The restaurant is close to my work so I decided to give this a try. I ordered Coq Au Vin for lunch as it was the special for the day. It was ready in 15 minutes and I was in and out of the restaurant quickly. The service was friendly and the food was delicious! I would definitely come here again. The décor of the interior was very«french», which is a good thing. Very clean and professional as well.

I left my credit card on Sunday. And I got it back on Monday. I highly recommend this restaurant, especially the desert.

One of our favorite ‘classic’ restaurants. The food is always great and the atmosphere is warm and cozy, as if you really are on a lovely paris street, tucked into a brasserie on your favorite corner. Lovely & wonderful.

Location is really nice because you can have a great drink at Zimm’s and then wander up Montrose about 120 yards to Brasserie Max & Julie. We had the Chateaubriand and it was tender enough to part the protein with a fork. We also shared an Entre duex Mers wine(mainly Merlot) that was very well kept but needed a hard decanting to wake it up. Best part was the next table guy who is more of a wine snob than me but lacks the credentials — but we will soon be friends. He knows wine and loves Brasserie Max & Julie.

3 out of 4 brunches have been excellent. There’s a rogue waiter who’s terrible, hopefully you don’t get him. Otherwise the service and food is superior. I’m taking my family here for dinner when they come into town so hopefully it’s a good night.

Currently our favorite French restaurant in Houston. Very authentic Provencial cuisine and excellent service. The blue cheese and pear salad is fantastic!

I always love Max & Julie, whether for brunch, lunch, or a nice dinner. I dined there with my brother several weeks ago and we started with the raw oysters(which were delicious) and then moved on to salads and the fish special. Quality of service depends on your waitstaff(we ran out of water and couldn’t get anyone’s attention for a while), but in general is very good. One of these days, I’ll order the soufflé!

So disappointing. I’m not sure if the problem resides with management or the kitchen. I’ve been wanting to come here because this is the sister restaurant to Café Rabelais which I love. We came on a Sunday evening. My parents wanted to try the HRW menu and I wanted to try their regular menu. My parents both got the soup which came out in a comically large bowl compared to how much soup was inside. Anyway, everything was fine up until the entrees came out. My parents both got their plates. Our waiter went straight back into the kitchen and emerged several minutes later apologizing profusely because the chef just told him that they were out what I ordered which was sweetbreads. Now, I’ve never worked in a restaurant before but shouldn’t the chef know what he has and what he doesn’t have in his own kitchen? Especially when dealing with a restaurant in this price range. Why on earth would the chef wait until the last possible minute to tell the waiters that they ran out of an ingredient. The chef should have notified the waiters as soon as he received the ticket that they were out of sweetbreads. I had to order something else and in the 10 – 15 minutes I was waiting, I got to awkwardly watch my parents finish their meals. It would have been nice if they at least comped the dessert. The food was alright and the service was ok. I would rather go to Café Rabelais or any other restaurant in the area.

We tried Brasserie Max & Julie for brunch, and it was pretty good. The menu has your basic brunch items, such as eggs benedict, but it also has sweet and savory crepes.(They also let you order off the usual dinner menu if you want.) I had a waffle, and it was really nice, and the whipped cream served with it was decidedly homemade. The nutella crêpe was so-so; not bad but not really my favorite. My friend had the steak tartare and said it was very good, and the fries that came with it were fantastic.

My fiancée and I ate here late on a Saturday night. We had reservations and were seated quickly at a nice table upstairs. The food was great! We both had very large, colorful salads and good warm baked bread. I had the beef bourguignon and she had a half a chicken. The restaurant has a great atmosphere. We’ll definitely come back.

I have been in Houston for a month and this is easily the best meal i have had here so far. The cassoulet was fabulous! The restaurant is a perfect bistro and has everything you could want for lunch or dinner. The onion soup, bone marrow were awesome as well! Dont miss this place! Would rate 4.5 if available!!! Alex recommended a great Burgundy for a California Cabernet drinker.

Brasserie Max & Julie’s been on my radar for the many years I lived in Montrose. I’m glad I finally got to experience it, but let me first say that our table left rather disappointed in dinner and service(minus the hostess, barkeep and barbacks). First off the ambiance is everything you’d expect from a quaint French bistro. Small sexy bar, close seating quarters, outdoor patio, rooftop dining. We hosted a GNO birthday dinner, and the team was kind enough to move us outside to take advantage of the unseasonable Spring weather. The bread, the wine list, the company was all pleasant, but two things really could have left us with a better impression. 1. The server didn’t ask my girlfriend and I how we wanted our«duck two ways» prepared — which was fine because I always say«chef’s recommendation.» The fact that it is a French restaurant, we were prepared for rare to medium rare — unfortch, it came back well done. The duck filets were over-cooked; same for the roasted duck but with fatty, soggy skin with no crisp. 2. Our server didn’t seem to have much experience; just something I wouldn’t expect at a French resto. In addition to that, splitting our checks was a nightmare. Again, if Hooters and Pappadeaux can do it, so can most finer establishments. Despite leaving with a «meh» feeling, I will go back for their brunch, as many friends — including those at dinner — and Unilocal reviews claim that it’s worth trying.

What a nice surprise! The oysters were wonderful and the Caesar Salad was very tasty. We also had the steak au poivre was so tender you could use a fork to cut it. Veronica was very helpful!

