Stopped in here for a quick bite. Walking in, the bells attached to the door jingled to alert staff. The room was filled with single diners, couples and families. A couple of tables were dirty but quickly cleaned after the waitress heard the bells and greeted us. I felt as though I had just walked into a taqueria in Mexico. There were about 8 tables total, 2 of which sat 6. It was a long room. The walls were decorated and enshrined with some of the things I would find in my grandmother’s kitchen with tones of H-town as home. I noticed there was a Marvin Zindler Blue Ribbon Award hanging proudly. Encased garlic cloves attached above the kitchen with some employees inside, tending to large pots but never noisy. We sat down and reviewed the menu. India Maria(a popular mexican old-school comedy movie) was on t.v. and the jukebox played intermittently but didn’t interfere with our conversation. There were typical and also specialty dishes that are homage to southern Michoacan, Mexico. One that caught my eye but probably had more of a tex-mex influence was the Torta de Pescado. Once I saw that the tortillas were hechó a mano, I new tacos right now couldn’t be beat. I’m not a meat eater, so I got the Nopales taco and added refried beans on flour and a shrimp taco with added avacado, cilantro & onions. The nopales were seasoned in a tomato-like base but wasn’t too heavy or greasy. The beans were also mashed to the right consistency, complimenting the nopales and not too salty. I had the shrimp taco on corn and regretted it after eating the nopales taco on flour(although, I feel like the flour tortilla could have been hand-rolled longer to make them thinner and a little larger, it wasn’t over floured like Laredo Taqueria’s tortillas sometimes can be). The corn tortilla was how my mom would have cooked it, pan-fried in light oil. It appeared that they were advertising Guerrero brand tortillas which are thick so I only ate one(it was doubled up and could have been made into 2). The shrimp was piled high but they used the tiny baby shrimp which may not be your thing. I enjoyed both tacos, don’t get me started about the salsa. My fave was the dark-red smokey one that they bring you with your meal in plastic bottles(which I don’t always like) but this salsa was irresistible. My partner got the beef fajita tacos which he says were tender, juicy and tasty. The service was quick, friendly and efficient. The waitress was very nice and came by several times to check on us even though she was very busy. The prices were right, as well. I’m sure I will be back. We added a pack of pina empanadas to go, which I haven’t tried yet, but I have a feeling they won’t disappoint!

Ordered fajitas a la mexicana($ 6.95) with domestic michelada($ 4) for lunch on my day off from work. The fajitas were well seasoned and but the rice was on the greasier side. The homemade tortilla was hot off the press & delicious! The service was prompt and courteous. The lady behind the counter was friendly and spoke perfect English. She recognized that it was my first time here and wish me to come back again! Overall, it was a tasty, homey meal!

Sopes are great; seafood cocktail is OK, better when you add a little lime, salt and Tabasco, but then again I am not the cook; Chili Relleno was decent, though sauce was watery, the saving grace was the homemade tortillas! Noisy jukebox will kick-in ‘sin aviso’, and all else is pretty typical of a local homestyle joint. Not great and not the worse. ‘Ni modo’.

Nothing special but just down to earth, cheap and fast Mexican food that has no frills but good taste. Service was meh unfortunately. One server barely spoke Spanish and the owner barely spoke English! Very authentic food and only place in Houston so far where I’ve found a pambazo!

I pulled up to this shopping center looking for Tortas el Angel, but as I was hopping out of my car I saw Refresqueria Michuacan 2 doors down. Hmmmm. could it be? Is this a possible FTR? I pulled out my Blackberry and immediately looked it up and to my surprise no reviews. I decided to go for the FTR. The restaurant is small but it was busy. I decided to do a lunch combo plate with a fajita taco on a homemade corn tortilla and a chicharron gordita served with rice and refried beans. The beef fajita was diced up crispy on the outside and surprisingly juicy and tender on the inside. The chicharron gordita was really good. Gorditas are a guilty pleasure of mine, try to picture a fat corn tortilla split, then stuffed with refried beans, cheese, and what ever else you want. Then the gordita is thrown back on the skillet. I chose to have my gordita stuffed with chicharron, fried pork skin then cooked up in a salsa verde. It was delicious. The rice and beans were above average. I typically take a bite or two from the rice and beans, you know when your eating fried pork skin you have to cut somewhere. I washed my combo platter down with an agua de tamarindo. It tasted like it might have been a fresh batch, typically that would be good in my opinion the ingredients didn’t have enough time to come together. This was a quick lunch for under $ 10 and that included a agua fresca. That is solid in my book, so if I’m in the mood for a gordita I will be back.
