I headed to Texas Taters partially out of desperation, being that there are so few restaurants in Hillsboro to choose from, and partially because of the good word of a coworker. Overall the place is a bit strange. Not in a bad way, just in a way that I’m not used to when it comes to restaurants. How to describe it? Hmmm, well it’s a large open room with super tall ceilings, like a soccer arena, with a small counter to the left, sort of like a skating rink snack bar, where the dining area is the skating rink, with small tables and chairs, and no skaters. Make sense? See, strange. That being said, the place appears clean, and the owner(at least I think she was the owner) took my order promptly, and was relatively pleasant. I will say, being that I was the only patron in the place, I can’t understand why a baked potato with cheese and broccoli took 15 minutes to prepare, because I’m sure at a place called«Texas Taters» the baked potatoes are prepared and just waiting to be topped, but I chalk this up in part to the small town pace of life. In Hillsboro it’s pretty common. No one is in a hurry, and this place is no exception. In other words, if you decide to try Texas Taters, be prepared to wait longer than expected for your food. Once I did receive my food, I will say I was pleasantly surprised. The potato was huge, very hot, and the cheese was real, not the processed soupy cheese food used by most eating establishments. The broccoli was fresh as well, and the toppings overall were plentiful. They do put butter on their potatoes before topping them, which I don’t like. Not because it isn’t good, but because I don’t need the calories, especially when the potato is coated with cheese. Next time I’ll ask them to refrain from the butter dousing. I didn’t try anything else, but they have a pretty vast menu. Maybe sometime I will. I won’t say I’ll never return, but because of time limitations and their slower than usual service, I won’t say I will definitely become a repeat customer, either. I have a 30 minute lunch break, and in my opinion, going to a potato joint to get a baker, shouldn’t make me late returning from lunch. If you have time though, and are in the mood for a good spud in the Hillsboro area, this place may just be the one for you.
