Awesome store! I’ve been buying and selling coins there since about 2002. The owner is the author of the book, «Hawaiian Money» and very knowledgeable, honest and fair.

I am surprised that this place is rated as low as it is. My dad and I have both sold some estate coins and other valuables there twice and staff was really efficient. Place kind of reminds me of Pawn Stars because both establishments are family businesses with the elder male being the final say when I comes to buying stuff. I’d definately go back. The complaints about customer service in other reviews seem odd because it is the type of business that I think you would approach with a specific purpose. When I went to sell I approached the counter with my items and told them what I wanted and they helped me. I suppose if you just looked around or seemed uncertain about what you wanted they might take an indirect approach because I am sure they get people who just want to look around and they don’t want to waste their time and seem like they are pressuring someone to sell or buy something, that they don’t really want. I am not sure but that is my guess.

I was looking into acquiring some small amounts of gold bullion for gifts in the form of coins or bars, and the Royal Hawaiian Mint recommended I start here. A very nice selection of coins and the owner seems knowledgable, but seems disinterested in selling gold to perceived newbies. Further, his markups were significantly higher than Alii Coins and Currency,(which was much more helpful and who eventually got my business). In fact, between parking garage fees and his markups, I can’t imagine this being the best option to buy gold bullion in amounts less than $ 1000. I can’t comment on selling. He did have a bitcoin dispenser though if you’re into that.

Let’s just say, customer service is their major flaw here. When I went in, there were two guys just having conversation, and probably went on for 10 minutes without even acknowledging me. As I made my way around, I was finally approached by one of the female workers there. This is one of the few places that buys your old coin collections. Knowledge: The girl that helped me was very quick to appraise my collection. Not to mention the price was really awesome as well. While I was expecting $ 10 – 15 for my meager collection turned out to be about $ 42. Selection: Definitely the biggest collection of coins/stamps on the island. Can’t vouch for the prices, but this place is a coin/stamp collector heaven.

Cool stuff, but poor customer service. The elderly guy there was busy doing his thing when I went in; he looked up at me and went back to doing his thing. A minute later, he asked what I needed. I got a 1930 dime, and after I paid him he just started putting his things away. No thank you or a smile! He was not friendly at all! :( Oh, parking was tough. I parked at longs and walked over, which took about 5 mins.

Drove downtown today just to shop at this store. We inherited a small coin collection and I wanted info about the coins, what to look for, best way to store, etc and I wanted to buy some folders. Walked in, smiled at the guy behind the counter and got nothing in return. He was too busy talking to his friend. So I waited, looked, picked up items, etc. the friend left and another guy came out from the back. Still no acknowledgment that I was even in the store. First employee went outside to smoke and walked right past me, I might add. As he went out, an older woman came in and she got helped right away. Thanks but no thanks. I’ll order online if I have to and find someone else to help me figure out what to do with the stash of silver coins

Rating: 2⁄5 Inventory: 4⁄5 Service: 2⁄5 Atmosphere: 3⁄5 Price: 3⁄5 Parking: 2⁄5 Trisha P’s review is right! The girl that works there is not pleasant. No customer service skills, and she doesn’t know whether or not they buy or don’t buy certain items. She repeatedly had to ask the 2 men working there. What a waste of money paying the chick. The 2 men might as well do the work. I don’t know if I’ll be back. Inventory: The most I’ve seen in the State of Hawaii. Service: The 2 men are knowledgeable, but the girl needs to go. Atmosphere: Open and spacey. Price: I can’t compare with anyone else just yet. Parking: Holy Crap! I had to drive around and around to get metered parking.

Two thumbs(and a «shaka») WAY up to the crew at Hawaiian Island Stamps & Coin. Parking can be a real challenge in this area of downtown(hence the –1 star). However, I’m so glad that I persisted parking 2 or 3 streets over on Queen Emma, as I was able to find precisely what I was looking for in a Hawaiian coin. Staff polished my 1883 King Kalakaua ¼ dollar coin and set it in a jewelry slide pendant. Finished result took my breath away and was pure magic! Very competitive pricing, even comparing online sites like eBay. Great coin shop experience.

i don’t collect coins, or stamps, or antiques — but if you’re looking for things like this, this shop is for you. the older guy working(i’m assuming he’ s the owner?) is extremely knowledgeable(expected, right…) and they have a ton of cool things in the cases. i’d give the selection 5 stars. the 3 stars is from the young girl that works there. she is a ball of teen-aged angst. my friend was asking a legitimate question about the coins she was looking for, and instead of just answering her question, this girl gives her attitude. a lot of it. if you need to go to this shop, talk to the older guy, avoid the girl. honestly, the guy knows more anyway.

Went in to sell some American Eagles«$ 50» Gold Coins. These gold coins contain 1 ounce of gold in them. They offered to buy our coin for 98.25% of the NY Gold Spot price. These guys are the real deal and are honest and will not rip you off like other gold places! They will pay you cash on the spot too.(Or a check, as we requested.) Don the owner is somewhat disheveled but he is honest and knows how to run a coin shop. I’ll take him any day over that«nice» guy at The Gold Guys… Here’s my rundown of trying to sell my One Ounce Gold coin on March 10, 2012: ================================= New York Gold Price per ounce: $ 1713 1. Hawaiian Islands Stamp & Coin Buy @ $ 1683, 98.25% of Spot 2. The Gold Guys Buy @ $ 1542, 90% of Spot 3. Secured Gold Buyers Buy @ $ 1503, 88% of Spot 4. Wedding Ring Shop Buy @ $ 1387.77, 80% of Spot 5. Honolulu Trading Company Buy @ $ 1250, 73% of Spot Note: Hawaiian Island Stamp and Coins deals in gold coins, not gold scrap.
