Visited the Hot Sulphur Springs for a quick day trip and was blown away by the pools, ambiance, and the overall atmosphere of the sulphur springs! The fee is about $ 19 for access to 26 pools(some are seasonally closed) ranging in temperature from 85 – 112 degrees. The pools themselves are more like mini hot tubs with sulphuric water, nestled into the boardwalk with a great view of the mountains. I especially enjoyed the Columbine Pool, the Last Pool, the Ute Pool, and Lupe’s. Mostly because they were the hottest ones and we were in need of some warming up on the 27 degree day! Came out feeling relaxed and renewed. Can’t wait to go back(maybe when it’s a little warmer out!!)

Ok. here’s the deal… the water in the adult hot pools was amazing and I actually feel better! That’s the amazing part. Now for the negative, in case you didn’t know, sulphur smells terrible. Just be aware of this. Bring flip flops because in the winter they salt the area and it’s a killer on the feet. The area needs to be seriously updated. It’s ok as far as cleanliness, but don’t expect too much or you will be seriously disappointed. It’s not filthy, but it’s all about the minerals anyway. If you are wanting clean and perfect, go to an indoor pool at the local 5 star hotel. We also had kids and they got bored and hated the smell. I would not bring them with next time. They would have had more fun at the hot tub back at the cabin we rented.

The springs where delightful. The place smelled like rotten eggs, but that is to be expected. During the day it was to warm out side for us to sit in the springs, but once the sun went down and it cooled off we had a great time. The hottest spring was almost to hot to even sit in so we sat on the edge for a while. The only bad part is that they had a issue with plumbing so we couldn’t stay there.

OK. There are 19 pools with cool views. Some tubs are very very small though. This is a nice place to spend an afternoon but probably not worth a separate trip like we did. It’s not the lost upscale place if that’s what you are looking for.

The images and info given on their website is not accurate. #1 Don’t even try using your GPS because it will take you everywhere except for this place #2 Sulphur smells like eggs, it is just something you need to be aware of before entering. #3 The ‘springs’ are man-made and the spring water is pumped in from 4 miles away. #4 Even though it says it is open year round it did not look open, nor did the girl at the desk offer to show us around prior to us purchasing. Finally, we opted not to pay the $$ to experience their spring and«spa». We left disappointed and quite duped by what was advertised.

My family and I have been going to Hot Sulphur Springs(HSS) for years. We go at least once a year because my dad is a hot spring fanatic. If it were up to him, he’d drive 2+ hours every weekend for some hot springing. I admit, growing up I thought it was boring as heck to sit around in some smelly hot water listening to the grownups talk. But I’ve come to really appreciate and enjoy a good soak, especially after snowboarding. Since I usually go to HSS after snowboarding, it’s usually snowing and/or freezing cold while we are at the pools. Insane you say? Yes, but it’s worth it! Here are some tips for enjoying HSS in the cold(or warm). — Bring or rent($ 2/each) TWO towels. One for warmth as you’re moving from pool to pool and one for toweling off after your shower at the end. OR you can be a boss like the elderly Korean group I saw and bring your own robes. You will look really intimidating walking around the pools with your robes complete with fedora and sunglasses. — You can rent a locker for 50 cents or bring your own lock for their communal lockers. — Bring flipflops! This is key in the winter, as they salt their walkways with chunky salt. Your feet will be cold and sore from walking on cold hard salt. — Bring your own bathing suit. But if you forget, they sell some for men and women for about $ 20-$ 30. — Bring sunscreen for your face as you will be sitting around in the sun for a couple hours. — Bring hairbrush and toiletries if you want to rinse off afterwards. They say you don’t need to as the minerals are good for your skin. But sulphur does smell like eggs, so you might want to minimize the smell. — Bring an empty plastic bag to store your wet swim things so it doesn’t stink up the rest of your stuff as much. — Pack a lunch! You might get hungry after soaking in some hot springs. There is a lounge area with microwave and you are welcome to bring your own lunch to heat up. I usually pack sandwich materials. There is also cup noodles for sale if you wish. HSS also has facials, massages, and onsite lodging but I haven’t tried these so I can’t tell you how good they are. HSS is my favorite hot spring because it’s relatively close(2 hours) but is still a great quality hot spring. Some of the closer ones get much more crowded, are dingy, or don’t get as hot. The hottest pool at HSS is upwards of 110 – 112 degrees! Last SUPER pro, kind of secret tip: The large pool with the waterfall(great for massaging your neck and shoulders) has a secret alcove to the back right side of the pool. You have to lift yourself up over the mid-level wall and down into the little nook but since it’s semi-enclosed this little pool of water gets much hotter than the rest. There’s even a slanted wall for you to lie back on. Enjoy!
