Ok, this is an honest review. I tried the greens, rice, dressing, yams and ox tails. The worst was the dressing. It was a mushy consistency with no flavor at all, awful! The yams were dry as the Sahara desert and were hardly sweet. The ox tails were just ok and the rice was ok. Please don’t waste your money. I will not be going back and I really wanted to like this place. Oh and my husband had the Mac and cheese. I tasted it and it was 2.5 out of 5. Oh the greens appeared to be can greens dressed up. I don’t even finish my plate. I just gave up.

Absolutely awesome! The food reminds me of food straight from my grandmother’s kitchen. I didn’t have time to take a picture of my pork chops because I was to busy to stuffing my face with them. The prices are fair and the portions are plentiful. I totally see myself coming back here.

Omg this place is a hidden gem. I was on the other side of town today, and saw their sign off 1960. I’m glad we stopped here for lunch. My leftovers are even better day two. I will be back.

Fast and friendly service. Prices are average. I got the oxtails, greens and yams. It came with cornbread in a sandwich bag that crumbled so didn’t eat much. Cornbread is semisweet which I personally do appreciate. My meal was $ 15.49 after tax. Oxtails seasoned well, yams were good, but I didn’t care for the greens at all. They remind me of canned greens or worse. I gave 4 stars for quick service, friendliness, easy accessibility, hours of operation plus I would definitely go back again but just wouldn’t get the greens and I would want to pick my own cornbread baggy out IJS.

Holy mother. This place has stolen my heart. What a lovely, quaint place to sit down and enjoy some good soul food! My friend and I came here a little too late and a little too early. We got there right at 10:30 am. That is when breakfast is over. So we had to wait until 11:00 for them to re-open for lunch. And oh my… I am so glad we did. This food is bomb. I have never had ox tail before but holy moly, this stuff is good. It melts in your mouth and I was not ashamed to use my hands and get all the meat off the bones. The entrée came with rice and a choice of two sides. I chose to get mac and cheese and green beans. Oh my… it was amazing! And they gave us cornbread too. My friend and I ordered two ox tail plates with drinks, which came out to be around $ 35. It was absolutely worth every penny. Come to this small spot and meet the owners. They are very friendly and so very, very passionate about their food. It made the experience so much more soulful.

Although the plate looked good, this is the worst soul food plate I ever had! The smothered pork chop had NO flavor! The gravy was flavorless! The cabbage was disgusting. It had so much pepper and looked burnt. The sweet potatoes were mediocre. Nothing special at all. I will NEVER eat here again. Me and my boyfriend spent $ 23 and feel like we would have done better going to get fast food. Also the guy behind the counter was rude. Watched over the lady fixing my plate the whole time. Next time I want some GOOD soul food, I will be going to Christine’s off veterans/spears.

My GOSH! This place is good! I have seen this place a couple of times on my way out of Wing Stop and think, «Oh man I need to try it out!» and yet I kept forgetting to. Today I was Haaaangry and drove straight over to try this place. The place was packed. The servings were big. The menu is simple but that just means what they do, they do well. Smelled like heaven on earth in there. I tried the meatloaf but I have to go back and try the oxtails. If you have never had Soul Food, you don’t know what you are missing out on and I feel truly sorry for you and your existence. Its sad life you live. Try this place out. I hope they are around for a long time. The foodline is cafeteria style. There is a window to pay at the far end and its a tight fit between the payment window and the tables people eat. The set-up could flow better. I couldn’t see the desserts in the wall out of the payment window. I was in and out quickly. I didn’t really need dessert though. The servings are huge. I ate lunch and dinner from that plate and I ate well! My plate consisted of white rice, meatloaf, collard greens, yams, and cornbread. All delicious. I added a drink. Total cost was $ 14.

I stopped by for dinner last nite to grab a plate to go. I decided on port chops but the chicken was giving me a fight. The food was great all of it. And I mean good to the last bite. Thanks Sarg for the great service!

Attention Unilocal soldiers!!! Big sarge’s restaurants is on the frontline of the soul food war. I’ll start with the customer service there always polite and welcoming when you come in especially big sarge himself. Now to the nuclear bombshells of great food they have, my first visit here I got the smothered pork-chops with rice and gravy, Mac and cheese and yams. Which was amazing down to the last bite. But the item that wins the soul food war is there coca cola wings!!! When I tell y’all this is a must get item I ain’t never lying, tender and sweet but with the right seasoning it’s a game changer. Drop in for an official plate at big sarges.

