Food was OKAY. Ordered crab rangoons, vegetable and pork dumplings, lobster and scallop stir fry. Instead of crab rangoons, we were brought plain cream cheese rangoons — which were tasty, so we did not complain. Vegetable AND pork dumplings were sub-par. The dough was overly thick, the stuffing was bland. The Lobster and scallop stir fry wasn’t bad, but it also wasn’t good. Tea, service, and fortune cookies were decent. We won’t be back.

This is very good American Chinese food. It is by no means authentic, but we all need visit with General Tso once in a while.

Honestly I can say I was disappointed today. I expected so much more from this place than what I experienced. Let’s start with the waiter who took our order with a mouth full of chewing gum just smacking away. He had a hard time juggling our food on his tray I was afraid it would tilt over on me. DONOT I repeat Do Not order the steam dumplings. I mean If you absolutely have to have it get it pan fried, trust me. The fried rice looked gross and the hot and spicy soup was nasty too. On the upside of things I loved the egg drop soup and I must say my husband ordered the curry beef and shrimp and we both loved it. I ordered the Jade Shrimp, it was alright. Parking is free and is located in the back. I don’t plan on coming back.

This is NOT fine Chinese cuisine! Giving two stars for the benefit of the doubt and given that I rarely give low Unilocal reviews. Seriously recommending that the chef to PLSCUTDOWNONTHESUGAR!!! Completely ruined the dishes which otherwise could have been acceptable. Do something about the sauce or put it at the side. Friend said it tasted like McDonald’s sweet bbq sauce that’s for chicken nuggets. Hopefully u’ll work on it if to call it a fine Chinese restaurant. All the best if u do try improving and hoping you do. Believe I’m not the first commenting on the sugar.

Our goto family chinese spot. Its been there for years and has slowly expanded into the entire building. I always get the orange chicken and my mother gets the eggplant with basil chicken on the side. The last time I was there, we had champagne with a candied flower bubbling at the bottom. Very consistent and a nice ambiance.

Would have given this place a 2 or maybe even a 3 because the food is decent if a bit bland, but then I found a small cockroach in my Ho Fan. Kam’s, you’re on my dunzo list.

I’ve gone to Kam on several occasions and every single time without fail their servers ate on point in their food delivery. Everyone is so attentive and polite and are constantly interacting with returning customer. I always feel great when I leave plus there guava candy doesn’t hurt!

We had a small dining experience at Kam Wok’s. The place is not huge but it has a spacey bar area. The atmosphere? Not very intimate, but it’s prolly a good place to get food with friends or family. For the appetizer, we had the vegetable fried dumplings. Nice and crispy but the inside was a little too chewy. It comes with 4 different sauces including a minced jalapeño concoction but I did like the ginger soy sauce it came with the best. I had the Ho Fan with tofu. Thick noodles that were adequately covered in the sauce, and it had enough tofu with it. I thought it was a simple dish but it was filling and good enough to share. The noodles were not chewy at all, so I really liked that. My friend had the red chicken curry. They’ll ask you to rate how you prefer the spice from 1 – 5, with 5 being the spiciest. I said give it a 10!!! Joke. You can choose either fried rice or white rice. The place wasn’t super impressive but I didn’t get a bad experience either. It isn’t the most authentic Chinese restaurant, but it’s easy access if you’re in the area.

