Always like the food here as it is a welcome alternative to the other hospital cafeterias in the area. I’ve noticed employees from many other institutes in the medical center eat here so they probably agree with me, Options galore with many food bars from salad, pasta, asian, cajun, and then your standard Luby’s selections. I usually stick with the veggie plate for $ 4. Only bad thing about the place is that it’s not clear which vegetables are made with meat unless you ask them or while you bite down on the food.

If you work at Baylor College of Medicine this is the best choice you have for a quick and easy meal. From most offices on the Main Campus you can grab some quick food and be back to work in under ten minutes. The soups are good — there’s always three available that rotate daily, though they are often repeated during the week. The crowds I see are usually stacking on top of each other to get to the Green Chile or Potato Soup, both of which are excellent. Grab some fruit or a bag of chips and you have the quickest and cheapest lunch available. The pizza is decent, but prepare to ingest a bucket of grease and feel pretty yucky after. And don’t bother with the wings — worthless without any sauce. Come on guys! How do you have a plate of breaded fried chicken wings with no sauce? The salad bar can be pricey — be warned! Only eat as a last resort. If you order something from the sandwich counter, know you might be waiting a while. The burgers or chicken sandwiches can take a LONG time to get ready. Also know they’ll almost always dump fries into your box without asking. Don’t know how many times I’ve just tried to get a sammie and I get a plate of soggy, flavorless fries as well :-| Oh, and for the unaware, there is a very good breakfast selection. Yogurts with mixins, breakfast tacos(pretty good when dipped in salsa, and cheap) as well as a variety of pastries.

The food is passable, and the service staff is friendly enough. If you forgot your lunch at home, eating here is better than going hungry… though it’ll cost you. As reviewer Mariah D. notes, you especially have to watch charges at the register in case the cashiers forget you’ve purchased a meal«deal.» My biggest gripe is actually the lack of tall straws; they only supply standard-height bendy straws. Yeah, I said it. If you buy a large fountain drink, bystanders will watch in disgust as you orally assault your cup to get the last of your tall drink through a too-short straw. Not an earth-shattering problem, but I’ve resorted to getting extra straws from McDonald’s, Sonic, etc., to bring with me. Overall, it’s decent cafeteria food.

This cafeteria meets the expectations I have for a college cafeteria. I go because I work at BCM and it’s conveinent. But overall, it’s overpriced food that’s merely edible. And to clear up the confusion, no, this place is not supposed to be open to the public, but employees from other institutions(Methodist, Ben Taub and UT peeps mainly) come in and eat frequently without any trouble from security. The best part about this dining establishment in TMC is that you WILLNOT encounter sick patients. I know, that sounds terrible, but since this is located in a medical school and not a hospital, you won’t be dining in what feels like an infermary. MD Anderson, anyone? I consider this a perk of being at BCM, but there are actually 2 nice outdoor courtyards nearby that I always enjoy my meals in. Currently, I’m the duchess and you’re likely to find me in the small courtyard at the bottom of the stairs. Come over and say hi. :) If you’re an inside eater, there is abundant seating inside and the trash cans are never overflowing and the floors are kept clean. I’ve tried about everything they have to offer here, including their catering service. The salad bar is nice with a lot to pick from, but it adds up quick since they charge per ounce. The soups are always a safe bet and reasonably priced with my favorites being the seafood gumbo on Fridays and the chicken tortilla soup. The burger station is good when Tanya is working it. The Luby’s portion is OK, but everything is oversalted and high in carbs and butter. The pizza is thick, greasy and gross. Even though it’s pricey, I like the build your own stir fry or pasta station since it’s hot, fresh, and filling. The breakfast offerings are good. The grits are a favorite in our office, and there are a lot of toppings from cheese to syrup and nuts to pick from. Do be weary of what you’re being charged. There are always daily specials that include sides and a drink, but occassionally the cashiers forget these specials and will overcharge you significantly. Know what you ordered and the advertised price and they’ll make the adjustment.

As a student here at Baylor, it’s incredibly useful to have a cafeteria on campus, both for late breakfast runs and lunch. It does get incredibly crowded for lunch(especially between 11:50 and 12:30), so you’d have to get here pretty early or late to make sure you don’t wait around in line for too long. Lots of items on offer — a global cuisine bar that changes every week, pizzas, custom sandwiches(specials change every week too), a salad bar, and regular lunch items like meat loaf, chicken-fried steak, etc. that change daily. Prices are generally cheap for the quality of the food, and items are always warm. If it’s too noisy you’ll have to raise your voice for the kitchen staff to know what you’ve ordered.

Since I’ve been working at Baylor for over 3 yrs now I have definitely frequented this location. I’ve had good and bad experiences with this place, most are good though. I must say they have really good breakfast tacos for like $ 1.09. If you are super hungry one might not be enough for you. As for lunch, it gets overly crowded during the lunch rush hour so I only come here when I don’t feel like going far for a meal. They have lots to choose from like pizzas, burgers, custom sandwiches, pasta bar or cajun bar(certain days), hot foods like fried chicken and such, a variety of soups and a pretty big salad bar.

From all the med center cafeterias that I have tried(been to many since I work in the TMC), I feel that the Luby’s at Baylor Cafeteria is probably one of the best cafeterias to eat at around area. I think Methodist across the street is excellent too BUT some dishes at Baylor are cheaper and just as good. Also, the Herman Memorial cafeteria sucks compared to Luby’s. If you want fried food, greasy pizzas, and a mediocre salad & sandwich bar that’s expensive, then go to Herman. If you want decent food that’s not inflated in price, go to Luby’s. BTW Luby’s has one of the best breakfasts! I love breakfast here. It’s only till 10am though. I like getting the blueberry pancakes and breakfast tacos. The breakfast tacos come with freshly made salsas. YUMMY. My whole breakfast under $ 3.50. Luby’s has one of the best salad bars just for $.37 an ounce. They also offer soups, pasta/stir fry bar, pizza, calzones, chicken wings, build-your-own sandwich bar, a grill with specialty burgers(turkey, veggie, beef), dessert bar with different cheesecakes(oreo, keylime, strawberry), pies, ice cream, and cakes. They offer freshy squeezed juices, and have a program called«healthy choice» where meals are prepared in certain portions which fit under a 500 calorie budget. Anyways, luby’s is great. It’s clean and has a lot to offer. eat there. they have flat screen TVs for entertainment.

NOTE: review is on the Gumbo only. I have had my share of gumbo in my life, but nothing has ever come close to the stuff I get at the Baylor College of Medicine Cafeteria. I know, I know, that seems like the oddest place you might find good food — at a cafeteria, a college one at that, but trust me, it’s to die for. I worked at Baylor for just 6 months(it felt like eternity, really) — kinda like hell, and only a hair cooler in the mid summer Texas heat… but I was blessed with the gift of Friday gumbos. Even today, years after the trauma that is Baylor, when I go home to Houston, I always plan on being there on a Friday and driving the 20 some odd miles to the Texas Medical Center to purchase multiple quarts of gumbo. It’s worth the effort, but a lot of effort it is… 1) the gumbo is only served on Fridays 2) they almost always run out within the hour 3) here’s the kicker — I’m not completely sure the cafeteria is open to the public The last few times I can remember, I’ve had to sneak past the security guards. And I was caught once, and ended up having to drop a few names. I donno, may be the thrill is part of the attraction — it’s possible that if you asked nicely, they will let you in. But, if you are an employee of the Texas Medical Center, you have no excuse! It’s imperative– you MUST go and have the mythical gumbo.