This is a great little Restaurant on Montrose St, the food is wonderful and the staff is very friendly, I love getting their pepper steak(steak au poivre) with a good glass of wine which by the way is the only thing they serve along with beer(no liquor license). The reason I am giving this place a 3 star rating is because on several occasions I’ve had to wait almost 25 – 30 minutes at lunch for my food only to find out that the order had not been placed :(, however this issue reoccured with the same waiter several times and I haven’t seen him working there recently so he may have been let go but I’m not too sure. The parking is scarce too, they do offer valet parking in the lot next to them which is the Chase bank lot. As far as ambience goes this place is very intimate and a nice change from the big bustling noisy restaurants scattered around town!

Went there after reading the reviews and was not disappointed. The service was professional and pleasant. My food(foie gras, duck, soufflé) was wonderful. May not be the most memorable meal I have ever had(been to some amazing ones in NYC), but certainly went away with a very satisfied palate.

I love the terrace out front and on the roof of this restaurant. The service is pretty great as well. The food is ok. But definitely not as good as the sister restaurant Café Rebelais. The escargots are new on the menu and they put cheese over it, which is a plus, but they were dry and the garlic butter was lacking! The eggs and truffle with wild mushrooms are good. You can taste the truffle. The croissants are crispy and pretty good as well. But the highlight would definitely be the soufflé here! It is spectacular and comes out very fluffy! Overall, I wish the other foods gave me more of a wow factor. The crepes are sparse in filling, the croque Madame and croque Monsieur is always a favorite that you can’t go wrong with. The steak skewers are pretty flavorful and cooked to medium with 4 dipping sauces. Not bad for the brunch prices as well.

I admit it, I am a pretty big Franophile. that said my standards are pretty high. High enough to where nothing in current native Atlanta really lives up. I came here with someone who had liven many years in the St Germain area of Paris, and this was her top pick in Houston. We had an excellent meal, with great French wine, and shared the Chateaubriand with the choice of two sauces. We choose the peppercorn and the Grain Mustard. It was prepared perfectly medium rare, and was outstanding. The Brasserie carries the items I fully expect any French restaurant to maintain on their menu. Skate Wing, Caselette, French Onion Soup. Yes, this place is the real deal. Our waiter was from Lyon. Next time in Houston I will likely be back.

This is a charming place to come for good wine and authentic French food. Read: date spot! Our pleasant server(Sarah) was a pro at recommendations, including wine and food. Although it took us awhile to initially be greeted, we had good service throughout the remainder of the meal. Duck confit was melt in your mouth incredible and fell right off the bone. I wasn’t big on the ratatouille or the pommes dauphines at the time, but loved the pommes dauphines on my second visit. We were pleased with the pâte and the little gherkins. My date loved the steak tartare, and the presentation was gorgeous. We didn’t have room for dessert, but the soufflé seemed to be a hit, easy for two to share. The bread was phenomenal, by the way. It has a cozy atmosphere that seemed popular for dates in a nice-dress-or-blazer sort of way. It nails the feel of a true brasserie. The downside is the«valet» parking, wherein you tip someone(it’s free) to move your car fifty feet from where you exit it. Oh well.

Came here for brunch on a Sunday and sat upstairs outside on the patio. It was a bit hot but they had a fan and an umbrella over the table. There was a guy playing live music on the ground beneath us which was cute. For drinks, I tried the panache which is a beer/soda mix. It was pretty good! Smooth and light. For the food, I tried the salmon crêpe which was also pretty good. But the winner was definitely my companion’s duck and mushroom waffle — delicious!

This was my first stop for HRW2014, and I’m a bit torn about my experience… Generally speaking, before I venture to any new restaurant, I make it my point to intently study the on-line menu for items that may seem delectable to me. HRW requires 10X the research as some of participating restaurants are not on my radar, so the choice is strictly made based upon the menu(and Unilocal research). After studying all brunch menus, this is the only HRW menu that looked appetizing to me. I say all of that to say, that not only did I vary from my initial choices, but it seems that Brasserie Max & Julie did too… My first of trouble was when I had to actually ask for the HRW menu. Why not present a patron with both of them, and let them decide. Such a required request is an indication that the restaurant may be participating in name only, rather than the true spirit of participation and choice offerings. Either way, the next sign was when the menu was presented in a somewhat strange manner that required the interpretation(of choices) from my server. In short, the dessert option was missing! I mean, really – the highlight of any meal is dessert AND what about what was advertised. But I grabbed a hold of my sweet tooth and hoped for a separate dessert menu that would be presented at a later date but still a part of the brunch HRW prix fix – NOT. At this point, I’m not sure who I should complain to… On to the meal: while I was settled on ordering the cured salmon, quiche, and lemon tart. After asking from suggestions from my service, I changed to the duck crêpe, and croque monsieur, with NO dessert option… The duck and brie was great. I even added a little salt to create a salty sweet taste. The side salad could have been absolutely eliminated. The croque monsieur was interesting as the bread was a bit tough and the orangy sauce was just ok, but the small hair that was embedded in my cheese was just unacceptable. Because I don’t make a fuss, I simply moved it to the side and indulged… See my pic. That’s also the pic that I submitted for the HRW photo contest via Twitter. Good luck to me!