Big Sarg — Big flavor. Big portions. Big personality. Really enjoyed our experience. The staff was very welcoming. Today’s selections included oxtails, smothered pork chops, baked chicken, and meatloaf. Sides included black-eyed peas, greens, mac-and-cheese, corn, green beans, candied yams, cabbage, and pinto beans. We had the meatloaf and gravy over rice. This may very well be the best meatloaf I’ve ever had. The gravy was rich and delicious. We enjoyed all of the sides we had, especially the black-eyed peas, greens, mac-and-cheese, and green beans. Love the cafeteria-style service, which means you can see the selections, and you get your food quickly.(Suggestion: Go directly to the serving line. You don’t really need to look at the menu, as everything is right there on the line. You will then pay at the window just past the serving line.)

Oxtails, rice, gravy, candied yams, and cabbage =happiness! Everything was worth it. The only thing they could improve on is the sweetness of the yams but the cornbread made up for it. Thanks, I will be back.

Left church and had a taste for some soul food so i googled and this place came up. I read a few reviews from my fellow Unilocalers and decided to give it a try. Sundays menu had chitterlings so I was also anxious to try it. The place is located next to the right of Wing Stop. I walked in and there were a few TVs with customers in the to-go line and also sitting down eating. Menu options were baked chicken, smothered pork chops and oxtails. I immediately went for the oxtails with cabbage and green beans. All meals come with a side of rice n gravy. The other sides were beans, greens(which looked straight out the can), macaroni(didn’t appear very cheesy) and some others I can’t remember(not a good sign). Lol All meals also come with cornbread. I asked for a side of peach cobbler(also listed on the menu) but was told they forgot to make it for today. The only other options were teacakes or chocolate cake, I went for the teacakes. I was so hungry I had to dive in. The oxtails were the BOMB as well as the rice n gravy and cornbread but everything was mediocre and lacking flavor. I love to support new businesses so I may go back to try another recipe and the peach cobbler. I give the oxtails a 4 but overall, I give a 3⁄5. My total was like $ 19. $ 15 for the plate, $ 3 and some change for the teacakes. Customer service was A+.

I tried the meatloaf, macaroni & cheese and cabbage. I usually prefer red tomato sauce over brown gravy on my meatloaf but it was very good. The meatloaf was moist and seasoned very well. The macaroni was good but the cabbage was just ok, in my opinion. The plate came with a piece of cornbread that was really good. Overall, my tastebuds were pleased. The owner was nice and personable; always a plus. I will be going back soon. So much more to try… :)

I’ve been driving by this place for a few months now and have not had the opportunity to try it. I always see handwritten signs on the windows with their specials. That’s when you know it’s good. Today I tried Big Sarg’s smothered pork chops with white rice, collard greens, corn and of course, cornbread. Big Sarg serves a generous portion of everything. It was so much I thought about saving some for later. But it was so good that I ate everything right there and then. I was so full lol. They had like 4 or 5 main entrees, all looked delicious. Especially the oxtail. I think that’s what I’ll try next time I go. :)

I made two visits to this new restaurant before writing this review in order to verify my first visit impression. My first visit had me trying their smothered pork chops that comes with rice and gravy and two veggies which I chose the broccoli cheese and rice casserole along with black eye peas. A nice sized piece of cornbread came with the meal. The food was well seasoned, flavorful and basically delicious. My second visit a couple of weeks later was to try their meatloaf along with rice and gravy. The two veggies that I picked were green beans and black eyed peas. Another nice sized piece of cornbread came with the meal. Again, the food was excellent just like the first visit. I am a particular fan of their cornbread which I think is perfect. Both meals were $ 10.99 before tax and drink and represented good value. While I love good soul food restaurants I have not found the establishments in Houston to offer much of it. For a city of this size I would expect more choices. IMO this restaurant offers some of the best soul food in Houston. Big Sarg’s understands how to cook good food. If you are in this area I consider this place to be a must stop. My only disappointment is how they don’t have free refills for their drinks(soft drinks and Kool aid). They should offer that free. C’mon charging $ 2.50 for Kool Aid and then another $ 1 for a refill???

