I had some mold growing on a vent cover in my house, and when I removed it, the fiberglass lining of the duct was pretty gross. My house is 50 years old and waterfront(humid), so I got some BBB-certified inspectors to my home asap(they also deserve 5 stars: — Doug Eddy was here same day, was very honest and didn’t charge me for his time, and to me his time here and his advice was very valuable). He said that I needed a legit cleaning, and that the ducts could be painted instead of a costly replacement. Having researched this before, I knew there are many companies in this field(duct cleaning) who are NOT legit(many news stories on this), so I was happy to have the guidance from this impartial expert, and he was able to get David Pisan from DUCTZ to my house in less than 20 minutes(DUCTZ had just relocated to this area — near Aventura — from pompano). The process was explained in a 12 page proposal with links to videos and everything — VERY well explained. First all the vents are removed, a massive vacuum is hooked up where your inside A/C unit is(the Handler), and they clean each opening(14 in my case). Then the surfaces are ready for resurfacing, which keeps the insulation of the fiberglass, but adds a smooth coat of antimicrobial paint that makes the ducts more efficient and, more importantly, incapable of re-growth of mold). The techs who did the actual work were punctual, very friendly, patient in answering questions and explaining everything during the job, and left my place cleaner then when they started(the actual process makes a bit of a mess, but they took a lot of time to mask off many areas near each vent). Those who follow my reviews know I’m thrifty Canadian, but the cost of this job(under $ 1400), given the amount of work involved(13 vents plus the handler/plenum) and the final result(I could eat off these ducts now!), was money well spent. Mold is like termites: If you cheap out on treating it, you could really pay for it later — like in medical bills(or serious damage to your house).
