Louis Shanks of Houston-Fondren

Horrible customer service and overall experience. We came in here to buy a complete bedroom set and were treated like children (yes we are young but still fully capable to buy the furniture at this store). We ended up buying the same day we came in and had a delivery date set for the day our condo lease started three weeks later. Come to that week, my husband called the store to confirm delivery and the store said they had either forgotten or just didn’t care to tell us but the furniture was not coming on our scheduled delivery date, and wasn’t going to come for at least another 2 to 3 months («but we can’t really estimate it»…bs). I understand furniture gets backordered, but at least keep the customer informed in a timely manner and talk about options with them. If we hadn’t of called, we probably would have been just waiting around for furniture that wasn’t going to show up.
The salesman acted so nonchalant about it all and it made me so mad. Here we are, our mattress is now laying on the ground and our clothes that should be in a dresser are in piles against the wall — and he acted like he wasn’t sorry for not keeping us updated or trying to solve the problem. This was the bedroom furniture for our first home together and we wanted to make it special — and we told the salesman that upfront too. Going here completely ruined our furniture buying experience and I urge others to not go here.
My parents have furnished all of their homes with Louis Shanks furniture and they were appalled at how we were treated. They too, will not shop here ever again.

I spent just under $ 20k there last year on new family room furniture and rug. They have a great selection, great quality, and high prices to go with it. My saleswoman was very helpful… at first… as long as I kept spending. When everything arrived and I lived with it for a few days, I was not happy with the table they suggested. Everything the designer picked out just blended together. I texted her and told her I was not happy with the table and if there was anything that could be done about it. I knew I most likely would not be able to return it, but store credit would have been fine with me. She told me she wanted me to be happy and to come in and we would «work something out». I still needed some pieces to finish out the room and she focused on that. i asked what would be done about the table I didn’t like. She said we would talk about that later. I did not care for the accent pieces that she chose and I left without getting my table return settled. I texted her again a couple of times and NEVER HEARD BACK. I would have been fine with an outright no on the return, but to tell me that something could be worked out with the intention to sell me even more, and then to not even communicate made me realize I no longer wanted to deal with Louis Shanks. I had to hire an outside designer to intervene to help make my family room what I envisioned.

I’m giving it 5 stars based mainly on the quality and quantity of the furnishings they offer. I would deduct a star because I don’t think the sales people were that much friendly like the other reviewers are saying, but the quality of the actual furniture overrides that.
The store is huge and it is a lot of fun to walk through if you are into home-​decorating or just generally like looking at pretty things. I will give the salespeople credit for the fact that they will let you walk around the store and look at things for as long as you want.
I have bought 3 pieces from here over several years. I would say the service was fine, but not really more than any other furniture store would give, in my experience, but maybe that’s because I didn’t spend as much money as some people probably do! They are courteous and do the job, but some of the other reviewers really raved about the sales stuff, so that’s why I’m just giving my experience. They are ok, same as other places.
However, the quality of this store is amazing. As other people have said, the prices range from semi-​affordable to way out there in the stratosphere. The good thing is they have a wide range and sell furniture from lines that only sell in a few places or else you have to go through a designer. Like Hickory Furniture. (I think that’s the name). Also, you can take your own fabric if you want a custom look, which I haven’t done but have inquired about it. So, you have so many options. Not only on the showroom pieces, but other pieces from companies where you can look online at their selection and then order it from Louis Shanks.
So, it has a lot of qualities that other furniture stores just don’t have. And you don’t have to spend a lot of money if maybe you just want a nightstand or end table or lamp or something. If you’re going for bigger pieces, then yes you will but like I said before, there’s a good range in the prices.
It’s worth anyone going over there at least to look around.

