This is a great place to drop in on your trip down 95 or if you are headed to North Carolina. You get a delicious basket of hush puppies on your table as an appetizer and the kids enjoy dipping them in butter. The pork barbecue platter comes in small, medium or large which is just right for similar sized patrons and there are kid platters too. The service was really fast and respectable! Hats off to Skippers!

Not the best I’ve had but overall good. Hush puppies were excellent. Brunswick stew more in keeping with near Virginia style and more like hash than stew. And it was sweet. Not to my liking. Collard greens very good. Slaw was excellent. Fried chicken tender and tasty. Nicely seasoned and golden brown as it should be. Bbq was whole hog and just vinegary enough probably for most, though I prefer a little more«bite» in mine. Actually picked up a hint of sugar in it. My guess is there’s more in the sauce than vinegar and peppers, the classic eastern NC style. Iced tea was good and they have crushed ice — always a plus. Good sized portions at moderate prices. I would stop again if passing close by, though I wouldn’t drive out of my way to get here. NC has too many great BBQ places to choose from for that

I hardly ever sit down and eat here. The to go is fast and good but not much place to stand without getting in the way when they’re busy. If you can, get Taylor to make your order. She’s super fast and doesn’t load your plate down with the juice from vegetables rather than the actual vegetables like some others do. There are a few in there that I can tolerate, but a lot of them need an attitude check. Prices are fairly decent and comparable with the amount of food you get, especially considering the prices of barbecue elsewhere in town.

The bbq was sweet — awful. The collards were a pile of green mush — awful. The Brunswick stew was weak. Green beans had no flavor. Would never go back. was on my way back from Virginia and I should have driven a bit farther and gone to Smithfield’s. Don’t waste your time at this joint

Yum! One word, well 2 actually … Brunswick Stew! It’s so good! Hush puppies are on point and the veggies are great too. This place is a little dated but the food more than makes up for it. You have to have some of their tea too! Prices are fair and the place is clean!

It’s ok. I admit I am ignorant to «Carolina barbecue» and I know that numerous regions handle it differently. As a self-confessed Yankee driving through, we wanted to try something with a local feel. What I like: down-home southern atmosphere and accents. Very prompt and friendly service. Clean. Cheap. Easy to reach from the interstate. The greens were excellent. Sufficient but not gigantic portions. Availability of unsweetened tea on request. What is only mediocre for me: Pulverized meat that mostly tastes like vinegar. Something they call stew which is like a bean chili with pulverized meat that tastes like vinegar. Perhaps this is what Carolina barbecue is all about. If so, I’ll pass on it next time. If this is your understanding of Carolina barbecue and that’s what you want, you will like it.

Best BBQ restaurant ever!!! I’ve been going here since as long as I can remember. Moved away and the first thing I wanted when I was in town was Skippers!

This is definitely country BBQ cooking. It’s a good restaurant for Henderson and one of our go-to places for eating out. It certainly isn’t the BESTBBQ I’ve ever had but we continue to go back and partake, so that’s saying something.

This place is packed with locals. Which is usually a good sign. This is a no frills, home cooking, BBQ joint. The sweet tea was perfect, even had the crushed ice that is so hard to find. I has the BBQ/Brunswick stew combo with Mac and cheese and corn pudding as the sides. The BBQ was good, though it comes with seasonings in it, not just plain meat. The stew was very good and the pudding was excellent, though a bit sweet for me. The service was fine. Nothing special, but they were pretty busy too. The portions are on the small size compared to most of the BBQ places I’ve been too. Still a good value for the money.

A good little bbq joint! The sides were all especially good — we tried the fried okra, corn pudding, and potato salad and enjoyed them immensely. The complimentary hush puppies were also hot, fresh, and delicious. The barbecue itself was good — not the best I’ve ever had, but tasty and got the job done. The prices were a little higher than I was expecting, but the portions were generous so it evens out.

