Was pretty excited about this place as a site for a romantic dinner, but in the end, although the food was very good, it ended up being too little for too much money. If you like to spend a lot of money and sit in a very nice romantic location then this is the place for you. If you’d like a value for the money you are spending, try someplace else.

Best carrot cake in town! My husband and I have only had the carrot cake and it is warm and beyond moist. The cake is huge so two to three people can split it.

Very Nice, we are here on business staying close bye. At first a little skeptical because there was no wait on a Saturday night. Every other restaurant in the area had a wait. Well lucky for us. Food was spot on. Prime Rib was perfectly cooked and the New York Strip was one of the best we have had. Wait staff efficient and very friendly. Would recommend to anyone in the Westchase area. Would definitely return.

I’ve had a couple of experiences here and both were great. One was a few years ago and the other was recent which is why I am writing this review* I ordered the double cut pork chop with a side of smashed potatoes and a side of mac and cheese The mac and cheese O My G was sooo good and way better than I remember it when I made a single order to go for My cub not long ago* The pork chop was evenly cooked to temperature with an apple cider juice I wasn’t to fond of but was still tasty* I recommend J Alexander’s for lunch on the fly or a nice dinner for two or a group as well*

I love going to this restaurant! Food is delicious and warm when served. Presentation is right and inviting. Menu is filled with a variety of meals appealing to everyone. This is a place I like going to for desert after my meal. Carrot Cake is absolutely fantastic! I always love the French Dip for lunch. Cocktails are probably a 9. We go back for special times and we are never disappointed by the customer service and noise level.

Perfectly seasoned!!! I love this place! Food is always cooked and seasoned well. I usually get the chicken tenders with double Mac n cheese as sides. If ordering Mac n cheese to go make sure you tell them you want bread crumbs on top like they give you if you dine in. Service is always great! Prices are acceptable.

The carrot cake and key lime pie is my very FAVORITE. Discovered it 11 years ago and it’s still delicious. The Thai Kai salad is wonderful. I recommend ordering the salad with light dressing.

The grilled salmon is excellent although the service and mentality is a bit snooty. With so many restaurant choices in Houston, I always wonder why these establishments think they benefit from this impression. Otherwise, it looks just like the long-loved Houston’s.

It use to be called Houston’s. Similar menu and a great place for a nice dinner, or upscale happy hour. $$$ is more like it. Appetizers drinks and dinner will cost you about $ 60-$ 70 per person. Happy hour will be closer to $ 30-$ 40 per person. There isn’t much on the HH food menu, mainly lady drinks. The food is five star quality.

Excellent service; great food; reasonable price. The husband and I started off with the deviled egg appetizer that was good; we loved the sugary candied bacon bits on top of the eggs. Off of the special menu, i had the $ 18 Cajun trout, which came with a huge slab of grilled fish, over a bed of rice pilaf, alongside the Not-Your-Ordinary Mac & Cheese in generous portion. How not ordinary was the mac and cheese? I dont know *shrugs* it just tasted creamy and delicious lol. The meat-loving hubby had a medium-rare Steak Maui, which was fatty meaty juicy good; however, one-third of the steak was not done properly and was still kinda blood-red inside so we had to send it back to the kitchen to cook it up a little bit for the desired doneness. Shortly it came back out perfect, tender and flavorful, and it was so nice of the chef who had refilled the Brussels sprout and cauliflower on the side, free of charge! We had an extra side of smashed potatoes for $ 5, which was delicious and well made from scratch. Both of us had enjoyed the food and service, and surely would come back!

I started going to J. Alexander’s since 4 years ago and unfortunately the quality of the food has decreased. The New York Strip steak I order all the time sadly does not taste as devine as I remembered. I came here this past Valentines Day with my girlfriend and her steak was pretty disappointing as well. I ordered my steak medium rare but it came out closer to medium and was well under seasoned. The lady ordered her steak medium but came out close to well done and was tough as well. I used to enjoy dining here, but it looks like I may have to pay a but more else where to get better quality steak. Although the waitress did not offer any complimentary dessert or any compensation, the manager did himself, which I appreciated very much. I didn’t accept his offer but at least the gesture was kind. I suggest dining here if you want to go as a group for a quick burger bite or drinks to socialize(nice ambience), but I wouldn’t recommend it for the quality of the food.

Service is always fantastic!!! Everything is delicious. Deviled eggs, pork chops and of course not your ordinary Mac and cheese. Yum, yum, yum will definitely come back. And it’s less than 5 mins from my house. Perfect!

Came here for a engagement dinner, and from the moment I walked in, it was amazing. The service is outstanding, and the food was just great. I had the baby back ribs, so good, I ordered it twice. This wasn’t my first time to J.Alexander. Back in 2004, I went to the location in Denver, and never forget those ribs. Unbelievable service, from my waitress, hosts, and management. 5star!!!

