Zippy’s Koko Marina

There was nobody at the front except one lady. We greeted her because she was facing the other way. She turned around, looked upset and turned her back on us. We didn’t see that she was counting the money. She could say she’d get someone to help us, but she didn’t say anything.
Finally another lady spotted us and asked a gentleman to help us.
Wun tun min ($ 6.80): the chasiu was so chewy. it should be called CHEW siu. No, I am not exaggerating. The wonton tasted old :(the noodle and broth tasted meh. I was very disappointed.
Surf pac ($ 12.45): two fried chicken, two pieces of teri beef, one piece of spam with rice. The fried chicken was cold and salty. The teri beef was ok. The best part was the spam.
Fruit punch ($ 3.35): kinda good. I like Zippy’s fruit punch.

Zippy’s Koko Marina is not yummylicious!

We’ve been coming to this Zippys a few times a month for several years now. The food quality is good and the waiters are very friendly. Overall service has significantly gone downhill. They are horribly understaffed, making your waits very long. While tables are available, there is always a long line waiting to be seated. Food takes a long time together served as they are short staffed in the kitchen. The waiters tell us that many times the manager has to cook. Zippys management needs to wake up or this restaurant will close. That would be a shame for this is the only Zippys on a marina with a view.

I have been told that it is a sin for a tourist to try out this place but not the chili. Bill Clinton dined here too back when he was president: my dad’s cousin, who is a local, was there and saw him, Hillary, Chelsea, and all the Secret Service Agents enter. He shook Clinton’s hand on his way out.
But I digress. That was over 20 years ago. Fast forward to 1÷9÷2016.
Chili moco loco solves that dilemma with my love of loco mocos. Two scoops rice (white or brown) with two eggs any style you like, hamburger patty, and a scoop of their famous chili. Nice waterfront views, too. You can see Costco on the other side. Service was okay. My dad’s cousin enjoyed his soup.
However, my water glass was dirty. The lipstick marks on my glass were there when it arrived at my table. Everything else about the meal was enjoyable. I would come back. Lots of menu options make it good for groups: there is plenty both for those who want Hawaiian-​style food and those who want a more mainstream American flavor.

Not one to write, but the customer service here has prompted me to write my first review.
My bf and I dined in a few months ago and ended up walking out bc we sat at our table with no water, waiting to get our order taken for over 15 min. We watched the older local lady walk by multiple times with not one acknowledgement from her. Mind you, each time she walked by she was carrying one piece of pie to one table, one cup of coffee to another. It def was not a busy day.
Two days ago my friends and I came in and same thing! We sat for 20min (I know this bc I checked my text messages) before walking out bc we were waiting to get our order taken without any water and not one acknowledgement. The older couple next to us, who came in before us, was pretty heated as well and stood up to find someone and complain. They were served coffee but had been waiting longer than us to get their order taken. I noticed the same older local lady serving the tables next to us. Not sure if she had our section as well but figured so.
I’ve been coming here for the past 30 years and have never experienced service like this from this location. With the marina view and homely feel this is my fav Zippys location. I hate to write this kind of review bc up until now their service and servers have been on point, but something needs to be done bc 20 min before we’re served water and get our order taken is pretty ridiculous, especially when it’s not busy. I can’t imagine we were the only ones to walk out by now. Hoping management fixes it soon bc no one on the island makes a better mushroom omelet with cheese.

The view is amazing for this Zippys, but the service is very very slow. I think there’s only one person working the tables. Not very tentative here. Doesn’t even ask, during our meal, if there is anything else we need. Horrible service. Whomever is the manager should retrain their employees. Upon coming in the hostess was counting change and never even acknowledged us walking in. She could’ve paused after counting one stack of bills.
Surf Pac was super salty today. I don’t think I’ll get that again here, we’ll if I come back here at all.
Oh wow the waiter brings us the bill and then finally asks us if we need anything else? That’s sad. Bad timing. Shouldn’t he have asked us first and if we have room for dessert? Then come back with the bill? Disappointing.
Will not recommend this location to anyone.
OK one good thing besides the view, the restrooms are very clean.

Zippy’s is zippy’s but this one is different cause it is near the marina and it makes it seem like it is a little more «ocean”-ish than the others. I like that it has a certain ambiance but again it is the same place where the only thing I eat there anymore is chicken, chili, and the chicken, wait… the chili too.
I actually found something new there that I really like that is the chili moco. Yeah, you heard right the CHILI MOCO. Instead of gravy you get the zippy’s chili on the patty. Make sure you get the cheese and onions too to round off the goodness.
If you are in the Koko Marina area, and you want some «comfortable» goodness that we all know and semi-​love, go to this zippy’s.

Ordered take out. Took 30 minutes to get the order. Was told they were waiting on the grilled cheese and loco moco to finish. Think that was a lie because people who placed orders before us had larger orders and walked away with what they ordered before us. Sorry Zippys. Need to step up the game.

