If I could give this place 2 ½ stars, I would. My boyfriend rents a spot here, and I really liked it at first, but recently things have gotten worse. A list for your enjoyment: Pros 1. Tenants are fairly quiet inside the building. 2. Maintenance keeps up with things breaking and such. 3. Close proximity to lots of things, including freeway, mall, BART, gang activity(if that’s your thing). 4. The condos themselves are very nice, if a bit dated. 5. HOA is fairly lax, now starting to realize that may be a bad thing. Cons 1. Our car was just stolen here over the weekend. We spoke to both the maintenance guy and a member of the HOA, and their attitude about it was, «shit happens.» A neighbor downstairs said that he’s had two Camaros stolen out of his carport area, which is gated, which people pay $ 400 a month in HOA fees to secure. We think there’s someone in the building scoping out cars to steal, and the management seems unwilling to put up extra precautions. As it stands, there’s about 3 car thefts a month here on average, and I feel like the next step are burglaries in the actual condos. I now feel extremely unsafe staying here, as do a lot of other tenants. I kind of think the whole thing is bullshit, but perhaps I’m still smarting from the theft of a bunch of personal items that were in the trunk of our car. We recovered the vehicle, but my trust in the management is gone. 2. There is a school across the street with high schoolers learning vocational skills. They aren’t horrible, per se, but the school is loud for most weekdays. They have various bells that go off(7:50am, 8am, 11:50am, 12pm, 3:20pm, 3:30pm) and an intercom message twice a day. The street also gets extremely noisy and busy three times a day with buses and student cars. The parking lot directly across from here owned by the school serves as a drug deal/joyriding/firework area. Kinda annoying. 3. There is a church of some kind on the corner next door to the condo building. They take up tons of parking on weekends and are loud sometimes. My boyfriend once heard gunshots here and had to call the cops. 4. There is street cleaning every 1st and 3rd Monday of the month in the morning. If you leave your car there, you will get a $ 75 ticket. And they don’t fuck around. I got one at exactly 7:00:12. Yep, 12 seconds after 7am. To make matters worse, the HOA likes to schedule tree trimming/maintenance/other dumb shit on these days, so you have no choice but to move your car out of the carport area into one of the lots. This is how our car got stolen. 5. This leads me to the most annoying part. This neighborhood is GHETTO. People doing shady shit in front of, next to, across the street from the building. Cars getting stolen, people coming home drunk and loud, fucking with cars in front of the property. Loud noises from the freeway(s) and Hesperian, and people treating Calaroga like a drag strip. The mailboxes here were broken into so many times that they finally moved them into the building, past the second set of doors. I now have a Club, an alarm system, and will be installing a kill switch on my car(that sits in the carport) because I feel like any day now I’ll come outside and my car will be gone. I used to like this place. I thought it was nice and clean and had nice people. The people are still nice, but I can’t deal with the surrounding nasty area and ineffective management. Not worth it in my opinion. There’s a reason why these condos are so cheap! Proceed at your own risk, and try not to own a car that you’re attached to in any way.
