incredible value on the lunch special. wish i tried this place out on day one of my most recent visit to Houston, as two days in a row would have easily become three, four, five, etc… the food is fresh and the service is solid too. easily the best Thai i’ve had in years, and I’ve eaten at well over 100 Thai restaurants across the country. next time in town I’ll definitely be back

My wallet was stolen by the staff here. The manager speaks broken English and the bus boys all laughed at me as they probably divided up the $ 100 that was in there. I came back in about 15 minutes after I left it at the table on accident and it was gone. Worst part? Their camera system is so shitty and out of compliance that the footage they did have didn’t cover my table. I hope you sleezy bastards go out of business. I will never bring a client here again, even at their request.

The food is delicious. Service is quite good too. Overall good value. We ordered coconut soup with tofu, Pad Kee Mao with Shrimp and Mango Tree Volcano with Squid. The soup had a rich coconut taste and both dishes were delicious.

Delish! I was craving Thai today and this has definitely hit the spot. I ordered the bamboo basil with beef. The portion size of the entrée is just right. The lunch entrees come with a small salad, an eggroll, and the soup of the day.(Today’s was Miso soup). I arrived a little before noon and it was already packed. I found a seat at the bar and nestled in. Considering it was very busy, the staff seemed to get to each customer in a timely fashion and I noticed the food being brought out quickly as well. I would say I waited about 5 min before my order was taken. Which was okay being that everyone got there at the same time. I will be a return customer from now on.

Came here for lunch. The food was good… not great… but good. I got the drunken macaroni with beef and although it was tasty, it could have used more veggies. It was rather bland. The service here had always been subpar. Takes forever to get your check, especially during peak lunch times. Forget about a drink refill. On top of that, the tables are packed in like a can of worms and it gets very loud.

Updated… it’s got a different owner now. Same drill — You get a little salad, soup, and rotating appetizer(like egg roll or dumpling) with your lunch. It’s awesome too that you get this practically the moment you sit down. I think the new owner’s curry recipe, at least Green curry that I had was out of this world! So much better than the recipe by the old restaurant(called«Bangkok Chef»). Everything else is pretty much the same. I loved my meal and will be back. Quick and easy lunch downtown. About $ 11 for a nice sized entrée and the little plate they bring to start. Side note — there is a back entrance from the tunnels through the Commerce Tower Building.

This is probably one of the better Thai restaurants walking distance in downtown to grab lunch. The lunch menu give you soup, salad and appetizer along with your entrée ordered. Sizeable portion of food for what you pay. I’ve tried the Pad Kee Mao, and it’s pretty good. A little on the sweeter side. Only complaints about this restaurant is when they’re busy they tend to forget/ignore things. I’ve had an incident where we didn’t get our soup/salad/appetizer, and had to ask them for it. I’ve also tried to take out once before, and I will never do it again. The lady ignored me for a solid good 10 minutes while she was getting all the tables bills paid out.

The food is pretty good. Service was slow and it took a considerable amount of time to get the servers attention. The most appalling thing is how filthy the storefront is! Homeless folks urinate on the exterior of the building and management does nothing to combat the foul smell. Please mop outside the entrance!!!

I’m giving this place a 3-star because of the food. I’ve never dine in this place except order take out to go back to my office. I wouldn’t come here if I don’t work close by. This place is right inside downtown, so don’t expect to find any free parking spot except street meter parking. The two times I picked up my food, inside seems stuffy and too overwhelming for me. Keep in mind, again this is right in downtown so lunch time will be packed and rushed. I can imagine that the only people that come here are mostly those that work in downtown. The two dishes I’ve tried here are Tom Yum Soup and Ka Pao Basil. I thought they were pretty good for a typical Thai Restaurant. Today I had Ka Pao basil which I choose chicken. Each dish comes with two vegetable egg rolls, some sour soup, salad(which I don’t like it, well I don’t like to eat salad in general). The meat and vegetable were mixed well and good put together.

