This Chinese-European fusion bakery is a gem inside the 99 Ranch Market chains. Makes it truly worth skipping Chinatown completely for your Asian grocery shopping needs. And in fact I’ve found Desir’s goods to often be on par or even better than most of the larger Chinatown bakeries. Certainly the best Asian bakery I’ve been to outside Chinatown, and a good notch above Tous Les Jours and Koryo Bakery at the Super H Mart nearby. What you’re looking for here is… basically everything. They’ve got it all covered, from the traditional Chinese/Taiwanese pastries to the European style stuff, desserts, and a little bit of everything in between. In particular, they make a KILLER cheesecake and possibly the only Portuguese egg tart in the city with the burnt custard skin on top. It’s absolutely delicious, yet no other bakery seems to make this style of egg tart(even Eck Bakery, King Bakery). I’m sure it’s one of their most popular items too since they always seem to be hot and fresh when I’ve visited. Prices are pretty decent at $ 1.25 for most buns that are just slightly smaller than average. But the real value comes in through their discounts on certain items each week. Breads drop to like $ 1 and get snatched up fast. Otherwise you might be able to grab some steals if you come late at night and they clear house with BOGO free deals. I’m not sure if they still do this anymore though. But that just means they keep their breads fresh and without preservatives to maintain high quality. Unlike most bakeries, they don’t wrap anything until closing time, so be sure to finish your breads asap or bag them up before they dry out. HIGHLYRECOMMENDED ===================== * PORTUGUESEEGGTART($ 1.25 or 5 for $ 5.99) /you definitely want the box of 5 combo here, especially if they’re hot. It’s a flaky puff pastry crust that’s similar but thicker than the Hong Kong style at Eck and King Bakery. The custard is slightly sweeter and longer baked, but just as amazingly delicious when eaten fresh. Just comes down to preference. * BLUEBERRYCHEESECAKEBAR($ 2.99) /absurdly cheap for how good this is. There are fresh blueberries embedded inside the cheesecake. * PAPRIKAHOTDOG($ 1.50) /best rendition of the Chinese hot dog bun I’ve come across(and the only one I’ll eat). Paprika is so off the wall, but it works. * CREAMBUTTERBUN($ 1.50) /denser than most butter cream buns and with sesame seeds on top instead of the typical coconut flakes. Crunchy and chewy on the outside, super sweet and rich on the inside. As good as any butter cream bun I’ve had. * CUSTARDBUN($ 1.25) /on par with the best bakeries * MILKBUTTER($ 1.25) /on par with the best bakeries * MEXICANMILKBUTTER($ 1.25) /an eggier milk butter bun with an extra layer of thin/sweet crust on top. RECOMMENDED ============== * CUPCAKE($ 1.50) /sweeter and denser than most sponge cakes(like at Kamalan, Six Ping). * REDBEANBUN($ 1.25) * BOLUO($ 1.25) /best Taiwanese style bo luo I’ve had, tied with IBUN and I/Ping’s. Sweet and not too thin on top. * TAROBUN($ 1.25) /taro is somewhat dry with a bit too much purple food coloring. * YUDANEBLUEBERRY&CHEESE($ 1.50) /I think they reduced the size of the yudane breads. Still good though, super fluffy and airy inside, very unique. * CRANBERRYBREAD($ 2) * PORKSUNGBREAD * FLORALBUN * HAM&CHEESEEGGSANDWICHSANDWICH($ 2.75) /a great Taiwanese style sandwich NOTRECOMMENDED =================== * CHEESECAKE — NEWYORK($ 1.99) /same cheesecake as the blueberry one but more expensive for the size. * BLUEBERRYCHEESEBAR($ 1.50) * REALPINEAPPLESHORTCAKE($ 1.35) * BOLUOBBQPORK($ 1.50) /bizarre texture on the bbq pork filling. * COCONUTBUN($ 1.25) * PEANUTBUN($ 1.25)

Good selection of baked goods. Made fresh daily with specials at the end of the day for buy one get one free. My favorite here is the coconut bread.

I am a sucker for sweets and I will not stop myself simply because this place has non traditional sweets, by american standards. This place is conveniently located inside the ranch 99 market. Perfect for those that dine in the many restaurants located inside. When I first came I was not familiar with any of the pastries, slowly but surely I started trying them. The bread here is very fluffy and I encourage you to try the sweet filled ones! The mexican chocolate bread is one of my favorites as well as the egg custards. I have never tried their cheesecakes but they look so good! These may not be american sweets but they are still delicious and great to try!

After having a mouth-gasm with LA Crawfish My tastebuds were tingling for something sweet. Not a plain Ice-cream cone, brownie, or a cookie but something different so what better than something inside the Oriental 99 store so we stumbled across Desir bakery. I was in heaven! they had so many options of tasty delights, I kept debating on what to try until I made up my decision to try their Forest cake and Mango mousse cake. I cannot tell you which one I Liked because I loved them both! They were so light and tasty, AM I so looking forward to my next trip here!

Super delicious Chinese breads & cakes. They are so sweet & nice — I came to get a Chinese fruit taro cake and asked if they could write happy birthday on it as well — they lady gave me birthday candles and a cake knife as well! Will definitely come back for breads & sweets.

I have been a huge fan of this bakery shop because of its creativity to make a great variety of delicious breads, both sweet and savory, and also because of the BOGO deals in the evening hours! *woots* Besides the breads, the mini angel food cakes rolled with pork sung(dry shredded pork) or red bean & cream are pretty delicious as well. Last but not least, the Napoleon is as good as it gets! Unlike the European Mille-feuille, this Asian style Napoleon does not have the fattening custard at all; it is composed of fluffy sponge cake slices layered with flaky puff pastries & light cream, which seems to have much less calories than the traditional Napoleon puff pastry dessert.

I like the concept of being able to get a tray and pick out the pastries that you want instead of relying on the person at the counter to pick out the not-so-pretty pastries first from the group. Yes, I admit, I judge a book by its cover. But I believe the inside also counts. :) I came here after 7pm on a Saturday and all of the pastries were BOGO! I didn’t realize this because I was so into the huge assortment that I didn’t see the sign posted in the very front. D’oh! Luckily, I eventually figured this out though. I got two of the blueberry cheese pastries and I thought these were just okay. The blueberry filling was amazing and everything I could have ever hoped for but there just wasn’t enough. The bread to filling ratio was so off; it was like 92% bread and 8% filling. I would have been okay with this if the bread had been just a teensy bit sweeter. There wasn’t a general flavor to it without the filling. Along with the blueberry pastry, I also bought four custard puddings(essentially flan) and a mini, individual portion cheesecake. The flan was really good but could have used just a little bit more of the caramel sauce. I could have eaten a hundred of those little buggers. The cheesecake was delicious, even after sitting in my fridge for three days! It was fluffy and decadent. I wish I had gotten the larger cheesecake instead. Oh well, there will always be a next time. Definitely!