I have become a big fan of local soul food places. Here is another top notch little hole in the wall place you should definitely go patronize. Locally owned and run by some of the friendliest folks you will ever meet. And the food is terrific! It’s a small place with maybe 5 or 6 tables and a small lunch counter with some old style counter stools. No it ain’t fancy. The menu is printed on the wall. There are some printed ones too if you want to take a look at it while waiting in line. Prices are decent at about $ 10 for a plate with meat and 2 sides and cornbread. Walk up to the cafeteria style serving counter and take a big ol’ deep breath. Smells good. Smells really good. Grab a tray, order from the nice gals behind the counter, get a drink and your silver and grab a seat. Lots of folks came in and got theirs to go. The day we were there they had meat loaf, smothered pork chops and oxtails. There were other entrees but those are the ones I remember. Sides included delicious green beans, some mildly spicy cabbage, greens, mac n cheese, black eyed peas. I can’t speak bad about any of the sides we tried. I am a smothered pork chop freak and they loaded me up with two fall off the bone tender little thin chops on a bed of white rice. Lots of gravy. I would have preferred mashed taters. But the rice was just fine once I started digging in. And dig in was what you had to do. The servings were more than generous. My 17 year old who is never full couldn’t finish everything on his plate. If you like good food, home cooked, well spiced and big ol’ portions, you will LOVE this place. The owner came by three times to check on us and see that we had what we needed, enjoyed our meal and ask us to come back again. You bet we will!

Some good customer service, a taste of soul food, and a good selection of food is what you can ask for when you are planning to come here. I went here for the first time and saw various selections, specials, and other home cooking foods that I couldn’t decide what to get for a minute. You walk in and order at the counter while you’re walking down to decide your food choices. I got the pork chops with rice and gravy on the side. Each meal also comes with two sides of your choice. I had the macaroni and collard greens. Then you pay them at the window and find a place to sit down and eat. I tried the pork chops and they had a nice, tender taste to them. It was also a nice flavor with the gravy and rice. The pork chops themselves were delicious because I tend to eat them often at home, and I found myself some more of those home style cooked chops. I also liked the greens on the side because it’s a nice, healthy vegetable that I would get at Luby’s every so often. Anyway, the macaroni also added flavor to the entire dish, but I’d go with the greens because those were some of the best collard greens I’ve tasted anywhere. Even though they charge refills for sodas and Kool Aid, it’s still a pleasure to go in and try some good American soul food. It was a new experience and I got a taste of my country’s home style cooking. Everything else on the menu looked delicious; I think I might have a special next time. The people that take orders are friendly and will check on you if you needed a refill on water or something. Overall I loved the cuisine of home style cooking and would love to come back to try more specials and what not.

Was headed into Wing Stop on the way to work today and noticed a little home cookin’ restuarant had opened up right next door. It was easy to miss as they had no big storefront signage and just an open sign with a banner hanging behind a slightly tinted window. This is not visible from 1960, but is in the Kroger parking lot in the building next to Wing Stop behind Chick-fil-a and the gas station. Décor is nothing special… a few tables available for seating. Many of the dishes and sides are ready made and quickly served cafeteria style for you to eat their or take with you to go. Customer service is pretty lacking, they don’t seem to know how to engage with customers and are hoping to get by on their food alone… I think they’d be apt to be much more successful going forward if they provided a memorable experience in both areas. Neither myself nor the two gentleman ordering in front of me were treated to much more than the bare bones of service. What can I get you? What sides do you want? Do you want a drink. Here’s your total. Good bye. The food fared better. I opted for oxtails over rice as my main and selected mac and cheese and peas w/beans as my sides. The oxtails were on point… cooked perfectly and falling off the bone. The gravy they were served in was good, but not spicy(I like a spicy brown gravy with my oxtails). Unfortunately I didn’t have any hot sauce to add to it, but was still good overall. The rice rice baby it was served over however was a mess. Clumpy, mushy, almost a rice mash at times… it didn’t taste bad, but the texture was not pleasant and definitely detracted from the dish rather than adding to it. They’d do well to invest in a good rice cooker for better consistency in their product. The peas with beans was the highlight of the meal. Savory, a little spicy, hearty, a perfect combination of ingredients that just screamed of southern soul. The mac & cheese was a very cheesy shell type pasta which was good but not great. I think next time I’d give the greens a whirl as they looked pretty good. Portions were stellar. In fact, the styrofoam take out tray was so weighed down by the rice and oxtails in the front that it almost broke in half when I picked it up! Be sure to support from the bottom(i.e. LACESOUTDAN!!!) This is a new business, so a few things they need to work out to really find their niche and likely make themselves viable long term, but I’ll definitely go back to try some of their other dishes. Edit 10.1.2014 Went back today and had the smothered chicken wings. Rice was better consistency. That chicken and the gravey were amazing! Service was much friendlier. Upping to 4 stars for now… will look for them to have some consistency in positive directions. 11⁄16 — Stopped to pick up food on the way to work. Ordered the smothered chicken. Got to work and found smothered pork chops. Not a big pork chop fan. :-/
