This is mostly just a review for those that live in the area or for travelers who enjoy checking out cemeteries/headstones in cities they’re visiting. Gate of Heaven is one of the best you’ll find as many celebrities who passed away in N.Y., were from N.Y. or otherwise had ties to the NYC suburbs/Westchester County are buried here. The last time I was here was in maybe 2004-05. I made an acquaintance who, due to geographical reasons(he lives/lived in Utah), could not visit this site himself. He is a big N.Y. Yankees fan and asked if I could visit Gate of Heaven and take some pictures for him … and, more specifically, of the headstones for such famous Yankee players as Babe Ruth, Billy Martin and Lou Gehrig. I was able to do so and had an enjoyable time touring the grounds and trying to find the headstones for which I was looking. I’m not sure if the property still does this(though I can’t imagine why it wouldn’t, since so many noteworthy people are buried here), but at the time I visited there was a map of the aforementioned celebrities’ headstones available at the office. You should still be able to get one. This probably isn’t a complete list, though Wikipedia has many notable names listed here: Some highlights: James Cagney, Sal Mineo, Wellington Mara and Bess Houdini(Harry’s wife). Many others listed there I’m unfamiliar with or were way before my time, and I’m sure there are many more that simply aren’t listed at that link but that can be seen if you visit in person. Lou Gehrig’s headstone is very simple and was a pleasure to see in person. He was a great man. His, Martin’s and Ruth’s graves are decorated with Yankee hats and memorabilia, probably most of which have been there for years and have remained untouched unless necessary. I’m no Yankees fan, but visiting here on the day that I did & seeing the headstones of these famous people was a wonderful experience. Some of my family members are interred here or have been cremated and have their ashes placed inside of a family«plot» in a wall niche, so I’ll always have a reason to visit in the future. I understand that hanging out at cemeteries can be kind of creepy and/or weird, but it’s very interesting for those who like to see the headstones of the famous. I’m not one of those people, though I’d definitely be up for at least one more tour of Gate of Heaven’s grounds to see the famous headstones I once saw and to find the others I missed and/or have now forgotten about.
