Beauty Bar By Saiko

I found this salon by searching for stylists in Delaware that are certified to do Deva Cuts. I’m really pleased to have met Darlene Regan, and I had a great experience.
I’m always careful to find stylists who specifically say they have experience with curly hair, and I was unable to find anyone in Dover, where I live. My stylist of 8 years no longer does hair, and I just heard about this «Deva Cut» thing, so I made the trip to Hockessin to see what Darlene could do.
Because it was my first visit, I got the «Deva Cut and initial consultation» service. I only waited a minute or two before Darlene was ready for me. We chatted for awhile about my hair, what I’m looking for, what she can do, and she showed me her portfolio, which was a series of before and after photos on her Pinterest page. She took her time, answered all of my questions, and explained what we were going to do for the rest of the appointment.
The Deva Cut is difference because the stylist cuts your hair while it’s dry, in order to see how your curls fall and get the best shape for you. Darlene was great about stopping periodically to show me the progress and get my feedback.
Next, Alyssa washed my hair and applied product. Both Darlene and Alyssa were really communicative with me, helping me see and feel how much conditioner to leave in my hair and how much of each product to use. This was great, because if they hadn’t had me touch my hair as we went along and showed me exactly how much product they used, I wouldn’t have ever known how much care and moisture my hair really need.
Next, I sat under the hair dryer/​diffuser, which looked like a 1960s sci fi mod-​type spaceship, and that was cool. Finally, Darlene finished the style and cut. Because she took before photos of my hair, I was able to see exactly how amazingly different my curls looked with appropriate care and style. I’m really, really happy with what she did with my hair!
The whole process took about 2 hours, and very little of that was wait time. I’m sure it will take less time the next time I go, since I won’t need the consultation. I’m excited to have a stylist that understands curly hair. I was a little guarded about the product upsell, but the truth is that the Deva Cut is associated with Deva Curl products, so there’s a push to buy the products, too. Darlene wasn’t pushy about it at all, which I really appreciated. At the very end, Darlene gave me a brochure about the Deva Curl line of products and handy check list of products that she recommends specifically for me.
I see that this salon is rated as being in the moderate price range. I would say it’s pricey for me; I’ve been getting $ 40 hair cuts for several years. But, because it’s located in Hockessin, and this visit included the consultation, it probably is fair to say that the price is moderate. My 2 hour cut, style, and consultation was $ 65, so you be the judge for yourself.
The cons for me are the commute and the price. However, I only get my hair cut about 3 or 4 times a year, so the price isn’t too big a deal.
My experience was great and I’ll go back.

Great men’s cut!
I’m always pleased to visit Saiko and the staff of the beauty bar. It’s normally just a men’s cut, but Saiko takes the extra time to make sure everything looks great. I’ve even taken my nephews in for a cut, they come out looking like runway models.

The other reviews are sort of sad, since I had a great experience at Beauty Bar. First I want to say how beautiful and clean, it is inside. I love the simple green and white colors and how much light the place has.
I’ve been salon shopping for the last few years. I have been trying to find a stylist who understands curly hair. Most stylists just want to wash, condition, and blow dry/​style; get you in, get you out.
Beauty Bar is not that type of place. I found them through the DevaCurl website under «find a salon» because I was looking for a stylist that knows curly hair. I reached out to Beauty Bar through their facebook. A stylist named Darlene got back to me pretty quickly. She is very knowledgeable about the DevaCurl system and has gone to NYC several times for their classes. I’m sure she has many more credentials than I am listing. She has been a stylist for a couple decades.
I had my first DevaCut with Darlene last week. I had a 15 minute complimentary consultation beforehand. She was super patient. Washed and styled my hair; taught me some things. Also they have these mobile Deva dryers that you sit under; pretty cool.
I think I was there for an hour and 45 minutes total. At the time I didn’t realize that I wanted my hair shorter. This was a different cut than I was used to. But that night I realized I wanted it shorter so I contacted the salon and Darlene was able to fit me in a couple days later. I felt bad for having to come back but I wanted to be happy with my hair. But again, she was patient. So she cut my hair shorter and even washed/​styled it. I am happier with my new summer do and I know I will be coming back.

