Even though their hours are 9am to 6pm, don’t show up until 9:30am or so because they are late to show up and open most every day. Perhaps it is a cultural thing? I’m not sure. When they do make it to work, they typically do a good job & for a $ 6 haircut, I guess that I’m willing to deal with their tardiness.

Continue to visit Mike’s about every 3 weeks. Sometimes a little difficult communicating exactly what you want and having them follow through. But again for $ 6, the best value around. Rarely does my butt hit the seat of the waiting area. I could come in once a week and cumulatively it would be more time and cost effective than one trip to a chain salon. I don’t miss the scalp massage and hard sell on a $ 30 bottle of shampoo… but wait… where’s Mike?

I got a descent job for a good price. I was looking for a simple and clean place that they don’t make me sick with bunch of nonsense luxury stuff and words, and I found the one.

You will not find a better haircut for $ 6. Period. I walked in and noticed that it was a cash only establishment, but the ladies were quick to point out that the corner store a few storefronts down had an ATM. I was a little hesitant to pay the ATM fee before I realized that a haircut plus tip would still come out to less than $ 10; you just can’t beat that! Came in about an hour before closing and there was no wait. I heard them speaking in Spanish as I walked through the door, and for a split second I thought that this was the time to break out the Spanish skills I learned during spring break in Puerto Rico before realizing how not-so-great those skills were. No worries, though; the service was friendly, quick, and fluent in English too. I went in looking to get a 0 taper and got a satisfactory cut and with good blending. My only grip is that the lady that cut my hair didn’t line me up with a straight razor and did it rather quickly; a few quick passes with clippers and she was done. It definitely wasn’t the cleanest line I’ve ever gotten, but I can’t say that it was the worst. Don’t come here expecting the best fade in Houston, but it was a decent cut at a great price that kept me satisfied.

I don’t care about a fancy, clean salon. I don’t care that the store next door has bars in front of its windows and doors. I don’t care if the person cutting my hair speaks to me or not. I don’t care if the majority of the people who roll through the place don’t speak the same language I speak. I judge a barber shop on the quality of haircut in relation to its price. Based on this criteria, Mike’s Barber Shop is becoming my go-to barber shop. I’ve had two different ladies cut my hair and they were both friendly(not grumpy; sometimes you get those ladies who hate what they do and they bring you down as well) and give a very thorough hair cut. After getting my haircut at Mike’s, I go back home, check myself out in the mirror, and tell myself, «dude, you’re a f-ing stud». That’s how I need to feel after my haircut. Even better, it only costs me $ 6. So now I get a haircut once every two weeks for $ 14 instead of once every 5 weeks for $ 18. That easily warrants a 5-star rating.

They give a decent haircut(let’s face it, you can’t really complain for $ 6) but they NEVER open on time. I will show up at 9 am(to get trimmed before work) the first barber won’t show up until almost 9:15, and they will jack around for another 10 min., so effectively they’re not open until 9:30. It is an unfortunate routine. The quality of their work is ok though.
