While the server was attentive and provided a warm welcome, and the restaurant was clean if modest, the food was very authentic to Venezuela but not of the caliber I was expecting and had hoped for. The arepa was good and the tequenos palatable. However, the empanada and pastelito were a step below even those provided by street vendors in Maracaibo. In addition, I was taken aback when the tortilla chips and dip placed on the table upon arrival were Mexican, not even remotely like the fried platano chips and chimichurri sauce from my homeland. Although the experience is much the same, for much better selections and cuisine, take the extra time and drive to Dona Maria’s in Humble.

I can’t tell you how happy I am to have discovered this place. After my first arepas experience in NYC, I had been craving them. My first trip to this food truck was exciting =) My friend wasn’t too sure exactly where it was or if it was even there still, so imagine my giddiness to see it emerge from the Mobile gas station! I walked up, and looked at the menu. At this point, I wished I paid much more attention in Spanish class. Thankfully, the lady was very helpful. I ordered 1 chicken and cheese arepas, and another carne asada one. In retrospect, order 1. I asked the lady if 1 is enough, but she lied and said no. So I ordered 2. Needless to say, I ate about ¼ of 1 and 1⁄3 of another back at the office. However, I heated it up in a pan the next day to get the outside all crispy again, and had the leftovers for lunch with my fiancé. YUM. Anyhow, back to the truck. Today I went back for my 2nd visit. Called ahead to order since the lady was nice enough last time to suggest this so I don’t need to wait. I told the guy that answered the phone I think it was carne asada that I really liked last time. Told him there were some tomato and onions in it. He said«Oh I think you mean fajita beef» and I said«ok sure, I don’t really remember» =( It was not fajita beef that I got last time. It was most definitely carne asada. Oh well, this was pretty good too. I also got tequenos. mmmm Downside of this place? The price. Arepas are $ 4, and my total today was $ 12, so I assume the tequenos were $ 8. Which is a little ridic.
