When I think of art galleries, I usually think of rich frou-frou people mingling about discussing Renoir or Versace or something, so I usually try to stay away. I must admit I would have never come here if it weren’t for my art-loving friend(who is in no means frou-frou or rich either… or so she says). Cedar Street Galleries is tucked away in a semi-residential, semi-industrial part of town smack in the middle of Honolulu town. I like to say«town» nowdays because driving to town fills me with trepidation and fear. When I get older I will have to wear Depends for two reasons: 1) fear 2) horrible traffic jams that leave you stuck in the car for over two hours. But before I don my diaper I’ll need to test it out by actually peeing in it to make sure it holds the stated amount, either that, or buy a Wet Okole car seat cover… ANYHOO… I thought my friend was a bit koo koo to drag me into this art gallery for two reasons: 1) I don’t have money to buy art 2) I am afraid of art galleries because they are for snobby art collectors only. Well I was wrong on those two things. Walking into the gallery transports you away from the grungy neighborhood and the meth addicts — its an oasis of, well, art… and some very affordable. I fell in love with a chicken on a fork sculpture and I wanted to buy it, I think it was $ 125 however, I have a kid who will go to college in the near future and will suck the life out of me, so no chicken-fork art-thing. The owner/operator Michael was super-duper friendly. There was a sign that said«Will be Back» hanging on the door but when he saw our pathetic noses pressed up against the glass, he opened the door and welcomed us in and gave us a tour of the gallery and offered up some tasty cookies. His dog was mellow and pleasant and added to the laid-back atmosphere. The art was anything but laid-back…it was awesome! No one should be afraid of art, especially if involves chickens on forks. One day I’ll be able to afford something I really want and when that day comes, I’m going back to Cedar Street, hopefully I won’t be too old by then. I dread having to test out the Depends.

Cedar Street Galleries has been in the business for twenty plus years. Especially when the economy was down recently, and many galleries went out of business, this is saying a lot! Their staff is extremely helpful and knowledge. Many are artists, themselves. The gallery has tons of local art, AND they have art in storage. If you don’t see something on the floor you like just ask! They will find something perfect for your needs.

This quaint, cozy gallery features a variety of artwork from paintings to ceramics to sculpture. Most of the items displayed seem very local in look and feel, and the artists are very talented. The friendly, helpful staff helps you feel right at home here while you’re browsing. Be sure to stop and pet their mascot, a yellow lab mix that hangs out by the front door! :-) The gallery is located a couple of blocks from the Ke’eaumoku Wal-Mart on Cedar Street between Rycroft and Elm Sts., right next to La Gelateria.(Cedar St is a one-way street heading makai.) There is limited parking in their small, shared lot or on the street. Still, I’m usually able to grab a spot in front. They are open Monday through Saturday; hours are Monday, Thursday, Friday: 10AM to 5:30PM and Tuesday, Wednesday, Saturday: 10AM to 4PM. Closed Sunday. For directions or more information, visit .
