I’ve been coming to Chinatown for groceries almost on a weekly basis ever since I was four. It was always with my paternal grandpa when I was small, and then with grandma, and my maternal grandparents later on. They all have taught, and STILL teaches me today, to roam around Chinatown first to look at which store has the best prices and the best produce, with prices being the most important. Yes, classic Traditional Chinese style! Nowadays, in regards to produce, I look at the quality now. The prices are about the same at every store anyway. I’d pay gladly a few cents more for better quality.
With that thought process in mind, I always find myself coming back to Xin Wang Market and purchasing most of my produce here because it’s better quality and more fresh. It’s conveniently located next to Yat Tung Chow Noodle Factory along King Street, a few shops down from Kekaulike Market.
From what I’ve noticed, Xin Wang Market always opens a bit earlier and closes a bit later than the rest of the markets. You can start your produce shopping before 6AM!
The lovely ladies who work here do a great job in cleaning, sorting, and organizing each vegetable. Everything is displayed neatly and orderly. The entire store is one of the smaller ones, but it is brighter, cleaner, cooler, and more comfortable compared to other places.
In addition to its great produce, Xin Wang has an excellent variety of frozen foods and meats. There are several items that are unique that you see only see at this store, and most of its items you may see at other stores, but the quality is a lot better. One item that immediately comes to mind is Birthday Buns. Only this store sells the larger bag with the smaller size buns. Other stores sell the larger sized, six-​pack that are always expired.
Trying to be the best local-​born, Traditional Chinese person, I have to be frugal and economical, so I always check out the one-​dollar per bag vegetable section. Almost at every single store, the one-​dollar bags are overripe, moldy, discolored, mushy, and ready to be thrown out. However, Xin Wang Market dollar vegetables are infinitely better than the rest. I’m not saying every single bag is perfect, but most of the time, the fruits and vegetables are still decent quality that you will be more than comfortable purchasing. I love buying these one dollar bags because there’s a good assortment, they are cheap, and each bag is the perfect amount for dinner preparations.
Overall, I always enjoy shopping here. Good quality produce with a nice variety of items. The staff here is very friendly with a pleasant demeanor and appearance. In case you were wondering, most of the ladies speak decent English, and there is one in particular that is able to speak it better and most importantly, listen and understand it!
