Looking for barbecue on I-20 and found this through Unilocal.Food was great. Had the barbecue pork with brunswick stew and turnip greens. Food came out quickly enough. Enjoyed the taste. The sauce was good. A great Southern experience for me.

We drove into Alabama for bbq after a hike. Found Marie’s and decided to try it out. Good stuff: Pulled pork sandwich, okra and baked beans and Texas toast OK: Ribs, Brunswick stew and slaw The ambience was ok with a hometown feel. But not outstanding. Really nice staff. I’d pull in off the road on a trip, but wouldn’t venture to Bama for it again.

Excellent BBQ& very friendly staff. Stopped on our way to Birmingham. We have the pulled pork sandwich plate. Only wish they had Sweet Potato casserole.

Food is horrible. Canned or frozen. Avoid at all costs. I did not expect the food to look like someone had chewed the chicken and spit it back on a plate.

I arrived at the drive through window at 10:20a and even though the sign said they opened at 10 it looked closed. The Open sign was off. I did finally get a person to the window and he seemed confused on how to take an order. 3 different people appeared at the window to help me. The beef(not brisket) sandwich was eatable but not memorable. Onion rings were ok. Been there tried that no reason to return.

Ate here several months ago and it seemed better. The chicken in the chicken plate was chopped into such small pieces it seemed like meal. The sauce was yucky sweet. The slaw was a mayonnaisy mess, maybe from Sysco. The baked potato was ok. I wanted to like it as I had been thinking about eating here the whole day.

Just a heads-up here. We wanted to love Marie’s but it simply was not that great. As Central Alabama barbecue goes, this is fair-to-middlin’. Service wasn’t that great either, actually borderline surly when we were there. I love local businesses, and, like I said, we truly wanted to love it. Maybe it was an off day; every place has ‘em. This is a beautiful area and well worth getting off the interstate to look around. Whether or not you eat at Marie’s, drop by the Tasty Dip in downtown Heflin for a quick dessert; it’s a real throwback to a time gone by.

A great place to stop and eat. They have a wonderful selection and the wait staff is excellent. They will help guide you through the menu but anything you select will be well worth it. The best things about this place is that it is a local business, tastes great, and the prices are reasonable. You cannot go wrong.

Maries was Ok, but just ok. The entire experience was typical… there are hundreds of places just like this all over. So, not bad by any measure… just nothing special either…

Delicious BBQ — I had the pulled pork platter with fried okra and the Brunswick stew as sides. The stew was unique and very tasty. Found Marie’s on Unilocal and was not disappointed. Not to be missed if you are on Rt 20. Only the rarest restaurant get’s five stars from me, so don’t let that mislead — I’ve had food prepared by two iron chefs and they are rec’d four stars as well.

Did a road trip around AL checking out different BBQ places, found Marie’s late in the day, so we split a sandwich to get a sample… it was so good, we had to go back so that we each could have our own sandwich. This is BBQ at it’s best. It had a nice spice to the meat and a great smoke flavor. Nothing overpowering, just perfect. This is now on my list of must go places when in the area.

This place was great! Pork BBQ plate was perfection and either sauce is the way to go. A little oasis off of I-20.

Had to have some Alabama BBQ while here. The Pork plate was very good. The sides were OK but not wonderful. The pork had just the right amount of smoke but could have been more moist. The plates came with a huge piece of TX Toast with some kind of buttery spread all over it. This was not necessary. I would eat here again but I would try something different. Not because what I had was bad but just to try something different. Would go back.

It’s always great to find a quality meal off of the interstate. Marie’s is one of those mark-it-on-the-map(or GPS) places, off of I-20(exit 199) between Atlanta and Birmingham. The pork BBQ is excellent and very smoky, with a nice tangy sauce drizzled on the top of the plate. Fried green tomatoes are cooked slightly dark brown, more like what you’d expect in your aunt’s kitchen than in a restaurant(and I say that as the highest of compliments). Fried okra are obviously fresh and not frozen. Really, the only thing that didn’t seem fresh was the fries, which are your standard crinkle cut. And definitely try the Brunswick stew — it is among the best I’ve ever tasted, sweet and savory. Quick service, great food, friendly folks, great bang for your buck. This sure beats the mess out of eating chain food on the road.

Great BBQ, took it to go. Had the pork sandwich with some slaw. Enjoyed the sweet BBQ sauce as well. If your passing by, It’s right off the 20. Stop in, you won’t regret it. Reasonable prices too.

What a delicious start to a road trip back to California. The attendant at the Alabama welcome center pointed us this way. You wouldn’t find it just driving along the I-20. My husband had the bbq pork sandwich and I had the bbq chicken sandwich. Both were smoky and flavorful on their own but we had to have their bbq sauce on them. Yum! Definitely good! BBQ sauce is a «must-buy»!

A great little place to eat less than 1 mile off of I-20 at the 199 exit. They have really good BBQ, My favorite is the prime rib sandwich with their vinegar based dipping sauce. I would say it is a must try!

Great food for a good price. Try the brunswick stew. And for the health conscious, the smoked/pit chicken is out of this world.

If you are traveling from South Carolina to Mississippi like I was today, you need to wait for food until just across the GA/AL border on I-20 W and pull into Heflin. Take a right at the exit and then head down the street until you see you the glorious sign of Marie’s BBQ House on your left. AND — for all you truckers out there(like me), there is room in the back for trucks. I have to say, this restaurant is the reason why I love the south and their food. I got their BBQ Pork Sandwich and it was so good… I think it was smoked and man was it great. Adding the sauce from the table made it ten times better! Not only was the sandwich great, but the Sweet Tea was amazingly good too. SUPPORTLOCALBUSINESS! FASTFOODISFORSUCKERS!
