Man I ate everything off the streets in Karachi growing up. I’ve never found a Kabab roll, chicken tikka, or bun Kabab that can compare, but chaat? Shiv can rival any chaathouse in Karachi(and you won’t get an upset stomach).

Have been going to this restaurant for past 12 years never had a complaint till today. Apparently they have new owners and the service is terrible. Lady in front has too much attitude and the food quality has dropped. The pav bhaji didnt taste good at all and the masala dosa was hard. I use to recommend this place to all of my family and friends but not anymore. Worst customer service in all of houston.

This is the best place for chaats and dosas. This is the only best restaurant for chaat in Houston compare to others. Best are plain dosa, sev puri, samosa chaat and bhel puri.

Authentic Indian food that is too authentic where I had no idea what I was eating haha… they should put a description beside each item or at least a picture, you get a whiff of curry once you step into this place, everything tastes pretty good, some sour, some sweet, some spicy so a little bit of everything all for $ 16 which was dirt cheap I’d come but I need to research more before I order

This place has good food– all of the dishes that I tried were great. We had a combo which comes with masala dosa, idli, vada, sambar and chutney and a sweet — everything was good. They had special food for people who were fasting on that particular day. Among those we tried the sabudana vada(made of tapioca. sabudana is a hindi word for tapioca) and sabudana khichdi — both were tasty.

100% worth the visit to Hillcroft for authentic Indian food under $ 10! The venue is pretty modest. Not the best lighting aside from the natural lighting, and the décor could be… well, more existent. Don’t expect a fancy date night setup– this place is for grubbing. That being said, it’s spacious with a variety of table sizes for groups, couples, etc, and there’s plenty of room so you don’t knock over a plate when you order at the counter. Reasonably clean as well. If the venue is a B, the food was definitely a solid A. As a shameless lover of red meat, I almost forgot this was a vegetarian restaurant. All of the food came out piping hot in a timely fashion. The chaat was flavorful with a nice sweet tone, and a good portion for an appetizer. I was absolutely in love with my mango puri, however. The potatoes had perfect pillowy texture and a nice kick of spice, and although the mango sauce was almost too sweet, it still complemented the starch well and brought everything together perfectly. The puri was PUR-FECT. Did I mention you should wash down your meal with the richest, most natural-tasting mango lassi you’ve ever tasted? Because you should.

5 star restaurant Customer service –Awesome Hospitality– Very very Good Accuracy — right on point Maintenance– Store was very clean and very welcoming Product quality– To die for most restaurants have product made and they just sell it when someone orders it and it’s very common in Desi food since it takes very long to cook but the freshness and the quality of food reminded me of my childhood days in Tamil Nadu — the idlis Service — The ladies were very nice, attentive and very very customer orientated. . One of the best vegetarian restaurants in Houston And I don’t do vegetarian a lot but when I do I want to make sure that it reminds me of Motherland abd it did Their pharali, chevdo, ladu reminds you of Gujrat … Try it you won’t be disappointed …

Good food, from what I can tell. I’m not a big veg eater but I really do like the simple foods here. And can’t beat the prices!

Great Papdi chaat and dahi puri. Don’t get the samosa chat unless you love cloves and bagged garam masala. Stick to the chaat or even the dosas.

No frills Indian Vegetarian restaurant. Their Idly sambar and upma are terrific. Everything is almost perfect. If u order a dosa, make sure you eat it fast so that it does not dry up. Fast food restaurant combo experience. Place can be pretty busy most of the times.

This place is great if you’re looking for a cheap and quick bite to eat. This is not the place if you’re looking for outstanding service or a super nice place. The interior/atmosphere is nothing to rave about, standard chairs and tables. It wasn’t dirty but it wasn’t particularly clean either. There was food dropped on the ground and the tables that were supposed to be clean still had stains/food. Now the food — it was tasty, good quantity for the price, but on the spicier side. Their menu has all the classic chaat items and some more creative things. For example, the pav bhaji dosa was unique and very delicious.

Indian food is one of my least eaten cuisines primarily because I have no idea what to order. Fortunately, my sister is pretty vetted with Indian thanks to her food adventures with her coworker, and she suggested we try Shiv Sagar for dinner. Note: Shiv Sagar is vegetarian-only, but with the amount of food they serve you, you won’t be missing meat all that much. When you walk in, you stand in line and order at the cashier. You tell them which table you’ll be sitting at(i.e. whichever one is free), and you pick up your food when they call out your number. Pick up a water pitcher and cup(s) along with your silverware(if desired; this is Indian food, after all); it’s meant to be kept at your table. My sister ordered for us bhelpuri, potato dosa, and 2 thalis. With the thali, you can pick flat or puffy roti — we got both, but personally, I prefer flat since it’s easier to tear and sop up all the delicious curries. Side note: food here is pretty inexpensive, so order up! Just be wary to not order too much, though. Bhelpuri is street food, and it’s really tasty! Puffy rice with a salty-sweet sauce; it’s definitely unique and worth sharing. The dosa was nice and crisp with a tasty potato filling, and the thali was an overwhelming experience that offered plenty of different flavors to keep the meal far from monotonous. Though I can probably count the number of times I’ve eaten Indian with my hands, Shiv Sagar was great, and I’m glad my family decided to go. Definitely worth going back!

