Pretty sketchy looking place. To be fair, plenty of good donut places fit that description. However, those places make up for it with delicious goods. My partner and I tried 4 different pastries: a coconut square, a custard filled donut, a fritter, and cinnamon sugar monkey bread. The first two were average, and the other two were decidedly unpleasant. The fritter tasted a bit stale, and the monkey bread was really strange. It didn’t taste like cinnamon at all, had a huge coating of sugar on the outside, and the bread itself was just a really weird flavor(maybe that is just me not being used to this bread). Also, don’t plan to get coffee here.

Honestly ~ «those pastries tho»! I have to say, I love the shear size, and congealed sweet glazes and icings that grace every little(BIG) piece of donut and cake present at this Hilo namesake! Four stars because I thought the shop could use a little tidying up, and even a modernization, same go’s for some of the desserts and pastries. Other than that though, nice little mom n pop! note: had the bacon donut and Id say I was«living for it» ;)

I really wanted to love this place, especially since I like mom and pops. Nothing really appealed to us but the woman was eagerly awaiting an order so we kind of felt like we had to get something. I asked a question or two about the types of fillings they used and got a bit of snark in return. We stuck with something simple and got a glazed twist and chocolate donut. Neither were outstanding but might be the best option Hilo side.

Located in a strip mall. Very friendly service. Might be the best pineapple square ever made!

Even late in the day there was a good selection. Purchased three coconut items. All so very yummy! Place is a bit worn down and odds and ends like an old tv on the floor for sale.

Nice bake shop. Glazed donut holes are nice and soft. We got it fresh. The plain mini monkey bread is really great. More like a butter roll. The actual butter roll had some type of custard sweetness on the bottom. Not like the usual butter roll I’m use to. The staff was very friendly. Wasn’t there in time for the bacon donut, must have been there too early.

They were out of what we really wanted so we opted for the crème puffs & maple bacon donut. The lady coughed all over our items while boxing them and ringing them up. We asked for different ones. Way too much crème in the puffs. Nothing great at this find.

If your looking to get your face covered in a creamy custard goodness, then you have to try the coconut cream bun! If you don’t like messy foods then I probably wouldn’t get that. There is so much cream on top that it slides around, which is a sign of awesomeness! :) I read other reviews and saw people eating this yummy looking dessert that I just had to come and try it myself! I loved it! Around $ 2 gets you a very large two-person treat! The bun itself is very soft and not too sweet that my mouth hurts, like some desserts. The custard on top is swirled around the whole top of the bun and is about a half inch thick! Shaved coconut is in the custard and really gives the dessert a delicious flavor! The custard is like a dream in my mouth! Mmmm I wish we were staying longer on the Big Island so we could try the other sweets Lanky’s has to offer.

My husband has been talking about your monkey bread for about a month before we arrived. I think he may have a. «Monkey bread“problem, but it is delicious so I can see how the addiction starts. Cinnamon is our favorite flavor. I think my husband will be very sad when go back to the main land and there is no monkey bread!

We were doing our early Saturday morning Farmers market runs and decided to drop in at Lanky’s. The ONLY reason we go there is for the Glazed Fuji Apple Monkey Bread, 5 words, 8 syllables, lol! Being that’s their most popular item, it’s a good thing we went at that particular time because they only had one left. I was kinda iffy about getting it because it was lop-sided and really didn’t appeal to my eyes. But then again I wasn’t wearing my prescription glasses, lol! I ended up buying it because it’s that damn good. They had other types of monkey bread in the display case like the plain and cinnamon varieties. The one I got is around $ 12, so worth it! They have donuts and enough pastries to satisfy anyone’s sweet cravings. Lanky’s Pastries are open from 5 am everyday for your convenience. Make sure to have some«green backs» on hand though they don’t accept credit cards. If you’re ever in the area and happen to end up at Hilo Shopping Center, drop by Lanky’s and get their Fuji Apple Monkey Bread!

I Unilocal’d a place for donuts and found this great place. The donuts and monkey bread were really fresh. I was also surprised to see them sell day old stuff at a discount just like the bakery from when I a small.

Two words: Monkey Bread If you’re ever in Hilo, you need to make a stop at Lanky’s! The monkey bread is so addicting! It probably has boatloads of butter and sugar, but who cares! Once you start eating, you’ll find that it’s hard to stop! This family owned bakery has other delightful desserts such as long johns and cream snails, all of which are delicious, but my heart belongs to the monkey bread.