After what seemed to be a session at the University of St. Thomas akin to a bad episode of RHOA I decided to walk to Kam’s on probably one of the coldest nights we’ve had in Houston thus far. I was so happy to order my hot & sour soup and I wanted the warmth from my sweet & sour soup to be comforting like the embrace of a loving mother. So to emphasize the effect of all things soothing I ordered the fried rice. My biggest mistake was that when the hostess offered me to sit at the bar, I decided to sit at the stool by the counter by the entrance. Not only did I welcomed uninvited cold air blowing on me directly each time someone came in or left but also I had to sit through the hostess answering the phone and saying something along the lines of, «Thank you for calling Kam’s. All lines are down at the moment. If you would like to place an order, feel free to come-in. Thank you.» *HANGSUP* After the stated time of 15 minutes for my order, I received it and I asked for the chili sauce because I thought it would be a nice addition to my Sweet & Sour sauce which I was hoping would come in a separate container. However, I failed to observe this little detail. When I came home and opened my bag with anticipation to dip my chicken I came to the stark realization that there was NOSWEET&SOURSAUCE for my SWEETANDSOURCHICKEN. I could have tried and called Kam to complain but I decided not to as it would only lead to further disappointment with the girl who would just read her script of the phones being down and hanging up. Sorry, Kam — when I order sweet and sour chicken, I want my sweet and sour sauce. Lesson learned — Never coming here to take food to go unless I inspect like Inspector Gadget.

I don’t understand the horrible reviews at all. Its not the best Chinese food I have ever had, but its a solid choice when I have a craving. I have been here countless times — tried many items(I would venture to say all) and I stick with the same things. Always order heavy off the appetizer menu — and a few of the entrees. My fav apps: Thick wrap veggie and pork dumplings, thin wrap chicken. Imperial rolls(fried spring roll), cream cheese rolls, hot and sour soup, phoenix boat(lettuce wraps.) Entrees: Vietnamese(surprisingly) bo luc lac, honey shrimp(if you’re in a greasy mood) and ho fan noodles(my personal fav.) The dumplings are awesome and come with a variety of sauces; they serve them in the steam pots and create a nice presentation. I like them both steamed and fried, but steamed the best. The fried apps come with an apricot sauce, which is a nice take/change from sweet and sour — i personally love it. They also have a nice garlic chili sauce. I don’t recommend their generals or orange chicken. The chicken quality isn’t there for me. Its smaller pieces and the breading isnt my fav either. The eggplant dish was too much breading and super greasy. They recently renovated and built and awesome bar. They try their hand at a few drinks and have a TV. Its a nice spot to go with a date or alone and watch a game and have some good food. They have a decent wine selection and also have art shows and events there quite often. They have an app/points club and by dining you get points for free items. By signing up you also get emails notifying you of events they host. Staff is friendly, place is cozy — people remember you and make you feel at home.

It’s takes a lot for me to review a restaurant negatively. In fact, it takes a lot for me to care about reviewing a restaurant on Unilocal.Unfortunately for me, I decided to fix my Americanized Chinese food craving with Kams. I ordered their overpriced Gen. Tso chicken from their dinner menu. At $ 10.95, with only the option of white rice or brown rice was a huge let down. Ordering the meal was quick and easy. The server was very nice and attentive as I waited for my to-go order, but the positives end there. My drive home from Kams was maybe 3 minutes, so I know the food’s poor quality wasn’t due to the time in the container. The chicken(if there was any chicken) was covered in a thick chewy layer of batter. Whatever chicken I did spot was very obviously day old or recooked chicken. I couldn’t finish eating it. It was inedible. I really wish The Rice Box Chinese food truck was around the time I had my craving. On a positive note, the 3 fortune cookies I got were fresh and crispy!

Terrible dining experience. I came with a few coworkers on our lunch break so we were on a time crunch. We weren’t notified that our food order was being held until we were done with appetizers. Then, we didn’t receive soup with our lunch specials, and one order was rang up incorrectly. Getting separate bags and checks was also a hassle. The manager was unbothered by our complaints and didn’t offer any solution until our second complaint. After over 1 hour, we left with our(cold) entrees in bagged.

I come to Kams very often. Food is really good and prices too. Also, good portions sizes. A few days ago I ordered to take out and didn’t check the bag, but they messed up the order. I came back and talked to the owner, who apologized and covered the order as a compliment. The few times I actually eat here, I have received good attention from the staff, but most of the time I do take out. Now on, I will just double check my bag before leaving! Big plus: free valet parking.

I have a pretty high standard when it comes to Chinese food. Kam’s was able to deliver. Great flavors, unlike a lot of insipid cooking from restaurants that try to mask it with salt. Two negatives: first, it’s overpriced. Second, parking is very very tricky and limited.