All for previously written reviews are bang on point. Food is all vegetarian, delicious. Reasonable prices. No table service as such it’s all self serve. They are okayish helpful behind the counter. Paneer pakoras are yumm. So is the Dahi puri Chaat and the aloo Chaat. Chola bhatura is yummehhhh. Masala dal vada is unbeatable. Samosa, Bhajiya, idli-wada and Dosa are regular good. Some food items are on the oily side yet better than most other places in hilcroft like Shri balaji bhavan or bombay sweets. Parking space is a big perk. Cleanliness is alright. Doubtful at times. I don’t drink their tap water EVER!

Paneer pakora = delicious Special combo(masala dosa, idli vada, sweet) = delicious Dahi puri = unique and tangy! Chickpeas, yogurt, chopped onions, crispy shell. Chai = boring. Prices = reasonable Service = self service, but they’re friendly behind the counter.

I love meat. Steak tartare, fish, seafood, you name it. Yet, when I eat at Shiv Sagar, I don’t miss the meat. This is the best vegetarian Indian fast food in town! My favorites are the dahi puri and dal fry chapati. Thali is also really good. I stumbled on this place years ago when I was stranded at discount tire a block away while car was getting new tires. And… I’ve been going there since. Make sure you take pictures of the food if you like it; their menu does not describe anything, just lists the name of the dish.(If you aren’t Indian it could be foreign to you) Great food and prices.

Shiv Sagar is my new favorite South Indian brunchery. I like SBB, but I like S squared a bit more. Perhaps it’s the Bollywood(on the TV) angle. There’s also new floor tile. You’re best off finding a seat facing most of the restaurant, so if you’re lucky, that means a table along the wall with a chair facing in. Oh, and facing the TV, if at all possible. Basically, the reason you’re here and not at Shri Balaji Bhavan(SBB) is for the livelier setting, TV, and more food and drink options. The food can be hit or slightly off target compared to SBB. Now for the ordering and food. Take note of your table number, leave a person/table holder at the table(or not if you’re in a «caution to the wind» kind of mood) and head to the counter. I’m keen on their Idli, Sada Dosa, and Sambar. They have quite an array of chaat, including around fifteen varieties of Dosas. Back to the spectacle and your choice of seating location, this is a great place to people watch. And synchronized dancing on TV watch. While eating. And catching up with your friends.

Oh Shiv Sagar! Thank you for approve to me that real Indian Food does taste spicy. Me and my friend came here for lunch on Sunday, it was super crowded but food serving speed is flashing fast. Being amazed by cheap price, we two naïve eastern asian kids decided to order 6 dishes but cashier was very nice and told us to aware the quantity. We end up ordering Samosa, Masala Dosa, Thali, Chole Batura. And that was lot of food! Everyone in the restaurant was staring at us Bahaha. Everything taste full of flavor and smell so good, I finally got spicy feel in my mouth after visiting so many Americanized Indian Restaurant in town. I especially enjoy Chole Batura’s bread(sorry I don’t know what do they actually called), it’s fluffy and buttery, good with any sauce or even just eat it by itself. Their decoration is simple, I don’t have any complain within their offering low price decent food.

Your best bet in Houston when looking for vegetarian food is usually at an Indian restaurant on Hillcroft. Even though this vegetarian/vegan restaurant has been around for many, many, years it was my first time eating here. I’d give it 2.5 stars. This restaurant is setup café style. You seat yourself, get your own water and utensils, order at the front and pickup your food when it’s ready. There’s a couple people behind the counter who take your order, collect your money, and call your table number. We ordered the papdi chaat, uthapam, mysore masala dosa, dahi puri, and another dosa that had various veggies in it(cabbage, peas, potatoes etc.). I loved the chaat, so so good. Everything else was just okay. The uthapam became chewy once it cooled down. Usually it’s supposed to stay crunchy. Food is pretty oily and spicy. Can’t really decipher flavors except in the papdi chaat. I didn’t try anything else except the South Indian food, so can’t vouch for that. You won’t leave hungry. Portions are insanely humongous. You seriously get your money’s worth. The uthapum came on a pizza tray! I haven’t seen food priced like this since I was a little kid. Nothing costs more than $ 6.00.