I’ve had better BBQ. I had pulled pork & Brunswick stew. The pork had the consistency as if it’d spent time in a blender. The stew was just«OK.» Not sure I’d look them up next time.

Boy, do I hate leaving a poor review, but I have to say there’s no real reason to come here. I got the medium pulled pork with corn pudding and fried okra. The fried okra was hot and was good. And that’s about all I can say positive. The corn pudding was about room temperature and the pulled pork was tasteless. The vinegar based barbecue sauce was the only option available. Not my favorite but I was willing to give it a shot. That mistake won’t happen again.

Excellent road-food BBQ in the Eastern NC style. I had the pulled pork & stew combo plate. Will visit again when passing through.

The shrimp were good however there were only 6 and they were salad size. I asked for cole slaw and it came in a sample size cup, ridiculously small. I gave my fries away but heard that they were good from the person I gave them to. I would not recommend this place.

Skipper Forsyth’s BBQ located on one of the main roads in Henderson, NC is a typical BBQ joint with concrete cinder block foundation with an open space filled with many locals eating the vittles. There is a nice painting of Skipper Forsyth himself on the wall by the front door. I ordered the BBQ& Brunswick stew combo at a very good price. The pork BBQ was a bit bland and dry like it had been overcooked. The hushpuppies were small and thin like a #2 pencil. The baked beans were good and the green beans may have come from a can. The Brunswick Stew was good. Food C Staff C(waitress was great, cashier was not so great) Décor C(not much décor to speak of) Location C(plenty of good parking around the building) Health Inspection Grade 97.0

Authentic BBQ place near 85. Definitely packed with locals(always a good sign). At the same time veeeery rustic. Don’t bring her here for your first date unless you want to impress her with some good home cooked food.(Luckily enough my wife is that kind of girl). Delicious Baked Beans plus a choice of several other sides; Corn pudding was also a great pick. Menu includes Fried Chicken or different BBQ options. I opted for the chopped bbq with home made bbq sauce. You can pick the size. I decided for a Medium(mainly because my wife, as I said, was there with me; for the Big portion I’ll have to wait to be there again alone). It was definitely enough. Bottom line, 4 stars: we had a great NC bbq experience for little less than $ 20.

Located about a mile off of I-85, and just up the road from rival Nunnery-Freeman, this Henderson icon serves up so fine Eastern NC style chopped pork barbecue, and some pretty fair county cooking, as well. Kind of worn looking on the outside, the interior is bright, clean, and fairly good-sized seating areas — booths on the walls, tables in the middle. I ordered the Barbecue and Stew combo with Slaw and Boiled Potatoes, goes for $ 7.25. The pork is moderately chopped, moist, tender, and with a slightly red hue to it, from the tomato in their sauce, not strictly Eastern, but good — there is little smokiness to the meat. It comes out of the kitchen well sauced, but it is not overdone. The sauce is a nice, vinegar based version, and overall the barbecue is very, very good. There is additional sauce on the table, as well as a commercial hot sauce. The slaw is moist, with some sweet pickle, goes ok with the barbecue, but not a stand alone slaw for my tastes. The Brunswick Stew is not my style either — it is sweet and almost the consistency of a purée, and I’d not order again. The small, new boiled potatoes, almost certainly canned, were simply prepared with butter, salt and pepper, and were excellent. They still had the round shape — not cooked to mush. The hush puppies are small, thin, and delicious — good flavor, not sweet. The Fried Chicken was very good, thinly coated, and fried perfectly. The ¼ plate with 2 sides was $ 5.95. The Fried Okra, the typical previous frozen restaurant variety, was nonetheless, very good. The Mac & Cheese was like Kraft’s, ok but nothing special. They also serve daily special plates, a variety of fried seafood, and sandwiches. The hot dog is the typical Southern chili dog — red wiener, good thick chili, nice bun, and fresh onions — I like their dog. The service is friendly(the waitress leaves a card on your table identifying her by name), and the kitchen is quick. Overall, a very good barbecue joint — worth its reputation.
