Terrific bakery with all the wonderful Mexican baked goods you look for. We’ve had piedras(rocks), cemitas de nuez(flat bread with pecans), cuernos de queso(croissants with sweet cheese), empanadas de calabaza(pumpkin empanadas), manos(hands with pineapple, coconut, and raisins)… all are fabulous. Buttery, flavorful, tasty. All I can say is — it’s worth the trip.

The empanadas de cajeta at La Ojarasca are to die for! My parents used to bring us here after church as children, and I still remember how good their pan dulce was. Until last weekend, I hadn’t been back since my childhood, but their bread did not disappoint! It was as good, if not better, than I remembered! This panadería is about 17 miles away from where I live, but it’s well worth the trip. And this is coming from the granddaughter of panadero(baker)!

Try the conchas, they will not dissapoint! I recall eating like a dozen ojarasca cookies and not realizing how many had gone by, they were that good, very buttery texture. I can honestly say this is the true to nature ‘ma & pa” store, very homely feel to it!

It is no exaggeration to say that reviewing this bakery was the impetus for my joining Unilocal. As a connoisseur of bread and bakeries, I can say that La Ojarasca quite simply makes the best mexican bread I’ve ever had anywhere, including Mexico. In fact, they may make the best sweet bread period. Their conchas are soft and moist, their semita de nuez’s are nutty and never dry. Their empanadas are always golden brown and the filling is never too sweet. Their croissants are flakey and buttery without being greasy. Try one of their biscuits; take it home, cut it in half and toast it with some butter and jelly. Lactose intolerant? Just ask them for the bread«sin leche» and they’ll show you some great options. Say what you will about El Bolillo(also good) or anyone else, but no one’s as good as La Ojarasca. They’ve been around for over 40 years and they’ve got the bread thing down. I’ve been going here since I was three years old and 22 years later, I can say that I’ve never caught them on an off day. I’ve never been disappointed. The other aspect about this bakery is that it’s absurdly cheap. One can go in and leave with two bags of bread and honestly spend less than $ 6. But don’t come on Sunday morning because there is a long line of after church-ers.
