Food is good. Bar staff is awesome. They really shouldn’t say that they accept reservations when they don’t. It is only priority seating. Priority seating is also a joke. We waited over 2 hours for a table after making a «reservation» a week in advance. Had they been honest and told us they didn’t take reservations, we never would have chosen this place on a Saturday night. There’s no place to wait and the poor people that get tables near the bar have to deal with people basically standing at their table while they wait forever. You’ll also smell like greasy food when you leave. Definitely will never return on the weekend.

Great food, but their wait area(or lack of) is terrible. No where to stand unless you are staring at someone eating. I think Black Rock makes enough money to update their restaurant to give their paying customers a decent place to wait. Pretty tacky to walk through the front door to check in and people are crammed in at the front door holding drinks.

Black Rock Bar and Grill Hartland MI — 1−20−16. What made the occasion special was being with our grandkids without the rest of our family. Now that they are growing up and becoming a fine young lady and gentleman we find the time to just visit is less and more precious. I read the reviews on this place before we went even though our granddaughter picked it, been there previously and loved it, I found them very mixed and was more than apprehensive. Forget about it. First understand the type of place it is — if you want things prepared for you don’t go here. Second the high point is what is advertised — cook your own meat on a high temp rock. Our meat was good quality and the method allows you to season and enjoy it to your own tastes. Our grandson took the chance and ordered the chicken which was slightly overcooked and without question«kicked up» more than a notch. Only for those who can handle spice. Service was excellent although our server didn’t seem to have tried any of the dishes we asked about she was attentive and made sure we had everything we needed. You also need a little more cash as its a bit on the high side for what you get. Oh did I mention the beer was cold. Jack and Lynn

Food was great. But I don’t know why they say they take reservations when the wait is still an hour after you arrive.

This place is way over hyped. The appetizers were average. My steak was of average quality. I personally didn’t care to cook my own steak. I found myself getting sidetracked in conversation and losing track of my steak to find I overcooked it. The sides were not good. I had rice that was crunchy and dry like it had been reheated and sitting under a heat lamp. The asparagus was soggy and overcooked. There was nothing fresh about the sides and they borderline grossed me out. Not a good value for the price. On a positive note, our server was great.

I ordered the NY Strip w/asparagus and baked potato. The food was good, not spectacular. The wait for a table was over an hour, I would suggest trying to make reservations as we walked in at 5:30p on Saturday night. It was insanely crowded in the waiting area. Our server was great and personable. The price is on the high side. The place is also very smoky, as many people opt to cook their steak at their table, so if the smoky atmosphere is an issue, I would think again

I just think if you’re going to cook your own food they shouldn’t charge so much

Food is amazing. But make sure you are wearing clothes that are easy to wash. You will stink once you step in. You need to change and take shower immediately. But the food is really good.

Delicious food! A bit of a wait, a little pricey and a little loud during the dinner hours. But its a good time and worth trying.

The food is good but overpriced. If you have a special event ie homecoming anniversary do NOT go in the evening. The call ahead priority seating is a joke they tell you about a 30 minute wait but actual time is 90 to 120 minutes same as walk ins. Why even bother Very disappointing

My husband and I went there earlier today for our anniversary. Cooking steaks on the rock was fun, kept it all nice and hot while we ate it, but we probably wouldn’t do that again. The meat was very good, sides were also quite good. Service was a little hit and miss. Server seemed irritated one minute and then friendly the next. She brought our dessert — ice cream brownie — but then we had to wait for spoons and plates. Then she was mad when we asked someone else to get them for us after we waited and waited. Overall, we enjoyed the experience, but I’m not sure we’d visit again. The prices reflect a steak house yet it was very, very casual, and we were surprised at the number(and age) of children in there.

Took my lovely wife here for her birthday last weekend… She loved the experience of cooking her own steak and also liked the fact that her steak stayed warm during the entire meal as she was able to cook her steak a bit at a time and eat as she went along… I on the other hand do not share a passion for any meal at a restaurant that I have to make myself. I mean like fajitas… I do NOT want to put those things together… I can do that at home. Steak I can cook over the flames on my grill. I had skillet lasagna and it was good but not amazing. The tallness of the pasta prevented it from being served HOT regardless of the stone heat… Dessert was awesome and service was very good. We will return for some other special occasion especially now that they are building one much closer to us in Davison.