We went on a saturday early evening around 5 and were seated immediately. The restaurant is very upscale, dark, and the service was excellent. I like that you can watch the chefs prepare the food since the kitchen is off the dining room and completely open. I ordered the Pierre Burger with bacon added, fries and key lime pie for dessert. Portions were ok. Not a whole lot(considering the price) but not too little. As for the TASTE: Ommmmgggg! The burger was unreal. Juicy, medium, the gooey cheese and onions. Foodgasm for days. It was so delicious that i forgot to take a picture and that never happens. I believe I didnt take a picture because the presentation wasn’t anything special or out of the ordinary. Don’t get me wrong – it looked GREAT but i was pleasantly surprised to find it tasted much better than it looked. It was definitely prime rib and you can’t beat that! Now let’s talk about the key lime pie… O M G I ate it so fast, i didnt have time to think about it. The crust was this combination of graham crackers, nuts and i believed i tasted a little nutmeg and cinnamon and maybe hazelnuts?. The pie was not overwhelmingly«limey» and trust me, i am a key lime pie connoisseur! The prices were high and for two entrees and dessert, our bill was a little over 70 bucks which is A LOT. My friend ordered salmon(very small portion for the price) and chocolate cake for dessert. All in all, it was a nice place and i would visit again.

J. Alexander’s is one of the nicer restaurants in the Westchase area. It’s perfect for a business lunch. Their menu is a little bit pricy(think $ 13 for a hamburger), but the food is delicious. I usually get either one of the burgers or the cypress salad. The service is usually excellent.

We love J Alexander’s! We’ve been several times and had several different dishes which were all phenomenal and cooked to perfection! We usually start off with lemonade and mexico city spinach con queso. This visit he enjoyed salmon and broccoli while I enjoyed steak kabobs and smashed potatoes! Both dishes were very flavorful and fulfilling! The steaks are of great quality and flavor. Thai salad is my fav salad there! Service and ambiance was amazing!

I Have lived in Houston 10 years and J. Alexander’s was my go to restaurant for new clients, birthdays and special events. The second reason I loved this place were the lemon drop martinis which is usually made with Citron, well after the first lemon drop which I had to send back because there was lipstick all over the glass which was clearly not my color, he informs me that they have run out of Citron and was using Kettle 1. My waiter was also a little odd! It was just a bad experience all together. So then at the end the manager said he was taking some off the bill so it went from $ 136 to $ 127 which was just dumb! I would have just paid the original bill! Needless to say that may be my last trip to this place after it being my favorite place for 10 years!

Very good. Prime rib comes a little more rare if asked for medium rare. Rattlesnake pasta mild spicy and a lot of flavor. The Caesar salad is very good.

Had dinner here with a colleague on a Tuesday evening at around 6PM. I was pleased that we were able to be seated right away as they were moderately busy but had tables available. I ordered the steak and fries upon the recommendation of another review on Unilocal, and I substituted the mac & cheese for the fries… The mac & cheese was quite good(I’ve been disappointed with mac & cheese at several other restaurants recently). The steak was a little bit fatty but otherwise had great flavor. While it was a bit pricier than I was hoping for(not sure why I was expecting a steakhouse to be less expensive), I would definitely visit again when in town.

This was my first time dining in and it quite outstanding. Even though we did not plan on eating here, they still sat us in our casual clothes. The food was well prepared and the service was very nice. The atmosphere was beautifully decorated and very low key. The dim lighting sets a very romantic feel but this could also be a very intimate group gathering venue as well. The salmon was perfectly cooked and the sides were also very delicious. The carrot cake, was truly amazing! It was soft and moist and had a wonderful flavor. The only reason I rave about the carrot cake is because — I don’t like carrot cake! It was a very delicious dessert and the melting frosting was out of this world. I hope to be back for the lunch portion soon!

All I can remember from this place that the interior is pretty dimly lit — it was dark even in the middle of a summer daytime in TX. Tried the chicken cobb salad and croquet madame — nothing special for both. Expecting that the chicken on the salad would be hot, but it came as if it just came out of the refrigerator.

I’ve been here a few times before and I can honestly say J. Alexander is NOT bad. I shared a smoked salmon starter which was quite delicious. It had a poached texture; like as if it was poached and then smoked or poached in a liquid that had liquid smoke in it. Nonetheless, good flavor with a nice complementary citrus sauce and croutons. Also had the«steak n fries(New York strip cut).» IMO get this than the«aged New York strip.» Yes, I’m crazy about dry-aging anything also to develop extra umami but I can tell you, the two ‘strips taste the same at J. Alexander. Save the extra bucks towards another glass of wine and call it a night. Not sure why people bash this place so much. I get it, I receive subpar service as well, but at the end of the day, J. Alex is simply a mid-scale casual restaurant with good steaks and a decent overall menu. Come here if you want to enjoy a straight forward steak that isn’t pretentious and doesn’t cost your arm and or leg.

