I love Carter & Cooley, I have been here more times than I can count. If you want a muffuletta sandwich this is the place to go. Theirs is the best I have tried hands down. They always have a special going for a half sandwich and soup. You can’t go wrong with anything on their menu, it is all homemade and great.

Great food! Better Service! The food here is always good and consistent. The price is a little high so I don’t eat here as often as I use to…

I truly do not see what the fuss is or why it would even get a Zagat rating Best Anything! It’s a lesser version of Jason’s Deli… And I could make a better sandwich at home… The food is average to sub-average. The Atmosphere is lacking. Small uncomfortable chairs. Yeah it’s in an old building in the heights… But that is the most exciting thing about the place… The up side… There is a Torchy’s Taco across the street… I can name several other sandwich shops that blow this place out of the water… I wish I could give half a

Carter and Cooley is an old school style delicatessen in the Heights serving sandwiches, soup and other deli foods. The sandwich I ate there recently was extremely tasty but it’s hard for me to get my mind around paying $ 30+ for two sandwiches, two soft drinks and a bag of chips(plus tip). A simple lunch for 2 shouldn’t cost that much. A can of coke alone at Carter and Cooley cost $ 2.11 with tax. I’m not kidding, and that is for one can. I felt ripped off. If you’re going to try Carter and Cooley be forewarned they stop making hot food at least 30 minutes prior to close, and their dining chairs are so rickety you’ll probably have to try 1 or 2 before you find one that won’t wobble and groan under you as you dine like it is about to collapse … vintage isn’t charming when it becomes a safety hazard. I could overlook loose old chairs, an apathetic staff and the dead carnations on the tables however if I wasn’t paying $ 15 per head for one of the cheapest sandwiches(+ chips & drink) on the menu, and it’s a shame. With the quality food, high tin ceilings and antique fixtures, Carter and Cooley has potential to be a unique dining experience. I hope things improve at C & C, Houston needs more locally-owned alternatives to Subway, but I won’t be returning.

I had never been to C&Cooleys, so when i read the reviews bragging on the quality and serving sizes I was drooling by the time I pulled in for lunch. The people were sincere and super friendly. I had stopped in for a Pastrami and Rye and the smells wafting thoughout the place reminded me of home. Imagine my surprise when I got my sandwich on a slice of bread that had a hollow in it(2“hole) that let the pastrami fall thru over my plate when picked up. Although the bread was tasty, it wasn’t structurally up for the job. Its so soft it’s better suited for sopping, than sandwiches. Hmmm. I picked through what I could and foupnd the pastrami sliced with the grain, thus making it tougher that a boot. The meat had a good flavor but who-ever was on the slicer totally blew it. HUGEFAILOVERALL! I was grandly disappointed in the experience. Good flavors but all the meat was pretty in-eatable. BTW, I had taken the sandwich to go, so I didn’t return it. So… for $ 10.50 for a sandwich it was a miserable experience. I hope they have better items than this. I doubt I’ll soon be back

I came to Carter & Cooley for the first time. The reviews are pretty accurate. The place needs a little clean up, but the sandwiches were pretty good. I got the honey ham and brie as suggested. They pack the ham in there pretty good, but the melted brie spills out and causes the bread to be mushy. My boyfriend got the muffaletta and it was very good. Potato salad was spot on. Even though the sandwiches were $ 10.50, we both couldnt finish the other half of our meal. We will definitely come back to try other sandwiches.

Loveeee the honey ham & brie and I’m not a ham person. My friend shared me some of her ruben which id reeeaallly goof although i didnt like the sauerkraut in the sandwich so be sure to request it out if u don’t sauerkraut. I always thought they put Cole slaw in there but maybe not. love their the size of their slices, not too thick or thin… and that red velvet cake was absolutely divine! We went during the white linen night event so it was packed! Despite the rush and amount of ppl, they were nice… well at least to me anyway.

Staff was very friendly, but the food not too fresh. I ordered the days special… ½ sandwich, turkey and Swiss, with a cup of vegetable beef. The sandwich was just okay, tasted like one I could make myself. The soup was disappointing. I wondered if it came out of a can. Not fresh enough for well.

