Very hospitable, the cabin was great with everything you need. The amenities on site are great! Would highly recommend this family ran and operated business!

Our family is two adults with four small children. Pine Rest had a cabin available that would fit what our family normally stays in, but they wouldn’t rent it to us due to our party size, even though the children are very young – with no explanation(and was short and unsympathetic). Jan called back to explain that it was out of a courtesy for the guests next door, and that fire code would not let them rent to us.(There is no such fire code). Not family friendly.

Warning! Do not be fooled by the website and reviews. The road noise is just the beginning of our restless multi day stay. The cabin is filthy inside around the edges and the bloody nose tissue inside the Weber grill was an added bonus. If you can take the noise and sit outside(I get sensory overload so was unable to enjoy the view of the highway) bring your own lawn chairs. Just plan on bringing everything other than plates, bowls, electric skillet and utensils. Must bring your own knives or sharpener. Don’t forget coffee filters and a fan is a must if summertime(also helps with the road noise). Hardware Hanks in Hill City has a window fan for $ 50. Everyday we were delivered at least one soured towel to use for showering/dishes(everyone loves to smell like sour milk). Do not forget to bring a laundry basket so you can drive to the laundromat down road. Did I mention the road noise? I know I’m missing some other stuff but we were very disappointed on our first family vacation in 6 years. The location is good but absolutely not worth it at any price.

The main reason we chose the Pine Rest Cabins was the Finnish sauna they have on site. I specifically mentioned this when reserving Cabin 3 for two nights. When we checked in, they asked what time we’d like to take a sauna. We said 8:30pm because we would be sightseeing all day. They agreed they’d have it heated but I received a phone call at about 6pm saying they were closing the office early and the other 2 people were going home. They’d leave wood for us to start the fire ourselves when we returned to the cabin. Well, it takes at least 2 hours to heat a wood-fired sauna which would have been about 10:30−11pm before we could have used it. VERY disappointing. We won’t stay here again. There’s no grass around the cabins, no nice walking paths and it’s right on a busy highway. Not a peaceful setting.

We stayed in #10, not a cabin but a room attached to the house w/private entrance. It was cozy, it was rustic, it was charming, it was clean, it was relaxing. Comfortable bed. The room had a fridge, microwave, barbeque and cooking utensils. No hair dryer. Could qualify for«glamping». If you like 4 star this place is not for you. We stayed 2 nights, saw Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse and rode the train to Keystone on 4th of July. We are from CA, but wish we were close enough to bring the whole family back for the weekend. I assumed there were was no Wi– Fi, but I didn’t ask either.

We recently stayed in Cabin #5 with a girl scout troop. The owners were tremendously helpful. They have been managing the cabins for many years and it shows. Everything went like clockwork. They have a tremendous knowledge of the area and made great recommendations. The Cabin was very clean. Uver the dog was very popular with the girls. The location made it easy to get to various destinations. We really recommend cycling on the Mickelson Trail.

We absolutely loved our vacation at Pine Rest Cabins! The owners, Steve & Jan, were amazing! They gave us some recommendations of things to do, from a local’s perspective. Ex: They informed us of a free dress rehearsal of a Native American performance in the community. They were so helpful, any questions we had, they were right there! The cabin was beautiful, very comfortable, in a very beautiful setting. Their dog, Uver, was the sweetest dog ever, he came to hang out with us. Hill City is a lovely quaint town, close location to Custer State Park. I hope to come back again!

Fantastic cabin resort just outside of Hill City in the Black Hills. It turned out to be a GREAT location to hit all the must-see spots. The owners, Steve & Jan, were gracious enough to stop and get to know us a bit. They shared the in’s & out’s of what to see, when to see it, and how to get to them all… as well as a little history of the hills. The cabin we stayed in was one of their older cabins, but couldn’t see why anyone could ever right a negative review about it. The one absolute must for us is cleanliness; it passed our test with flying colors. If you’re looking for a great spot to stay and have plans to visit everything from Deadwood down to Custer State Park, this is the place for you.

Cozy cabins located on 16⁄385. Only a mile south of Hill City and 9 miles from the south entrance to Harney Peak. 2BR has a small fridge, microwave and sink. Fireplace and space heaters. We used the grills and picnic tables for meals. Friendly and informative owners.

This place rules, and I’ve been staying here off and on since 1994. It’s located about a mile outside of Hill City, near the Mickelson Trail. It has something for everyone. The owners, Jan and Steve, are good, gracious midwesterners who put a special touch in all the cabins. The cabins come in two varieties: old, with history, simple, smallish but full of charm, or the new cabins which are modern, bigger, and trendy in décor. Personally, if you’re into history, love quaintness, then you might like the older, smaller cabins. Some of them are decorated with antiques(antique dressers). One of the larger ones has a real stone fireplace that was built in the last century. As another poster as mentioned, cabin #1 is my favorite. I have stayed there dozens of times over the years, and it is perfect for 1 – 2 people. The walls, ceiling and flooring are antique knotty-pine. How cute is that? The older cabins(over 100 years old, at least the one with the stone fireplace) and grounds were part of a tin mining company during the last part of the 1800’s, that made the town, part of the same operation which built the Alpine Hotel(if memory serves). Chocked full of history and affordably priced, ESPECIALLY if you stay OFF season. Plus you can hike back behind the cabins. Simply awesome!

I give this cabin 5 stars, keeping in mind that this is a cabin in a rural area. The Pine Rest Cabins perfectly captures the spirit of the Black Hills of South Dakota. While visiting Crazy Horse and Mt. Rushmore, I wanted lodging that was different and unique, and this was perfect. I stayed in Cabin 1, so I can’t vouch for the other cabins. Cabin 1 had a wonderful old, loved feel, yet was clean and tidy. It had a large main room with kitchenette, table, futon and VCR/DVD with satellite TV. The cozy bedroom had a comfortable bed with plenty of blankets. The bathroom was very small, yet fulfilled my needs. The property had wifi and an enclosed hot tub, although I did not use either. When I was there(Late May) it got cold at night, but the cabin stayed quite warm. The location is perfect, just south of Hill City, very close to both Crazy Horse and Mt. Rushmore, close to restaurants in Hill City. If you’re visiting Crazy Horse or Mt. Rushmore, don’t go to a sanitized cookie-cutter chain hotel. These cabins complete the experience of being in the Black Hills.

During a week-long trip through South Dakota, my aunt and I stayed at Pine Rest. She tried to downplay the cabin situation, but we had plenty of room. We enjoyed the VCR/DVD player in the kitchen/dining room/living(all one room), but I’d recommend bringing your own viewing selections. There’s no way to please everyone who passes through, but really, has anyone seen and been pleased by the movie Paulie? Anyone? Bueller? The kitchen has most of the utensils you could possibly want. We made most of our meals and did some grilling. The jacuzzi is a nice touch, although I wish the pathway leading to it were less precarious.