It’s a huge store so brace yourself before you go in ! It took me two days to go through all their floor items! Lucky for me, I bought Art & furniture during their 50÷50÷50 sale ! otherwise it would’ve been out of reach maybe. My sales person was Miss Bing, she wasn’t too efficient & made several mistakes on order but said she was a long time employee:) she made up by giving us extra discount. I bought dining table, lamp table & several wall art pieces/​mirror etc. Very good quality furniture & I’m pleased with my purchase ! Will definitely go back .Most of their furniture is designer collections, if you can wait, look for their sales to buy those beautiful pieces cheaper.

Every time I come here am pleasantly surprised. The staff have been superior to other places in allowing you to roam without being a pest.
Specifics are met with a positive suggestion and whether I purchased an item that day or not, a follow-​up phone call occurs. Excellent establishment at this location to purchase «forever» furniture.
Service consistently meets my picky expectations. Delivery folks are prompt and professional. Price equates with quality.

My husband and I LOVE this store! We looked at every furniture store in the area for a bedroom set and kept coming back to Louis Shanks. Classic styles, quality and long lasting pieces is what you will find here. We now have 5 Louis Shanks pieces in our bedroom and are so glad that we made the right choice. The pieces are big, so I do not recommend looking for apt furniture here. We are planning to go back and look for bedroom accessories very soon. The sales people are very helpful and greet you at the front door. We usually know what we are looking for when furniture shopping and usually bypass using a sales person. They will honor past sales and deals, which is great for our end. A+!

Friendly sales staff and quality furniture. We showed up on a Saturday late afternoon and a salesperson was standing at the door greeting us. She took the time to bring us to absolutely every corner of the gigantic store looking at sectional couches. She encouraged us to get comfy and lie down on the couches, which we did. In the end we had two possible contenders but when I got home decided that they just weren’t perfect for the space.
I was really impressed with the wide variety of high quality furniture. The salesperson’s knowledge about the furniture was good, and she was able to rank different manufacturers and let us know which couch was the best deal for our money. I also appreciated that she didn’t always recommend the most expensive option. I loved the mix of modern, traditional, and even unique and unusual pieces. Make sure you visit the second floor!
This is NO Ikea, so don’t go in here looking for a cheap deal. BUT, definitely visit Louis Shanks if you want a high quality piece of furniture that will last for many years.

It’s been a number of years ago, but we were shopping for furniture. We went to Louis Shanks and told the saleswoman that we were looking for oak furniture — including a large entertainment center and dining room furniture. The saleswoman was extremely rude and haughty. She announced that they did not have anything in oak. She then turned her back and walked away. Meanwhile, there were a number of other salespeople standing around with their arms folded. Ended up spending $ 5,000 just on the entertainment center at another well known furniture store in Houston. We also bought dining room furniture, but it did take a bit longer to find exactly what we wanted. To Louis Shanks: hope you’ve tightened up on your hiring policy. You’d think the saleswoman would have said something like, «No, we don’t have entertainment centers in oak. But let me show you a few things that you might like. What sort of finish do you like? Dark or light?» You know, the sort of thing any decent salesperson would say. On account of wanting to make a sale!

If the choice is between this store and Ethan Allen, I’d go here. Better selection and normal unpretentious service. One of the sales people was relentless in his pursuit of helping us find furniture that fit our style without an attitude problem that we encountered in other stores.

Am I really writing the first review of this cavernous warehouse of extremely high-​end furniture?
A while ago, I wrote of Stickley furniture in New York that it was the kind of place where I felt like someone, somewhere, was laughing at me. Louis Shanks is just as fancy but a lot less pompous. Even though I was dressed ridiculously, in some flip flops and a tent-​like t-​shirt and some almost ripped shorts, we were treated well, shown around to exactly the furniture we want, and given good suggestions.
The range of furniture here goes from high end to the stratosphere — just as an example, the King size beds were looking at ranged from $ 1800 (acceptable) to $ 10,000 (which I obviously can’t afford, but enjoyed looking at). They can pair together a high-​end piece with something more modest, have good sales, and do specials off MSRP.
Just a good store.