Surprisingly good! Located across Torchy’s, this is the authentic deli New York style kind of like Papa Geno’s is to cheesesteaks. I got the corned beef sandwich with potato salad and iced tea(roughly $ 12 and change). Friendly staff, plenty of seating, good portion and delicious sandwich and potato salad. Sandwich comes with your choice of bread, trimmings and a slice of deli pickle. The real gem here is the iced tea as well. The raspberry peach tea is addicting. Will go back again and try some of the other sandwiches. Definitely a hidden gem in the Heights.

Way way overpriced. The sandwich quality is barely acceptable. We got two sandwiches and two drinks for almost $ 50! Don’t be duped by their banners claiming best of Houston, this place is slightly better than Subway.

We ordered the muffuletta since that’s what they’re known for and the honey ham and brie. The muffuletta was good, not mind-blowing, but I should preface this by saying I’m not much of a sandwich person. The honey ham and brie sounded amazing, but when it came out it was so sloppy that everything was dripping all over the place. The bottom piece of bread was so soggy it wasn’t edible. And I really hate it when places put a piece of lettuce that is 3 times bigger than your sandwich. What am I supposed to do with that? There is no graceful way to eat when lettuce is flopping all over your face.

Great local place in the heights. Was on our way to torchy’s to grab a bite, but decided to stop here and try it because I had heard good things. The hot roast beef sandwich was amazing. One of the staff members came by several times to see if we needed anything. Top notch.

Americans may not have invented sandwiches, but we sure as hell made it badass. The muffaletta is a game changer sandwich. Carter & Cooley makes a damn good version of the muffaletta, largely due to their delicious onion bread and the towering slices of deli meat in between. Olives are on a shortlist of foods I dislike. Every time I’ve ever tried to be sophisticated and eat one, I end up splitting it out rather low-classily into a napkin. In a muffaletta though, it’s not only tolerable, but enhances the flavor. It wouldn’t taste right if the olives were missing. I don’t know if there’s a reason for this, but muffalettas tend to be HUGE. I split it with a friend, which made room for the delicious corn and shrimp bisque. This place really appeals to me. It has that neighborhood deli charm that I thought only existed in movies, and the owners are so friendly. If I lived in the Heights, I could totally see myself becoming a regular here.

The first time I stepped foot into Carter & Cooley, I thought to myself that this was a different kind of a sandwich shop. Everything in here feels so old-school in a homey kind of way. I haven’t seen a long line yet and your sandwich is ready within minutes. The concept here is pretty simple. You walk up to the counter and place your order, they give you a piece of paper with your order and your name on it, you take it to the cashier and you pay. Every sandwich that you order comes with your choice of potato salad or a bag of chips, and a pickle spear. I always opt for the potato salad because the potato salad is super good. The first sandwich that I had here was the Parmesan chicken sandwich. Simple, but oh so good. I had also tried the grilled chicken sandwich smothered with some swiss cheese. Kind of healthy, but not in a boring subway kind of way. As for desserts, the only thing that I have tried is the turtle brownie and it was solid. Rich and filling. Yum! Now they just need to put them brownies in a microwave and put some ice cream on it to make it a la mode. Now, that would be awesome! Now let’s talk about the people that work here. There’s a bearded man whom I assume is the owner. He’s very nice and he asks everybody how their day is. There’s also a younger gentleman. Not sure if he’s the son of the owner, or if he just works there. But the second time I ever came in here and as I about to pay, he said to me, «Hi Belly, how’s your day so far?» Well, my name WAS written on the order sheet so I wasn’t surprised that he knew my name. What did surprise me was when he proceeded to say, «thank you for uploading the pictures on Unilocal!» Whoa! Hold the phone! What?! I hadn’t even written a review yet and this was only my 2nd time in the shop and he knew who I was. Yeah, at this point, I was kind of impressed(Don’t worry, I didn’t get a free meal or anything before writing this review.) The only thing that I don’t like about coming here is the parking situation. You have to find parking on the street. I have never tried coming here smack in the middle of lunch hour, but I’m going to guess that parking would be a total pain in the butt. If you work in the Heights are and looking for something good and quick, try this place out. Their huge selections of sandwiches, soups, desserts will guarantee that you’ll find something that you like.
