(Disclaimer: I have been researching mattresses like a crazy woman for about a month now. And I have even discussed the topic on my blog. At this point in the game, I am only interested in 100% natural latex mattresses for my own purchase.) After being disappointed in other local Portland mattress stores, I was very excited while browsing and coming across two 100% natural talalay latex mattresses 1) The Macadam, and 2) The Pittock. Both state they are made from 100% natural talalay. The Macadam has a rayon/silica fire barrier, and the Pittock has 20 lbs of organic wool as the fire barrier. So obviously we jumped in the car and went over to the local store. And this is where the disappointment begins. I clearly stated to the sales woman(Judy) that I was only interested in 100% natural latex, absolutely no foam. I made that overly clear. The Pittock is not on the showroom floor yet(disappointment) but the Macadam was. I asked her if the Macadam only comes in firm, she stated«yes, if you are interested in something softer, the Overton will be what you want». The Overton was incredibly soft, and the Macadam was very firm. Obviously the Pittock would have filled the gap since online it’s listed as «medium».
Judy then continued to tell me that the Macadam is so firm because they have to use Talatech latex in the mattress, since latex on its own is not firm. She said the only way to have a firm latex mattress is to use coils or talatech latex. Well obviously this is completely nonsense. There are different levels of firm natural latex. If they are using Talatech latex, which is a blend of synthetic and natural, then why are they advertising the Macadam online as 100% natural latex? Frankly, I just feel Judy is clueless about her products. After looking at the mattresses, I asked her«how is this top so squishy?» and she informs me that there is quilted foam in it that holds the fire barrier. She then stated«its the only way to have a rayon fire barrier that doesn’t have formaldehyde.» Didn’t I just ask like 10 minutes prior if there was foam in the mattresses? Uhm, HELLO!!! (And also, it’s just the way their company has decided to build their mattresses. You can use the rayon/silica fire barrier as a sock that covers the mattresses. No quilting foam needed.) Overall, the visit was a complete wash, and I was very disappointed. I do not recommend this company if you are looking for a completely natural 100% latex mattress.

This location is specifically the Clearance Center for Parklane’s high quality, locally manufactured, matresses. Roger was holding down the fort on a dreary day after Christmas and provided the best combination of knowledgable insite, advice, and freedom to linger as long as we wanted. We spent more than an hour curling up on the matresses we were choosing between. He gave us the straight forward lowdown on exact materials(especially important on those Memory Foam mattresses). And I am thrilled to report that I only have 3 more nights of sleeping on our old bed in my future! We got a great deal on a quality, locally made matress set.