I agree with a previous reviewer, that this place had much better tasting food when it was Bangkok Chef. The food now under Mango Thai is not as flavorful as before and bland. Unfortunately, I’ll have to go elsewhere for my Thai fix.

Very unique experience at this restaurant that has a lot going for them. Came in on a Friday for lunch and could not get seated(with our understanding that this restaurant is packed during lunch). Our group ended up setting up our own table while the staff grumbled at us. We sat for 20+ minutes before someone of our group finally decided to get our own menus. It’s the first time I’ve ever been to a restaurant where a server told me that food would take 20−30+ minutes to come out and it was up to us if we wanted to order. We still toughed it out since it was get-together for a co-workers last day. After most of our group got our food the server came to us to tell us that there was a «mix up» in tables and that we needed to give the food back. It also did not help that there was no resolution and the server was only«face-palming», shaking his head, and yelling at us and across the restaurant to the kitchen. The 10 minute haggle finally settled when everyone in our group told the server that we all had the correct dishes. One of our party had to leave early but the server did not care to help her pay for the food and was extremely rude(telling her«everyone needs to pay eventually, just wait». Paying was an adventure in itself but thankfully most of our group had cash. The negative aside, the food was very good. The appetizer(provided with every meal) was refreshing with daily soup, salad, and crispy spring roll. The green curry fried rice was exceptional and flavor packed. The food is honestly the only thing respectable at this place. This is not the first time I’ve been to Mango Tree, even after it changed from Bangkok Chef. In multiple visits, I’ve overlooked the service for the quality of food. This past experience, and all the hostility from the server, will probably keep me from coming back. I can understand that the lunch rush is exhausting but no need for the inexcusable attitude from the server and the staff in general.

Whenever I’m craving Thai food during work, I’ll stop by for lunch. They have lunch specials which include an appetizer(usually a small salad, soup, and egg roll). The options on the lunch specials include curries, noodle dishes(like pad thai, pad see ew), fried rice, and some veggie+protein combos over rice. I have tried their pad thai, pad see ew, and fried rice before and the food and flavors always satisfies my cravings. The portions here are huge and I’m never able to finish my entrée. Their Thai tea is also pretty good but very very sweet. The restaurant gets really crowded during business lunch hours so I would recommend arriving early if you have a big party or are short on time. Overall, good food for a decent price!

This was my second time here for lunch. Despite the lack of ventilation which caused our clothes and hair to reek after our first visit, we came back as the food was good. Unfortunately, this will probably be my last visit in a long while. No food, no matter how affordable and good is worth the screwed up staff who leave a sour taste in our mouths. The complimentary lunch appetizers came almost immediately after we sat down. It all went downhill from then. The waiter who took our order had to be the most unpleasant I’ve experienced during my stay in Houston. He had a bad attitude and was impatient for us to order, acting like he couldn’t wait to walk away. Twenty minutes later, one of my friends noticed that the table behind us which had been seated later had already been served, so we beckoned our waiter over to ask when our meals will be served. He was on his way to another table and waved his hand flippantly toward the kitchen, making an unintelligible noise and continuing on his way without stopping. A few minutes later, he appeared at our table looking slightly contrite and asked if he could have our orders again as ‘they’ did not get our orders the first time. He did not even apologize at all when it was clearly HE who screwed up and somehow lost our orders. We refused to give him our orders again and my friend asked to see his manager. He said his manager was not around. We insisted, so he checked with his coworker who also said the manager was not there. His coworker apologized and said he will take our orders. By then, we had completely lost our appetites and we were also worried about being served food that had spit in it. So we calmly stood up and just walked out. Do not recommend this place at all! The food is decent for the price but there are many good thai restaurants around. This place is a shame to the gracious and warm Thai hospitality that we know so well.

