Jacob Lows is the go to place. I needed a machine screw that true value didn’t carry, it was a long thin one that couldn’t be found in home depot or lowes, but went to jacob lows and one was found in minutes. I highly recommend jacob lows. I’ve been doing business with them for 40 years.

If you live in Havertown and need a hardware store your choices basically come in three tiers. First, you can make the drive to the local Home Depot or Lowes. It will take you a while but you’ll get the big variety. Good luck getting your questions answered. Also it may be a challenge just getting one or two of something. Second, you go over to the True Value in Manoa plaza. This gives you a step down in variety but a step up in expertise and small quantities. Third, you head here. You’ll find lots of expertise. There is a very good chance someone can answer your questions in layman’s terms. Also small quantities are easy here. It’s just a matter of matching your need with the proper establishment. There is a place for all three.

Need 2 cut nails and don’t want to go to Home Depot to purchase 400 of them in plastic you just can’t cut through? Need a single screw and don’t want to spend $ 8.00 on a box? Rehabbing a century old Victorian and have to replace a really old cast iron fitting for the claw footed tub? You need to run, not walk, to Jake Low’s. Nails in bulk so you can buy just what you need. Need that screw, she’ll walk you to the back and direct you to the right box, stacked in almost precise order with hundreds of others and wont give you a nasty look when you pick only one. Need only 2AA batteries instead of 16? Ask any question and decades and decades of experience with contractors, builders, plumbers, electricians, cabinet makers and hapless do it yourselfers have given the owner and her small staff either the know how to give you the correct answer or the confidence to tell you to buy a new one even if you have to go to a competitor to do so. The corporate hardware retail culture that spends much top management time in coming up with ways to force the public to buy much more than they need has passed Jake Low’s by, they’re not upset and we should consider ourselves fortunate to have this amazing place still around.