先日、デラウェア方面へ行くついでに行ってみました。
10分前に到着して、店内へ。受付の女性(Robin)は事務的で無愛想、温かみは感じられず。予約時刻まできっちり待たされる。(10分待った) 担当のSaikoは一度も挨拶に来ず。別のスタイリストがシャンプーをしてくれるとのことで、シャンプー台へ。シャンプーは普通で、可も不可もなくというところか。
シャンプー終了後、濡れた髪のまま、店内の一角で待たされる。近くにあるカウンターに物を置いたが、細かな髪の毛がびっちりついてきたので、慌てて物をどける。20分後、カット台がある場所へ移動する。そこでさらに10分以上待たされる。待たされる時間が長いので、予約をする意味がないように思えた。
店内：全体的に狭くて汚い。ホームページの開放的な画像と全く異なる。
午前中に行ったにもかかわらず、床には髪の毛が飛び散っていて、鏡の前の棚の上にも細­かい髪の毛が散乱していたり、髪の毛がたくさんついたヘアブラシやコームが無造作に置いてあった。窓のサッシや、壁にまで髪の毛がへばり付いていて、日頃からこまめに掃除していないことが一目瞭然。お客の目につく場所が汚れていても平気な神経に疑問を抱く。
今回の目的：ヘアカット。
予約時刻から40分を過ぎて、ようやくカット開始。技術的にはPhiladelphiaのチャイナタウンにある美容室の美容師と同じぐらいのレベルに思えた。個人的には、チャイナタウンに軍配が上がる。(値段も4分の1以下なので) 日本人美容師=熟練した日本の技術、と早とちりした我が身を怨む。
彼女は20代前半でアメリカへ来てるので、日本での美容師経験はほんの数年と思われる。(仮に日本で美容師免許を取得していても、それは30年前の話か？) 施術中は、ヘアドライアーの使い方を間違えているせいか、高温の熱風が直接地肌に当たって、とにかく痛かった。再訪は無いなとこの時点で確信。残念ながら、当方時々垣間見える彼女の人間性が苦手であり、おまけに店内の商品(スタイリング剤やシャンプーなど)を売りつけようと必死で、最初から最後までUncomfortableな滞在だった。
カット代は60ドル。大目に見ても40ドルが妥当ではないか(技術面、ロケーション、その他)。オーナーだから、とチップを遠慮することはないので、行かれる方はキャッシュ(現金)をお忘れなく。支払い時のRobinの対応は相変わらず事務的で、何だかな～と思いつつ店内を後に。サロンで通常味わうリラックスする気分は皆無の経験だった。
こうして、最初で最後の訪問は終了しました。当方には合わなかったというだけであって、Small Businessを助けたい、と思う心の優しい方や、技術うんぬんよりアメリカのサロンを日本語で体験してみたい、という方には向いている場所なのかもしれません。

I have been going to Saiko and Carmen for years. I have never been disappointed. I usually have a double process and a cut. My hair has been through plenty of abuse and it is still very healthy. I don’t do traditional cuts or colors and to find a salon that can give me exactly what I want every time is fantastic. I get stopped a few times a day about my hair and I alway tell them where I go.

Asked for brown and walked out with maroon hair. Ended up spending 300 elsewhere to have it fixed. I never complained initially because she was so proud of herself and pleased that if she couldn’t see the mess she made of my hair I didn’t even want to have her try to fix it. The cut was just ok. Sorry saiko I won’t be back.

This place rocks, I love the work Kathy does with my hair. I’m not originally from this area of the country, and had been disappointed over and over again with cuts, colors, etc from other salons. I thought perhaps I was destined to have crappy hair while I lived here. But not so! Kathy is amazing. She knows what I want before I even say it :-) And the staff at the salon is very friendly too. The only time I would say I was less than satisfied is with a waxing I received, but I would still very highly recommend this salon to anyone looking for amazing treatment :-)