I go here all the time and it’s my favorite restaurant. My husband and myself go for all of our special occasions but this past time we went with 6 of our friends and our waiter was awful!!! We would ask him for something and he would never return we kept asking someone else. Then I got a 100.00 gift certificate and after paying it had 28.00 left on it and he didn’t give it to me after he brought back everyone’s credit cards and change I had to ask for it and he goes oh OK here and walked away all mad. Why would I leave him a 28.00 tip when I gave him 10.00 cash with the gift card and everyone else left him a tip as well? All my other experiences have been great tho. The mac n cheese burger is awesome, the crab cake sandwich is awesome, the soups are amazing and the steaks are perfect!

I have been here many times, and the food is awesome. That being said, the atmosphere is not. The place is very loud and God forbid you want a table for two. There are a number of tables that you can be put in that are crowded in with other tables, offering no privacy at all. It is so crowded that your neighbors are gawking at your food, the servers have to apologize for putting their butt in your face when they tend to the other tables nearby, and the tables are too small for 2 entrees, drinks and condiments. The back room at Hartland is the place to be. Quiet and private.

I am sitting here now, so this is fresh on my mind. If you have not eaten here or have no idea what it’s about, let me tell you because no one told me. The food comes on a hot as F#@K black Rock. You cook it yourself so you can’t complain about the temperature. Don’t touch the Rock… you’re welcome! I ordered scallops and feel so full I can’t breath. The food is awesome. I personally LOVED the chef :) Here is the bad from me. Since raw meat can’t touch any other food, I had 4 little plates and no room. Our waitress didn’t educate me on the Rock. I know«common sense» should be key here but… still. Lastly there were flies in the restaurant. Not one… but several. Seems nit picky, but when you are charging 25 $ for 5 scallops I don’t want to swat flies.

I will need to return here to update this review. When I stopped by I was interested in the heavily hyped concept of cooking a steak at your table setting. The meat quality was good and the service was also good. Unfortunately many of the salad components were«not available» at the time requiring some substitutions. It may be a fun concept for some to cook a steak on a granite slab right in front of you, but remember you will smell like steak grease and grill smoke from this experience. Next time I will have the cook prepare my steak in the kitchen. Interesting gimmick but not for me anyway.

Went here on a Monday night because a group of friends wanted to go. I expected terrible service, overpriced menu and poor quality based on the reviews I read. Our server was a solid B, good not great. I ordered the Signature Steak. I got to cook it to my liking, and it was one of the best steaks I’ve had. It was $ 17.99 for a 10 oz. steak with two sides — which is a price I would expect from a steakhouse. If you don’t want the experience of cooking your own steak, don’t come here. If that sounds like a fun thing(which it was and was not nearly as difficult as some reviewers stated) then give this place a try. I will return based on the experience and quality of food.

I want to give this restaurant 5 stars but the lack of beer descriptions in the menu and the fact that they don’t let you taste before you buy, forces me to lower the rating to 4. It’s also very, very loud when they are busy like tonight. Issues aside –Man! What a great meal! The food was phenomenal! I had the 10 ounce sirloin and my husband had a chicken dish that was outstanding! The winner of the night was the lobster bisque and the gigantic lobster claw that came with it! Definitely worth the trip and the wait! If we lived here, we would definitely be back!

Food was delicious. Between the two of us, we ordered filet, scallops, and salmon. The filet was one of the best steaks we have ever had. It was juicy and buttery and we were able to cook it to our desired done-ness on the stone. The scallops were also cooked on the stone and they were the best scallops we have ever had; perfectly fresh. The salmon was cooked in the kitchen and was good, slightly overcooked, but still quite tasty. I knocked off a star for service and atmosphere. I think the ventilation could use a bit of work as it is super smoky from all of the stones cooking. I also think it may have been the room we were sat in. Overall, we really enjoyed the restaurant and will return.

I have dined at this location multiple times and have been continuously impressed with each experience. I have had great servers that were very knowledgeable about the menu and it’s contents. My favorite experience included a Father’s Day celebration with my family. We shared the calamari and cheesy lobster dip which were both delicious. I am obsessed with the sauce that the calamari is topped with. I personally ordered the sirloin w/the delicious rock sauce and was definitely impressed. The idea of cooking your own steak to your liking is fun and a great way to get the table interacting. We shared the volcano dessert and loved the way the sparkler was lit. I personally find it great for a special occasion. We will definitely be back!