I LOVED this place when it was Bangkok Chef, but the past 2 visits when I have gone and it is Mango Tree Thai Bistro, I have been very dissapointed. The soups are not as tasty and the pad thai is bland. I placed a to go pick up order today, I called in at 11:55, I was told 20 to 25 minutes, I paid at 12:27p.m., I did not get my food until 12:40p.m. No one had any reason for this, no one appologized to me. I paid $ 17 for a lunch meal and small soup. I doubt I will go back. So sad, was the best place downtown…

Tried the pineapple fried rice and it was pretty tasty. Service was slower than usual but was told by colleagues that that was an anomaly. This place does get smoky and that’s pretty much the only con I can think of. I’ll have to come back to try their curry.

location is good, nearby Hotel and transportation stop in downtown. Restaurant service is good, people are polite to me when I walked in. Food tasted good for me, Portion is medium and taste yummy. But it is pricy. Two dishes cost me over 20 bucks(I assume that cost normally around 14 bucks)

When I went to this place it was called bangkok chef. Since then it has rebranded itself as Mango Tree Thai Bistro. It’s nice to have a Thai option in downtown. But for someone who doesn’t live or work in downtown, this place isn’t worth making the drive to and then pay/search for parking. It’s decent thai food, they have all of the basics, but the flavor was just average. The prices were a bit higher since it is in downtown.

Great thai food I get take out from here at least a couple times a week. Food tastes wonderful everytime. Several times I have called in the break time(between 2 and 5) and they have made my order even though they are closed. If something isn’t on the menu they always make it for me. I never have the problem where the order gets lost in translation which was prior to now something I thought had to be accepted if you want good thai. My favorite is vegetarian pad thai with clear noodles.

Stopped for lunch. Red Curry was very good and big portion of fried rice to go along. You also get a small soup, salad and spring roll. I’d go back again because the other items looked really good

Good Thai food in a busy downtown setting. This place caters to the central business district working stiffs, but I found the food to be very flavorful. I had the crab fried rice and requested it spicy. They obliged. I enjoyed.

I came here with two co-workers for lunch a little after 11 and there wasn’t a huge crowd yet. We sat down and they literally brought us our soup(miso), salad, and egg roll right away. It was a nice appetizer to start off with. I ordered the shrimp pad thai because it was my first time here. It wasn’t too bad, not overly sweet like some places and the shrimps were fresh. It’s not the best I’ve had but I would order it again. But, I would definitely try their other dishes too! Overall, their food was decent and food. On the other hand, after we were done eating, we had to get the waiters attention for to go boxes and the check. By this time, the restaurant was pretty busy. It took a good while to get our check and also it took awhile for them to bring back our cards. Some of the waiters were nice and others just did what they had to do. Maybe a more welcoming smile or friendly service would be nice. Another thing, I’m guessing the kitchen is opened so the smoke from the cooking traveled throughout the entire place leaving our clothes smelling greasy. Wasn’t a big fan of going back to work with an unpleasant smell. After all said and done, the food here was decent/good. The service started off friendly and nice and turned into a bit slow and less friendly. I paid $ 12.99 for my shrimp pad thai plus $ 2 tip making it $ 14.99. Thai food is usually pretty pricey so I guess it’s not to bad for being Thai food in downtown. But, if you haven’t tried Thai Spice in the tunnels then I would give it a try! It’s cheaper and you get more options.

Omg,…this place… So I knew we were in for something,…when we walked in and there was hiphop playing,…in a thai restaurant. The bathroom is also located right past an open kitchen view, that was less that pretty. Bathrooms were barely not-gag-able. So the food was non-memorable/somewhat not good. you CAN screw thai up and this place is on the verge of that. Best part of the evening? I got pad thai(for fear of ordering anything more authentic, bc they didn’t look like they were going to do it well) and it came out with crinkle-cut french fry sized pieces of carrots and NO peanuts. So I asked the lady server, for some peanuts because it appears that they forgot to put them on my entrée, and she looked at me, like I was crazy and was like, «Why would we put peanuts on it?» and walked away. … 00 needless to say, our table almost bust out laughing,…was she serious? And namely, if for no other reason, bc it was STATEDINTHEIRMENU. This place is a joke for anyone that has even a remedial understanding of thai food. do not eat here. Also, not easily found by the views on Google Maps and Unilocal.Ask one of the street welcomers where it is, if you don’t listen to my advice and still go here :)

