This is where we buy the majority of our wine, mostly because the Fruit Center is also where we buy most of our groceries. It’s small but there’s a great selection. They also do tastings on Saturday afternoons and I’ve tried and purchased some amazing wines. I often feel like I’m crashing a private party though because inevitably there’s a crew of about 4 or 5 friends who all know each other, and they know the person conducting the tasting. So, it’s a bit awkward to go up on your own and insert yourself into the tasting. But once you do it, it’s worth it. They use plastic cups for the tasting which I understand, but I don’t like. I’m no snob by any means but I just don’t enjoy drinking wine out of anything other than glass. The staff is very knowledgeable and willing to help with suggestions. And the biggest perk is the smile you’ll get from the beautiful black lab who hangs out behind the register.

I’ve referenced this great little wine shop in my review of the Hingham Fruit Center but it’s a such a gem, I thought it deserved its own review. The Annex in the name refers to the fact that this store is attached to the Fruit Center market but it is in fact a separate business. It’s small, only carries wine and beer but it’s packed to the rafters with some great selections. What helps make it a special stop is not only the nice wine selection but the staff because they know their merchandise and want to help you find the right wine. It seems that they’ve personally tried everything they sell. Last summer I found my thus far, all time favorite vinho verde here. They also have wine tastings every Saturday afternoon. I go to these a lot They’e a good way to try new wines while chatting it up with neighbors and new friends. This is a Hingham middle-of-a-Saturday-afternoon-of-running-errands– place to stop. At the tastings, they always pair the wines with an array of cheeses… I love this! And near Valentine’s day, expect a selection of champagnes and sparkling wines paired with an assortment of chocolates. Dreamy. One of the staff brings her sweet black lab here with her when she works. Any store with a dog hanging out in it is usually top-notch in my book. Sometimes the prices are higher than I’ve seen elsewhere but sometimes they are the same as other stores. But either way, if you buy a case, it’s always 15% off. Yay for wine savings! When I go, I have them start me a box and with their help I fill it with 12 wines, usually a few that I already know and love and then a few that are based on staff suggestions. I like the attention to small details. For example, they always remove the price sticker from every bottle of wine you purchase. Maybe I’m especially persnickety but I hate having a wine bottle at home with the price sticker on it even if the wine is just for me. I like that they take care of this before you’ve even left the store. If you’re buying wine as a gift, they will put it in a pretty cellophane bag with ribbon, gratis. And without breaking a sweat, off you can go to your dinner party. As I’ve said in other reviews, I love places that specialize and don’t try to do everything because they will never do everything well. This place sticks to what it knows; great wines and beers and they do an excellent job of it. My only criticism would be is that I’d like to start seeing some of the organic wines that other markets sell.