This little dive bakery gets the full stars from me. CASHONLY be prepared the last thing you want is to have to limit your purchase. Like everyone else has indicated that Monkey Bread is awesome. I chose the glazed, extra butter, extra cinnamon… think of the sound Homer Simpson makes eating a donut … I arrived too late this morning for a bacon donut, but so far everything I’ve sampled has been wonderful.

Lanky’s is a nondescript bakery in a strip mall next to my favorite natural food store. I wandered in there looking for breakfast one day and saw the beautiful tray of maple bacon doughnuts that just came out. I have since been there 3 times and have always been pleased with my purchases. I got the maple bacon doughnut for my boyfriend’s mom and she repeatedly exclaimed that it was the best idea for a doughnut. My boyfriend and I have also shared several of their custard buns in both plain and coconut, and we are constantly amazed by their generous offerings of custard. It’s not the healthiest, but that’s not really what one looks for in a bakery.

Guys, if you’re ever in Hilo, and you have a craving for some pastries treats… you gotta check out Lanky’s at the Hilo Shopping Center. This place has been around for sometime now, and I must say it is a hidden GEM of a store! When I use to do work at the First Hawaiian Bank(Hilo Branch), I somehow just happen to stumble into this place as it is in the same shopping mall. When I bought some of their pastry treats from this place, I was pleasantly surprised at how delicious they were, and became an instant fan! Today, I was working on the Big Island again —(Pahoa Side), and after I was done, I made my way back into Hilo town, just to stop by at Lanky’s Pastries. I was actually jonesing for a custard danish today, as I am a total custard fiend! When I got to the bakery, I did not see any custard danishes, so I went with«Plan B», and got a Custard Chocolate Drizzle Donut, and a Glazed Donut. I’m a guy who likes sweets, and sometimes my eyes are bigger than my stomach! I ended up only eating just a half portion of both donuts, then dumping the rest, as the pastry portions were just so HUGE and GENEROUS!!! I could have used a donut eating partner today! Lol! Let me tell you about the items I bought today… The Glazed Donut was the size of a standard size Styrofoam plate lunch container. All of this for just $ 0.99 cents! Can you believe that??? The Glazed Donut tasted light & very fresh! The donut was glazed just puuuuurfectly! Not too sweet! I tell you… I’d rather eat a Glaze Donut from Lanky’s, than eat a Krispy Crème glaze donut! As for the Custard Chocolate Drizzle Donut — $ 1.49 was also very HUGE! The custard on the donut took care of my custard craving today, but I must say, this donut was very sweet… but of course if you looked at the photo of this donut, you would understand… Lots of parking in the private parking lot of the Hilo Shopping Center. This place only takes hard cold CASH! So please have your«Kala» ready! If this bakery was on Oahu, I’ll tell you, it would give a lot of the other bakeries on Oahu a hard rub! Check ‘em out! No can go wrong!

Shortly after eating loco moco at Café 100, I decided I needed to try a bacon maple donut(a la Voodoo in Portland). Lankys isn’t far away(nothing is in Hilo), so we drive over to check it out. It is located in a strip mall, so it is fun to walk from end to end and just check out all the shops. There is a very nice Natural Foods store here. Lankys is an old school bakery that has been around for a long time. They are known for their monkey bread, which I did not try this time. I was on a mission to eat the bacon maple, which I have seen numerous times on TV at Voodoo. I figured I would give this one a shot. My wife opted for the cococnut glazed donut. First thought was both donuts are pretty big. I ripped mine in half to get a better hold of it and to make it easier to eat(like a bagel). First impression(other than MMM… BACON) was how soft the actual donut was. It was nothing like store bought donuts that are all hard and chalk-like. This was very soft and chewy like a french donut. I thought«damn this is delightful» while I was hit was the super sweet sugary maple glaze. This is the same maple as all other maple– you either love it or loathe it. It’s so sweet that I only need one donut and I’m good for a few months. I can only eat about 3 – 4 maples a year. So to top it all off was the bacon. Oh yes the mighty, greasy, bountiful bacon. These are not bacon bits, but actual slices of bacon chopped up into little bacon dopeness that just blankets the entire top of the donut. Taking a bite of the donut fills your mouth full of happiness and your lap with bacon pieces that have flown off the sides. You will need a napkin or two as bacon can’t become that wonderful without a little grease.

They have three types of chocolate cakes. Go with the Chocolate Dream because it’s considered the«healthiest.» Duh, chocolate cake is not healthy for you regardless. For the smallest round cake they have, it’s priced at $ 17. But it’s soooo worth it! OHEMGEE, don’t forget the longjohn too! It’s like a elongated malasada. This place usually has one worker working and takes cash only. But other than that, this childhood place never gets old!
