You know that place where common sense, curiosity, and the time it comes to make a decision meet? And for whatever reason, curiosity is picked over common sense. There’s review for that. On the mountain side of Korea-moku right off the stoplight on Young Street is a cluster of Korean businesses. You KNOW the kind. It’s where you never see anyone going in or out or have any regular kind of business whatsoever? One with a shady and dark back room where all Korean patrons sit. I walk home along Young street nearly every day. Well, waiving better judgment I wandered into Flower Coffee House on a really hot day. Seeing that they had the generic pictures of cold and savory shaved ice and also had one of those Japanese shave ice banners, I figured, «What the heck.» Upon entering, it looks more like a snack bar and as the door bell rung, the proprietor came out from the back room to help me with my order. First thing I noticed was that the shave is a small hand cranked machine. Whoa, now I’m interested. Haven’t seen one of them in a while! I ordered a rainbow and waited for my order. All the while watching the man hand shave my ice. Now the funny thing is that I asked if I could have ice cream. You know what I mean, right? Ice cream in the shave ice. He pointed me to their ice box that was sparsely full of one box of Melona bars, one box of Drumsticks, and a bunch of other stuff(not ice cream). Uh, I don’t think the guy knew at all what I was talking about when I asked him for ice cream. When I finally got it, my rainbow looked like a hot mess. A blob of green and some other colors, but I won’t hold that against it. It’s shaved ice after all. Can’t judge a book by it’s cover… or can you? I dug into the cover and it was pretty white inside. No dousing of syrup here a la Mr. Jung( ). The hand shaved ice was more like slivers than shavings. I even got small pebbles of ice. So, my shaved ice was more like slivered ice in a light green sauce. I guess I should have just asked for lime, because the green basically tasted like a green river. That would have been alright if I had let it melt down to a slushy, I guess. Not sure what the other flavors were though. A small bowl was $ 2.79 plus tax(coming to $ 2.90-something). This would have probably been a super mini size as many of the more well known shave ice establishments( ), but for the price of a regular. Anyway, as you can see, this obviously isn’t someplace I would recommend you guys stopping at to get a shave ice. Maybe their coffee or hot dogs are better. In the mean time I’ll just put this one on myself. My bad.
