To add to Joe E., another way to experience the American Legion in Hollywood is to go to a private party there! A friend rented out the space for her bday party and we had an amazing time. The staff was incredibly friendly and accomodating. Free pool and cheap(er) drinks. I was also told that some people have their Bar Mitzvah’s there! Mazel Tov!

Before I say anything: This is a private club! You can’t just go here. You either have to belong to this outstanding patriotic service organization, or you have to be a guest of a member of this outstanding patriotic service organization. American Legion bars are the perfect solution to the following drinking dilemma: Really hip places are seldom fun, so you go to a dive bar, but then a scrounge or cracked out trannie comes in and sits next to you so you lose either way. What do you do? Become a member and drink at American Legion Posts! Problem solved! At present, the Hollywood Post Bar is only open on Thursdays from 6 to 10PM. It’s a private watering hole and only open to members of the American Legion, Sons of the American Legion, the(ladies) Auxilliary, and their guests. However, it’s not that hard to become a member. I did it. Read on and learn how, or skip to the bottom. I can’t imagine a better place to have a drink. It is the opposite of everything I don’t like about the hip Hollywood spots. It is like a dive without the riff raff. When you find a place like this in L.A., like Tiny’s for example, it never lasts long and soon it is packed with Cahuengans. This place will never be like that. But it WILL last because the American Legion is a successful and legendary patriotic service organization, and Post 43 has been strong since it’s inception in 1919. It was started by guys like Clark Gable in the golden age of Hollywood and the Hall hasn’t’ changed much since it’s dedication in the late 1920s. It is one of the most beautiful buildings in California and you feel honored to be sitting in it having a drink and talking to people. Check the photos on their web site. Mixed drinks are definitely the cheapest in town here, beer is $ 2.00, hot dogs, $ 1.00, pool is free, poker abounds. It’s not just old Civil War vets in here either. It is a great mix of hip young people, vets of the Big One, and in-between Viet Nam aged guys that know what they have in this one of a kind exclusive treasure. Once you are a member of the Legion, or the Sons, or the Ladies auxilliary and you can behave yourself, you can drink here. I recently joined the Sons of the American Legion because my dad fought in the Pacific during WWII and not only can I drink here; I can drink at Legion Halls all over the country. The one in my hometown of Los Alamitos is open 7 days a week! If you want to be a member, go to the web site listed above or below and follow the instructions or contact me and I will walk you through it. Basically, if you are a veteran of a U.S. war, you are in. Or, if you are the son, stepson, or grandson, of a wartime vet, or merchant marine, you are in. Ladies can join the auxiliary. The membership card makes great wallet enhancement and they’re a great service organization. The bars are an awesome bonus privilege, they are all over the country, so join today! The American Legion Wants You! Support our Vets. Here are the sites where both men and women can determine their eligibility. Men(Sons Of The American Legion) Women:(The Auxiliary) Vets can just go to: If you join the«Sons» because of me, let me know. I want to know if I am convincing anybody and I think I get a pin. hahaha.
