed my plate. I had bbq chicken, curry chicken w/​mac n’ cheese, collard greens and candy yams.

Wow this place is fantastic! If you are on a diet, don’t go here. But if you don’t care about calories, and you love good, home cooked southern food, search no further! Food is fabulous, atmosphere is great, staff is friendly. I will definitely be frequenting this establishment!

Horrible service! Went there for the first time for some fish an entire hour before closing and they refused to cook anymore stating the kitchen had been cleaned? All they had left was two pieces of small shriveled up old pieces of fish that they were more than happy to sell me at full price. The food looked old and the service was almost like I was bargaining for service?.. walked out! When are these small restaurants going to understand the best marketing is through word of mouth and first time customers turn into loyal consistent customers and they wonder why they never last long?

Great place! Delicious food and desserts. Great family owned business. Please try it out if your in the area

The ambiance is good. Food is good. All they are missing is the alcohol. BYOB could be very beneficial though. Iys good to have a soul food spot in West Houston. Will definitely be back