Downtown Thai restaurant, popular with the lunch crowds. Service is generally prompt. No real«must-haves» here, but the offerings seem to be consistent and are decent. Pad Ka Pow w/chicken, Thai basil, bell pepper, string bean and carrot in a chili basil oyster sauce is good. Served at lunch w/salad, soup and steamed jasmine rice for $ 11 plus tax.

The second star is simply because the soup was amazing today. Other than that, my party of four came in for lunch and waited over 35 minutes after ordering for our food to arrive. We had to ask the server on several occasions to check on our order since tables that sat after us were already eating, paying and leaving. As we watched our«server» run around filling Ice Tea we realized he probably had forgotten to put in the order. Unfortunately this was not the case as the food arrived after a 37 minute wait, it cold and dry. Chances are it sat there and nobody bothered to bring it. What’s worse was that the rice was hot on top so clearly they knew and tried to cover it up. Beyond that, the«server» was not only asked several times to check on it but once he figured out that it had been sitting there for so long he began avoiding us. We actually saw him ask someone else to bring our plates, which we’ve already established were cold. I’m fine if you admit a mistake and make us new, warm dishes. Fine. It happens. But to serve us dishes without a hint of warmth, then try to pass it off with fresh rice is unacceptable. We walked out after waiting to see a manager. Wasted my entire lunch break and will not do so again. This place used to be great but the last few times, the staff’s shortcomings are glaring and not worth the effort.

My friend is picky, and even he liked this place. I used to work downtown so I was easily within walking distance to their location there. It was always jam-packed during lunch time, so I would recommend phoning in an order for pick-up, if you don’t have much time to spare. The woman who works there during lunch hours reminded me greatly of the Soup Nazi episode of Seinfeld. She was pretty brusque and pretty much herded people to control the long lines. However, at least she was pretty efficient. During Friday dinner, it’s pretty much the opposite. I picked up take-out from this place a couple Friday nights ago and was pleased to find that with a Check-In on Unilocal, you get a slight discount!(10% off, whenever I went). For lunch, I always get the lunch special with the salad, soup, and egg roll. For dinner, I got the following: Spring rolls to start — pretty standard fare, nothing amazing, though definitely not bad Pad See Ew — my boyfriend liked this, but for some reason some of the spices created a sort of metallic aftertaste for me, so it wasn’t my favorite Tiger Cry — delicious by all standards. It’s not surprising that it’s their house favorite. I’m not too great with spices so it kicked my butt, but I liked each painful and delicious bite. Sweet and Sour King — mmm. I love me that Pineapple and Shrimp combo. This one was actually my favorite. It hits that perfect blend it is named after! All in all, this place is competitive for downtown Thai. I personally prefer it to Nit Noi, which is also downtown. However, I will say that it is definitely pricey for what you get. On a take-out dinner for two, I spent a little over $ 50. However, for a lazy weekend night, it hits the spot, and I’d do it again.

Very good thai in downtown Houston. You know it’s a great place when there is a line to get a table. I always get the pad thai with shrimp with a level 2 spice. They lunch portion comes with a small salad, soup and egg roll which is great to hold you over a few minutes till your lunch arrives. Service is very quick. Only complaint I have is the kitchen is open and exposed to the dining area so it gets very stuffy and. smelly when you dine. You’ll leave smelling like thai food for sure so stay away if you have afternoon meetings or if too just don’t want to smell like curry for the rest of the day. They also have delivery but with a $ 30 minimum.