I’ve been here a few times before and I can honestly say J. Alexander is NOT bad. I shared a smoked salmon starter which was quite delicious. This place surprisingly exceeded my expectations. I had very low hopes for this place so I was pleasantly surprised today during lunch. That being said, I have a ton of issues with this establishment. Pros: the rotisserie chicken I got was very flavorful and moist. They also accompany it with«smashed potatoes» that are buttery and delicious as well as a buttery chicken stock to dip your meat in. The portion filled me and was a lot more than I anticipated getting(thigh, breast, leg). The chocolate cake at the end of the meal was also exceedingly good! It was decadent, moist, and warm! Cons: if you have poor eyesight this place probably will upset you. I felt like I was walking into a bat cave! The romantic ambiance can be nice, but at 11:30 am it’s a bit much. Very hard to see the floor. This place is too pricey for what it is. Yes, my chicken was good, but for $ 16 was it 3x as good as a WHOLECOSTCOCHICKEN? Fuck no. Everything on the menu is over priced and my meal was not a sublime enough of a dining experience to where I can justify the cost. My coworker’s salmon was overcooked and the portion was not hearty enough. Finally, my biggest qualm was the service. Over the course of my hour and a half lunch I encountered four different servers. Honestly, I didn’t know who our designated one was. Also, from the minute we sat down we were RUSHED and the restaurant was far from crowded. I felt badgered and one wait staff member came over twice to steal my plate while I was obviously still eating. Their speed and badgering made me feel anxious and upset that I couldn’t have a conversation with my friend without been interrupted. Would I come back? Probably not.

This Houston’s wanna be restaurant is still a good bet for casual yet upscale dining in a very dim, romantic setting. Also good for business dinners with clients. Every food item I’ve tried was excellent and most everything is prepared in house. For entrees, prices range from about $ 15-$ 40, depending on what you order. For any budget minded folks that may stumble in, the classic cheeseburger is a great choice with ground in house juicy beef that comes with fries. The Pierre burger is similar and $ 1 more for cheese onions and dijon sauce, but doesn’t come with tomatoes.

Stopped by for brunch yesterday with some friends. Pros: –The bartender, David, makes an awesome spiked lemonade. –The Croque Madame is ridiculously good. Don’t pass that up if you’re into cheese. Or ham. Or eggs. –They were, conveniently for me, out of orange juice, so my mimosa came with grapefruit juice instead. It was deliciously tart and refreshing. –The patio is really cozy, it’s easy to forget how long you’ve been there when you’re relaxing with a cool breeze, some sun and good company. –Hands down the best fries I’ve ever had. Thin, crunchy, shoelace fries that begged to be finished off. They’re so addicting. I had to be dissuaded from ordering a side just for myself. Try them with their honey mustard, it’s the perfect combination. Small, probably useless side note; they have a special features menu that can change frequently, usually consisting of really tasty, off menu dishes. A couple of years ago I had dinner with my mom here solely because they had a swordfish plate. I can’t even begin to describe how good it was. I will never forget that this is the restaurant that made me fall in love with swordfish. Cons: –Skip the dining area. It’s waaaay too dark. Head on over to the bar or bar booths. If you’re there for dinner, the dining area is nice for a date night. But be wary with any elderly in your party, you might have to bust out the flashlight on your phone so they can see the menu. –Stay away from the Classic Omelette on the brunch menu. It has a minuscule amount of ham and lacks any type of seasoning(except the smallest amount of pepper), so in turn, it’s more than lacking in the flavor category. I could make a better omelette at home, half asleep, hungover, and with week old ingredients. –The Croque Madame, and its fries, must’ve been sent through a shrink ray because it has definitely changed portion sizes since the last time I’d had it. Just glad it didn’t affect the taste of the food. If you haven’t been, I would definitely give J. Alexander’s a try. I saw a bunch of good looking things on their menu. Steaks, ribs, lusciously described salads, chicken sandwiches, burgers, the whole nine yards! There’s something for everyone. Oh! And the restroom is hidden in the back right corner of the restaurant.

This is a place where magic unfolds and all the food fantasies you’ve had come true. I mean seriously. We walked to the door where they have someone waiting on the inside just to open the door and great you. I felt the love. There was no wait and was seated immidiately(although you can make reservations on here). The place was very dim, had a very sexy-romantic vibe to it. Luckily I was with my man(Hey boo). Upon being seated we were given a menu and brought out waters. I ordered the Steak n Fries(sub the fries for Not your ordinaryMac and Cheese)… and let me just skip to the good part, the food was BOMB! I got my steak well done and it was still savory and delcious. But the Mac and Cheese. Good Googly moogly that thang is INCREDIBLE. It’s like nothing you’ve ever tasted before. MUSTTRY. To top off the night I had the key lime pie. This pie had me convinced that they have magical elfs in the back making it. I left both happy & full :) come here if you believe in fairytales, otherwise just pretend.