Used to LOVE this restaurant! But it has really changed. In there attempt to polish its appearance they lost their roots. The appetizer rolls are about half the size they used to be, the entrée sizes seem to have shrank. The prices stayed the same. The delicious hot mustard and duck sauce was replaced with mustard and apricot sauce(don’t like). The staff has completely changed. No one to recognize anymore. The waitstaff is constantly changing. We used to know all the staff and they were all there a long time, now it’s new faces all the time. Sat in the bar area once and was choked out by terrible air fresheners. Who put air fresheners in a restaurant? They expanded the bar and seating, but the same small parking lot makes us eat else where many times because there is no where to park. We’ve parked down the street and walked before, but crossing Montrose on foot can be like playing Frogger with own life. I miss the old Kam’s! It used to a great neighborhood spot with exceptional food. I even drive in from Katy to enjoy. But now it’s just so different. The food is good, but atmosphere is not. Even the strange mix of music is unwelcoming. Love ballads and then dance music, very eclectic. I hope they listen to long time customers and realize the old way is what kept people coming back.

I decided to pick up some dinner in the area and settled for Kam’s since I didn’t feel like driving all the way to Chinatown for some Asian food. When I got there to pick up my order, they gave me chicken fried dumplings instead of chicken fried noodles(good thing I asked!). Waited another 10 mins there for the correct order. The guy working in front was apologetic the entire time and was friendly when others came to pickup their orders. What I was surprised to see was how little the to-go portion size was. This noodle was $ 14(including tax), so I was expecting it to be better and more. There was no flavor in the sauce and was really bland. I chugged sriracha sauce all over it. The sauce wasn’t enough to top the noodles. We were disappointed and even had to make something else to eat at home in addition to it. It did come with one little box of rice. This was my second time here; I guess the Americanized-Chinese dishes are better here. I got the general tso’s chicken years before and it wasn’t too bad. They don’t allow for to-go on the happy hr items and their right next to Nippon, don’t miss the parking entrance! With the lackluster food, probably won’t be back anytime soon.

Tonight… Kam’s joined the ranks of Valentino and Adair Kitchen. Great food, horrible, HORRIBLE service or should I say nonexistent service staff. Never again. The service has sucked for years but still we forged forward with excuse after excuse after excuse as to why. Tonight I found out that the food is NOT worth it. I hate this as Kam’s has been a favorite since the 80’s.

Well, it has been a while since we popped in for lunch and boy has our old Kam’s changed. It’s now called Kam’s Wok/Wine/Dine. A little fancier, a little more pricey and a lot more Midtown than Montrose hip. They have added a small room off to the north for more tables. Nice. They have added a lovely bar area where you can actually sit and have a cocktail(yes, they have liquor now along with beer and wine). Nice. They have also upped their prices a couple bucks and reduced the portions. Not nice. But it’s still the same great food and nice wait staff. It’s not the Chinese food you will find on Bellaire. But it’s good solid American/Chinese food. I love the honey shrimp lunch special and the wife still orders the bo luc lac which is actually Vietnamese I think. But still a nice lunch treat. They still have some of my favorite hot and sour soup in town. But don’t get their fried rice. It is not fried rice. It is white rice with some soy tossed on it and a few peas and green onions thrown in. What a big let down for my shrimp dish. Parking can be confusing your first time there. You park in the back and you need to always look twice or three times before pulling in or out as it’s a narrow little alley that runs along the north side of the building. I am glad they have expanded and added the bar area. It gives it a bigger city/museum district feel but hasn’t lost it’s charm.

Foodie friend recommended this place… casual atmosphere… the décor looks a little dated but the restaurant is clean and service was attentive. The food was ok… better than your standard Americanized fast-food Chinese, but it’s still Americanized Chinese and definitely nothing to write home about. In Houston’s bustling ethnic food scene this place is a watered-down restaurant that just isn’t going to garner the kind of love and attention an authentic Asian eatery would.
