I was on HSTA Negotiations Committee on Molokai when I was a teacher in town. I visited all of the schools on Molokai each year at least a few times. Every other school on Molokai gives a sense of — we are all on an island so we treat everyone like Ohana. Not the HIGH school. There is only 1 room that I ever felt welcome– the Library, due to the wonderful librarian Otherwise– even the walls in daylight show dismay. It is not a happy place of learning like many of the halls at UHM. Part of the sadness is tragedies that happen on every campus but part is that the place is just not a safe place of learning in general.. Molokai is a wonderful QUIET place to live and raise a family. I would send children to any of the elementary school on Molokai and know that they will be raised well– with the likes of famous singers like Riata Helm or Daryl Labrado and have roots in the islands and wings to soar with the best singers in the world but it is because of the ohana on the island Molokai not the education from the HS. Again, Molokai is the birth place of Hula and the most Hawaiian island and the people are so communal– the high school just does not hold that same level of perfect communality. Molokai is wonderful– the HS is not. Here is an example in my educational opinion where each of the elementary schools could do so much better with having a K-12 in their own buildings and not having a high school.