Went to eat dine in at 10:20 they close at 11 pm but worker said that they are closed ask him why when it says 11 you folks close he didn’t know what to say he turn around and walk away I eat at this zippys alot that’s not cool my son was hungry so was I was very unhappy with the customer service

I think this one of the more nice, chill, and laid back kind of Zippy’s on the island. It is really nice because it is right next to and on the Koko Marina harbor area. There is a decent amount of table and seating areas all around the restaurant. Napolean bakery is also of course connected to the Zippy’s when you go further in. Whenever I come here to eat, it is mostly in the night time before catching a movie (at the Koko Marina consolidated theaters) or something. It makes for a nice meal after a hike after Koko Head or a beach day or a day at Hanama Bay or anything leisurely related in the Hawaii Kai area. It is right at the far end of the Koko Marina Shopping Center next to Hawaiian Surf Adventures and the Dog the Bounty Hunter store. There is parking around the Koko Marina Shopping Center but it could fill up depending on what time of the day and what day you go. They have free, complimentary water next to the condiments but sometimes if gets emptied out quickly and you have to tell them to refill it haha

Great food great view and great service at prices the community can live with!
Great service. Try the hamburger steak, old time food at old time prices… the roast turkey is crazy good… don’t miss it

Having gotten food from this location for 20+ years i went in tonight and ordered a mini chefs salad I had to wait 25 minutes for a chefs salad with almost no lettuce. This is the last time I will ever eat at a Zippys. It has turned into like everywhere else in Hawaii Kai only fresh high school graduates working there on their first job, with zero training in coustomer service

Slow service. Stood by the bakery for 10 mins ringing the bell and no one comes. Food is just like other Zippy’s but service is slow. My friends who live in HK actually order the food over the phone from home so they don’t have to wait. That’s how slow they are. Shame.

Absolute no service what so ever. No respect for customers, horrible service. It is matter over mind for them. YOU DON’T MATTER TO THEM AND THEY DON’T MIND.
As soon as they see with Kids or adults it seems like trouble or headache for them. I was born and raised in this island, but never seen anything like this. They should be ashamed for their behavior.
I will not recommend to any of my family or friends to this location.
On top of all this the waiting… oh my… we were waiting at least 40 min. where clearly you can see empty seats… Thank GOD I canceled and went to different place.
I really do hope your senior management would see every rating on this location and try to at least act to change.

Need to complain about this, should have done it earlier. There is this waitress (a regular), she has no personality. She only serves who she likes, homalei-​malei (maybe for more tips) she’ll seem to work with this guy hostess. Am a regular every weekend, and I notice this; at first, I didn’t think anything until one time she got upset verbally to him for sitting us in HER section.
Our waitress tonight is new, but nice. However, when complaining about a meal, I mentioned it must be a new cook, & she said she would let him know. Two minutes later, I hear the cook shout out loud «It wasn’t me!!!»
(Real professional) And hear our waitress talking to the regular waitress mentioned above, & starts laughing.
I am not imagining all this.
I do not recommend this place; and as a regular customer, I do not feel welcomed!

Zippy’s has your typical local fare: plate lunches, saimin, pastries and desserts. I love Zippys fried chicken and no bean chili, so when I’m feeling particularly hungry for fried food and carbs, I come to zippys for a pretty unhealthy meal. Their breakfasts also are pretty good.
This location is a-​ok. They have an outdoor seating area overlooking the marina on one side and parking lot on the other. The tables are usually dirty and I’ve never seen a worker outside of the cashier area, so I’m not sure how often the tables get cleaned. They do have plenty of parking however, and it’s a stable option if you end up in hawaii Kai and are in need of some good hearty food. They are located all the way at the end of. Parking lot though and I forget they are there sometimes in lieu of all the other restaurants and take out places that are closer to the highway in the Koko Marina shooing center.
I didn’t find the cashiers to be particularly friendly and the bathroom situation was dismal. Let’s be honest though, how often do you crave zippys? I always come here as an after thought or when I’m desperate, so I don’t usually have very high expectations, unfortunately.

Feels a little like the Denny’s of the island, but over the years have expanded their menu to include healthier options like salads. A favorite takeout for casual bbqs, sports games, everyone loves a little Zippys on their plates.
Napoleon’s bakery attached allows for easy dessert fixes post-​island comfort food coma. Dobash cake, coconut cream, and other sweets available like malasadas and a spread of donuts. ²⁴⁄₇ hours make it a good place for all-​nighter study sessions and late night post-​movies scarfing.

This is a shining example of what Zippy’s can be like when it tries. With open breezeways for outdoor seating and a spacious indoor dining room, the facilities are spotless and pleasant. There’s somewhat limited parking in this extremely busy shopping area, though. Just a consideration.
Zippy’s food is ubiquitous and consistent. Expect all the local favorites, including the famous chili that is so conspicuous at school fundraisers. Generally, you can’t go wrong with the menu, but expect a heavy dose of Hawaiian Paralysis.

The location is cool because you can chill outside and catch some breeze, and see the ocean.
There was a small line when we arrived, and a poor old lady working (felt bad). We ordered the the Teri Beef Burger and the rice plate with corn beef, egg, and sausage. It took about 15 minutes which i thought was kind of crazy considering its not a fast food joint, though food trucks whip better food out and more quickly.
The Teri burger was drenched in sauce, i mean this thing was juiced up even onto the bun. The meat was tender, and overall it was just meh. Ive had better burgers at mc Dzz.
The rice plate was a average portion, and the rice was at least cooked well with a sticky consistency, but everything else was just blah. I mean ive seen the locals dumping Hella Ketchup onto the plates, and my friend (a use to be local) was about to, had to stop her.
I hear many say this place is great, but it just is high caloric food, fried, sauced up, and what not. Way better hawaian food elsewhere on the islands.

Hawaii’s fast food stop located throughout the island. I particularly liked this location due to being located on a beautiful boat harbor on Hawaii Kai.
For being a local spot, this place offer a pretty huge variety of food to choose from, including Hawaiian classical favorites such as Loco Moco (Rice topped with beef, gravy and a fried egg) and Kalua (shredded pork with rice).
I had the special with steak, fried chicken and fish combo… a lot of food! If your very hungry and looking for a local spot, this is probably the place to be!
